A Tale of Two Races
Del Webb Oaks Stakes
Grade I
A mile and one eighth on Firm Turf
$350,000
Fillies and mares, 3 years old
It was a Tale of Two Races here at the Grade I Del Webb Oaks in California this weekend. TENACIOUS V ran nearly a perfect race from the “way back” and BAD SCENE got so far out front that it appeared that no one could possibly catch her.
In the end, it was number one ranked TENACIOUS V who came from over 11 lengths back to win rather easily. That makes two wins in a row and over $1.5 million in earnings for the Peeps4 chestnut filly. She tied her fastest race which was the previous win with a sizzling 106 SPF and now has four Graded wins including three G1s. She also has two seconds in G1s, both by less than a quarter length.
BAD SCENE took the other route and jumped out to the early lead and was never really challenged as she built up a lead of over seven lengths coming into the final turn. It appeared that she was in a different class than the other fillies. In the end, there were only two in the class and it included our winner. SUNSHAFT finished third but was nearly nine lengths back. The rest of the field was in double figures behind TENACIOUS V who looked like a rocket in the final quarter. BAD SCENE ran a personal best 103 SPF but it wasn’t near enough in this race.
Peeps4 has quite a special horse in the stable and will have to pick and choose the way to possible horse of the year honors with this beautiful filly. I for one will be watching and admiring the chestnut rocket as she finishes up her three year old campaign.
Good luck to all runners!
