We are in sunny California for the Del Webb Oaks and we have some wonderful fillies entered with eight of the top 58 ranked turf fillies. The weather man echos the Beach Boys by saying “It never rains in California” and we should have a lightning fast track. We have a couple of ladies that are ready to make a statement so let’s take a look:

(A.P. INDY x SADLER’S WELLS x BUCKPASSER) This filly with the big pedigree just missed a triple digit SPF in her last outing when she won the GII Pioneer Boulevard Cup. She has looker her best at this distance though trainer LouBrown has moved her around a bit She likes to stalk the leaders so this inside post will be to her liking. Jockey Pimental is struggling this year but could be in for a turnaround riding here.

(MINESHAFT x KRIS S. x STORM CAT) This pretty filly out of broodmare Sun Grazer has had a strong year with four Graded wins and is looking to move over the $1 million mark in earnings. Trainer MrBigB feels he has found this fillies perfect distance and this should be it. Jockey Bonus has been looking good and this trio should finish somewhere on the board.

(PLEASANTLY PERFECT x MISWAKI x SWORD DANCE(IRE)) How about four in a row coming in and five out of her last six? That sure ought to scare somebody! And two of those were Graded Stakes. This Chestnut filly out of Bad Habit is making her Momma proud with half of her races ending in wins and nearing half a million dollars in earnings. Lenny6 is proud to death of this girl and with Staples in the irons, with his success this year, they could be tough to beat. This is the place for a real break out race from this young lady.

(STROLL x RAINBOW QUEST x CAERLEON) A veteran of these big races, but she has only three wins to her credit in 13 tries and only one win in her past eleven races. OnTarget2 has tried a bit of everything but she hasn’t really been back on form since before last years Breeders Bowl. Griffen is holding the reins and has been somewhat disappointing as well this season. It would be nice for all involved to see her pop a big one here but there is some really tough company.

(SEEKING A HOME x EVENT OF THE YEAR x POLICEMAN(FR)) This will be the first Graded outing since the Equinics GI earlier this year when she finished a respectable fifth. Since then, she has been featured by trainer AJR13 in a variety of Stakes races with only one win and one place to show for it. A bit of a stretch to move up in class here but she did show well in that earlier race. Donahue is in the saddle and has a way with these young ladies. Perhaps he can work some of his magic here.

(VINDICATION x LEAR FAN x BUCKPASSER) After what looks to be a one race layoff, this big chestnut filly came back with a V for vengeance in a Tenacious way with a 106 SPF in the Smackdown II Stakes last time out, running away with it at the end. This lady is number one ranked and with good reason as she has finished either first or second in 7 of 10 since turning to the grass last year. Most of those were Graded races and she had two Grade I wins during that stretch. Peeps4 knows what this lady likes and does a great job with it. One of the track’s best jockeys in Gossett is up and feels that this should be a winning ride.

(WAR CHANT x ALYDAR x SEATTLE SLEW) A nice young racing career here but only one Graded outing which was a disaster. Trainer Kobras2 would like to make up for that here and has Simcox holding the reins and that is a good sign of things to come. The pair doesn’t need to bump the SPF too much to get in that rarified air of Graded winners but this party is well attended and the challenge could be tough here.

A bit of a surprise here with this entry as this youngster has never run faster than an 85 SPF and has only one win that wasn’t a claimer or maiden. It would have to be a surprise to see her contend here as well although things like that have been known to happen. Trainer Hoofers has to feel good about this filly to put her in this company.

(PINE BLUFF x JAVA GOLD x RISEN STAR) Now here is an interesting filly. She has run triple figure SPFs in two of her recent races and just missed winning her last GI by a whisker. Trainer FlickasPad has done a masterful job of keeping her consistency up this year. She does seem to prefer the mile a bit over this distance but should figure prominently in the outcome of the race. Mecklenberg will need all of his 6 plus years of experience to guide this filly past the higher rated horses but just might be able to do the trick.

This chestnut filly has won two of three since switching form dirt to grass but this is a big jump up in class from those allowance races. It was a big step to move from the clay as trainer DixieDotCo watched her win four of five before the move but couldn’t pull the string in her only Stakes race. Jones has been having a good season in the saddle in guiding home winners but this could be a tough spot especially from the outside as she likes to stay on or near the lead.

It’s hard to argue with eight of twelve races on the board and nearly half a million in earnings but this filly has been giving owner Simsters1 fits this year with a roller coaster season. She has only one win and that was in an allowance last time out with a pedestrian 80 SPF on an off track. She has definitely under achieving this year and jockey Evans has been doing much the same. All in all, I see no reason that Simsters1 will not continue to be pulling his hair out after this race.

A fairly even race with some really nice looking fillies, I like SUN TURNS TO MOON to finish fifth. I think that BAD SCENE will just miss the board in fourth place. I am really torn between SUNSHAFT and NOT A HONKY TONK but I think that NOT A HONKY TONK will hold on for second by a neck. The young lady that is ready to further her bright star is TENACIOUS V . She’s on her game and I don’t see anyone beating her.
