Breeders Bowl Game Gr III

Breeders Bowl Game Grade III

One mile
Firm Turf
$175,000
Fillies and mares, 3 years old and up

Here we are at New York eagerly anticipating the clash of Nations top 3 year old colts in todays feature race – The New Yorker. However, the wait will be anything but boring with the big race being preceeded with 2 other Grade I races and of course the Grade III Breeders Bowl Game for Fillies and Mares of 3 years and up. The crowd is milling around waiting for the 11 ladies of the turf course to make their appearance in the parade ring. The early morning pre-post betting gave 9 of the runners a good chance of winning so the difficulty here is trying to narrow that down somewhat to the best 2 or 3 chances.

PRE-POST MORNING MARKET:

  • 4/1 TOMMY
  • 9/2 BACK IN YOUR ARMS
  • 5/1 TRY TRY AGAIN TOO
  • 6/1 GOLD FOREST
  • 8/1 CATONAHOTTINROOF, ROYAL TIARA
  • 9/1 SLY GO LIGHTLY, K’S PANACHE
  • 11/1 SMACKDOWN
  • 18/1 A. P. ANDY
  • 27/1 WINZIG

No. 1  A.P. ANDY
(A.P. INDY x UNBRIDLED x RAHY)
Owned Trained and Bred by Andycapper

One of the 2 runners not fancied in today’s pre-post market. With all her 2006 starts being over longer distances than todays and with only limited success, it is difficult to see her having much of an impact on today’s race. Her best recent effort being 2 starts back over 11 furlongs with a nose win in an Un-graded Stakes in a moderate time.

No. 2 CATONAHOTTINROOF
(STORM CAT x GULCH x SEXTON BLAKE(IRE))
Owned Trained and Bred by Jlm

Another whose recent starts have been over distances longer than today’s mile, although against much stronger Graded Company. Although she has 9 career wins from 32 starts it has been quite some time since she has collected the major share of any prize money on offer. After a drop in form her last start was a significant improvement speedwise, but it is doubtful if over this shorter distance she can do better than a midfield finish.

No. 3 BACK IN YOUR ARMS
(KINGMAMBO x NIJINSKY II x ROBERTO)
Owned Trained and Bred by Iant4

Comes into today’s race as the highest divisional ranked runner at 6th, and quick glance at her form shows why. With 13 wins from 28 starts including multiple Graded Stakes successes over a mile. Her last start win in France certainly puts her in good stead here today. Trainer Iant4 has given her a 4 week let up to recover after shipping back across the Atlantic and with top hoop A. Rolling aboard she has earned her place as 2nd favorite today.

No. 4 WINZIG (IRE)
(HAWK WING (IRE) x DANZIG x PRIVATE ACCOUNT)
Owned and Trained by Outinfront  Bred by Botanybay

Rank outsider of today’s 11 horse field, 5 starts back she was still competing in claiming races, which is where her new owner picked her up for a paltry $10,000. Coming off a win in that claimer in her last start as a 3yo she backed up with speed boost in her 1st 4yo start with a nice allowance win. With the exuberance of any new owner Outinfront decided to see how his new addition to his stable would fare against Stakes horses. Unfortunately she hasn’t really stepped up and this further jump in class may be just a little ambitious.

No. 5 TRY TRY AGAIN TOO
(SEEKING THE GOLD x SEATTLE SLEW x WOODMAN)
Owned Trained and Bred by Pauldmd

Very lightly raced 5yo mare with only 13 starts on her record, but with a better than 50% strike rate (7 wins) shevcertainly comes into contention here. After starting her race career as a 2yo with a debut win on dirt, she managed very little else until trainer Pauldmd decided to switch her over to the grass. What followed was an amazing transformation as she galloped through her allowance classes with 5 wins and a 2nd from 6 starts in a short 3yo career and early into her 4th year. Pauldmd then moved her up to see how she would handle Stakes opposition which she did with flair – 2 starts for a 2nd and a last start win. However that was about 9 months ago, so the question is can she reproduce that form today after such a long layoff?

No. 6 SMACKDOWN (IRE)
(ROCK OF GIBRALTAR (IRE) x PEINTRE CELEBRE (IRE) x THE MINSTREL)
Owned Trained and Bred by Peeps5

After flirting with the idea Smackdown could be a sprinter, with a distinct lack of success, trainer Peeps5 switched her back to a mile. This brought about in instant change of attitude as she has quickly improved to a 2nd then a win in Stakes company. Stepping up again last start to take on Graded horses she finished a credible 2nd to Back In Your Arms in France. However she will need to keep on improving if she wants to turn the tables today.

No. 7 SLY GO LIGHTLY (IRE)
(SLIGO BAY (IRE) x PINE BLUFF x BARKERVILLE)
Owned Trained and Bred by Oberon

Another whose last start was in France, and although 3rd to Back In Your Arms and Smackdown, she was soundly beaten by 7 lengths. However, her start prior to that was an impressive win in a listed Stakes also over the mile trip. Winner of 50% of her 24 starts she cannot be completely discarded here especially if she can repeat that run of 2 starts back.

No. 8 K’S PANACHE
(FUSAICHI PEGASUS x MILL REEF x NUREYEV)
Owned Trained and Bred by Kuovadis

Trainer Kuovadis has had this lil lady mixing her distances of recent times with just moderate success against allowance and listed Stakes company. That is until her last stunning run where she headed downunder for the Grade I Adelaide Mile, surprising a few noted equine “experts” by racing away with the lion’s share of the prize. If she can back that win up here with similar form she will prove very difficult to beat.

No. 9 ROYAL TIARA
(CRYPTOCLEARANCE x DANEHILL x RIVERMAN)
Owned Trained and Bred by Crown

Showed an improvement in form for a couple of months before last start slipping back a little. She will definitely need to improve on that run to be competitive today. Her past 3 runs at this level have been far from impressive and she may just be one of those horses that just cannot quite step up to Graded class. But there is only 1 way to find out and that is to give her another chance, which is exactly what she gets today.

No. 10 GOLD FOREST
(TOUCH GOLD x FOREST WILDCAT x SILVER GHOST)
Owned and Trained by Ladysierra  Bred by Jslorde

Very consistant gal who loves to lead, but of recent times finds it difficult to hold on until the wire irrespective of the distance. Seems that her best form comes in patches andvshe likes working up to her best times. The trend of her past 3 runs says it may be today that she will put her best 4 feet forward. Five starts back she led until the final furlong over this distance in the Grade I Sexy Muffins Classic before tiring to a credible 4th. One to watch if she can get an easy run up front.

No. 11 TOMMY
(DANZIG x NIJINSKY II x NUREYEV)
Owned Trained and Bred by Artistway

Goes to the gate today as the morning line favorite on the back of 5 straight runs with 100+ speed ratings, with the last 4 being at this class or higher. With 3 wins and 2 minor placings in those 5 runs she certainly is a deserved favorite. With a Grade II win over 9 furlongs and a 2nd in the Equinics included it would be a very brave person to leave her out of calculations for today’s race. Drawing the outside gate may be the only drawback she faces today.

Well that covers the field as they make their way from the parade ring towards the gate, thevcrowd moves towards the fence to get a better view of the final 2 furlongs, or up into their reserved seats in the stands. More than a few are still trying to get their final wagers down at the betting windows.

Hopefully the tickets I just tucked into my back pocket will be worth something in about 3 minutes time.

Where have I placed my money? Well if No. 5 Try Try Again Too can overcome the long lay off I believe she represents the value bet of the race and I have taken a $100 across the board bet on her. For a couple of savers I placed a multiple all way exacta for $10 boxing the 2, 5 and 11 horses as well as a multiple $4 trifecta of 2,5,11/2,5,11/Field.

Total outlay – $576.00

  • No. 5 $100 across the board ($300.00)
  • Boxed $10 Exacta 2, 5 and 11 ($60.00)
  • Multiple $4 Trifecta 2,5,11/2,5,11/Field ($216.00)
