Whose the next Salfly’s Wells?

The STEVE RIDGE Memorial
Stakes
A mile and five eighths
Firm Turf
$60,000
All horses, 4 years old and up

The 2nd running of the Steve Ridge Memorial will take place at the Northern California track.  Last year as you might recall this race was won the former Arc de Triumph (G1) winner Salfly’s Wells, this horse retired shortly after the race and has already bred stakes winner Salfly’s Stormer.  Do we have another historically graded A horse in our mist today, time will tell.  The morning line does not have a clear cut favorite with so many good horses in this field of eleven.

Mighty Hawk (War Chant X Seattle Slew) is on a hot streak winning three of its last four stakes races over 10 furlongs.  This 4YO has won five of its seven races on the turf and finish second in another.  It has the highest average speed rating of the field and likes to sit in the middle of the pack before taking over the leaders.  At 6-1, it could be a steal on Saturday.

The Gourmet has won fourteen of its 36 starts and won two races back with an impressive 98 speed rating.  O/T Quicksand found this horse in the $2500 claimer bind and has won seven stakes races since.  That reminds me to check those low level claimers for gold.  This co-favorite should definitely be in the top three of today’s race

Scotch Whiskey has won seven of its 26 races so far.  This 4YO has already won two stakes race this year and will be looking to pull off an upset today.  The first three horses should be right in together as this race unfolds

Dan Colony is a nine time winner of stakes races and finished third in the Grade I San Francisco Capitan Handicap six weeks ago posting an impressive 101 speed rating.  This is a deadly co-favorite that, if fresh, could take over the lead in the stretch and never look back.

Coominya Duds is coming off an impressive stakes victory three weeks ago in the Mammoth Project Handicap.  This front runner could find itself all alone on the lead and has won this longer races by wiring the field.

Infinite Wisdom is being asked to being asked to a 1/2 mile further than its longest allowance victory.  This 4YO colt will join Dan Colony at the back of the back waiting to make its move.  It does seem to like the longer distance after almost winning a 12 furlong stakes race a month ago.

Wingfly’s Dancer doesn’t seem to have the speed numbers lately for this eight time stakes winner to be in contention Saturday.  This horse will be right up front with Coominya Duds trying to putting pressure on the front runner.  If this horse is sharp the possibility of reverting back to its high 90s, low 100s speed ratings is there.  This 4YO colt has finished 1-2-3 in 19 of its 21 races.

Krypie Connection, 6YO, has won eleven of its 58 races and finishing second or third 24 times.  It will be one of the front runners in this race, except it will be joined by a couple of younger horses who also will attempt to set the pace.  It did win its last race with a 93 rating, but checking the history it bounced badly in its next race.

Carnaroe Reservoir, Vin Da Bona and Bob the Cob are three long shots in this race whose speed figures don’t figure to be in the race.  All three have very good breeding and the first two should be ready for stakes competition real soon.  Bob the Cob, which is on a win streak of three races, won a stakes race three back and has six stakes wins plus a Grade II victory for this 7YO.

At the Wire:  Mighty Hawk should win this race by just the numbers its posted lately.  Three other horses that are in contention are The Gourmet, Dan Colony and Wingfly’s Dancer.  Some of these horses in today’s race are almost ready to step up and be competitive in the Graded Stakes races, and I can’t wait to make some money off of them.

            Prediction: 1 – 10 – 6 – 2
