Winner Has Leggs to Spare
Worldfly’s Wells paid $13.00 to win Saturday’s St. Leggs Marathon in Victoria. As many predicted, dawnrun’s five-year-old went straight to the lead and stayed there for all of the fourteen furlongs. Celtic Legend (FR) pressed the pace early, staying with Worldfly’s Wells throughout the early stages of the race and not allowing him to run away with it entirely. Turning down the stretch, however, saw the favorite fading, though jockey M. Miller did everything possible to keep Celtic Legend (FR) up front. Despite his best efforts, Wordlfy’s Wells powered on to what was at one point a seven length lead.
In the final furlong a tremendous cheer broke out from the crowd as a pair of fillies, Mockingbird and Impulsion, made late runs. Impulsion has found new success recently on turf and finished in third. Mockingbird, although shipped in from the states, had become a crowd favorite over the past week and made many of her new fans happy by coming home second and cutting Worldfly’s Wells’ lead to four and a quarter lengths. Pedro’s Speedster finished fourth, while Celtic Legend(FR) held on for fifth.
Whether or not you believe the legend of St. Leggs, for whom this race was named, there is no denying that Worldfly’s Wells made this one look easy. While a few in the crowd proclaimed him an equal to Leggs, most were content to celebrate this victory and leave legends to another era.
It should be noted that all who participated in this race were presented with commemorative leg wraps afterward that bear a picture of Leggs himself.
