Classic finish to 1000 Guineas
Well it looked like a cracking race on paper, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. There was a classic looking field of fillies assembled and they raced in a classic style, with a breathtaking finish from Tenacious V finally taking the spoils. Whilst your correspondent freely admits that he shouted himself hoarse for peeps4’s brilliant filly to get up on the line, it’s impossible not to feel for jsimpson whose ultra game front runner, Chop never stops, came so close to holding on for a pillar to post victory. Her jockey I Weinman jumped her out of stall 4 and quickly took control of the rails position to dictate the pace of the race. Gradually winding it up, he must have thought he had it in the bag as the pair managed to put over three lengths between themselves and the field coming off the home turn. There was never any question of them stopping and it needed a deep belief in the closing powers of the rest of the field to see any outcome other than a victory for the brave little filly who kept on sticking her neck out.
Then it happened.
A Craig started to weave through horses at the back of the field, his filly was absolutely flying and made the others look like statues. All except the leader who just kept on going and was surely going to make the seven lengths she still had in hand of the big closer count. Peyragudes had finally seen off the rest of the pack and was running on well in second without really making an impression on the leader and it looked like the only danger was Tenacious V who was now pulled to the outside of the pack for a clear run. The stewards later reported that they couldn’t find any evidence of a jet pack, but it seems to defy logic that there wasn’t one when the speed with which the filly ran past the field and eventually got her head in front by ¼ length at the post is taken into account. One of the great finishes to a race steeped in history, this filly certainly packs a punch.
Peyragudes held on for third from the strong finishing (compared to normal horses) Malindi, with Cannot comply fifth.
All in all, a jaw dropping performance from the winner and a great race all round.
