GLOBAL GROUP 1 RACING
GLOBAL GROUP 1 RACING
Today I will start the Global Group 1 Racing series. Over the coming weeks we will take a look at the G1 races contested around the world, we will see the conditions of each race and have a look at the tracks. Being an Aussie I have decided to start with Australia and New Zealand. I hope our community finds this interesting and informative.

Very interesting, So many varieties of shapes and sizes as opposed to the “cookie cutter” North American tracks.
Great stuff! Looking forward to more.
Yes – super start to what will be an interesting and informative series.
Thanks, Greg, for an eye opening look (for this American) at racing ’round the world. Though I don’t understand how you can race horses at all those baseball stadiums. 😉
That’s exactly what I was thinking, ric. Overseas tracks versus American tracks are, well, sort of like the difference between football stadiums and baseball stadiums here.
Here in America, I think, we look at a track, and instead of looking to see how different the tracks are, we judge them more by how different their grandstands are instead, when we talk about their differences…unless you’re a real life horse person. Then you probably get into things like, how hard or cushiony the track is…or how long the blades of grass are on the a turf course (which can make a huge difference for a horse….or how sharp the turns are, perhaps.
Wait until Greg gets to South Africa. There are some extremely interesting courses there. I was looking at them a few months back, when we were playing S. African races. So much more strategy is involved, really. The courses make a big difference to some horses.
It would be fun if you could show not just the aerial views, but also some shots of head on views at various tracks. I think you know where I’m going with this. You know what’s so much fun about watching UK racing, which has much more pronounced “hills” and “valleys” in its courses, compared to most of the rest of the world? It’s when you’re watching a head on view of a race there, and you can hear the horses coming down the course….but you can’t see them. Then suddenly they pop up out of nowhere…from a deep valley…onto the crest of a hill in the course. That has always taken my breath away, when I’ve seen that. It’s so astounding…and startling.
Very thought-provoking, as usual, Greg.
I know this is supposed to be about the races, but it’s interesting to see the tracks and their shapes, as well. It’s something you’re very accustomed to there in Australia, but you’ve stumbled upon something we find extremely fascinating here.
Well done.
