Spotlight Race of the Day: 7/23 Japan Claiming

A firm turf surface is awaiting a field of fillies & mares who will be running a distance of a mile and a half.   It’s a claiming event with a price tag of $17,500. and gals age 3 and up are eligible.  Eight runners have entered the event:

1.  Flying Chant   4/1

Last trip to the winner’s circle was March, 2013 so it’s been a long time for this gal.  She’s showing signs of life in last two races, going 10f and 10.5f where she finished 2nd and third with a little late run ability, something that has been lacking for quite a while.  Adds some distance which may help.

2.  Deadly Prospect  31/1

Off the board in two grass trips and hopes to put that to an end with third start on surface.   Has had her ups and downs during 9-race career.   Claimed in May and new owner has been experimenting a bit, this time sending her half mile longer than she’s gone before hoping to rattle something good out of her.

3.  My Ranaissance  10/1

Was second in last in high end $125k claiming race in small field, losing a tad of ground late in 10f race.  Prior pair of races were a little longer and she finished double digits in lengths behind.   Goes longer distance and she has not won a race over 10 furlongs since 2012.  Tough task ahead.

4.  The Bear Did It  9/1

Suffered bad injury in February resulting in 2-month layoff.   Returned with low 61 speed, finishing second and offtrack looked to have impact.  In June she finished fifth with nice late close in race at 9.5f and 86 speed.   Appears to have recovered from injury, speed looks good here, extra distance helps.   Could be nice surprise.

5.  Point Ultima  6/5

Made return to turf in last, finishing fourth with 86 speed for 9.5 furlongs. This race will be longest distance of career.   All three career wins have been on turf and is capable of running late.  She seems stubborn and it’s up to her whether or not she desires to put in the effort.  Race could be hers if she feels like it.

6 Coles Run  3/1

Struck speeds in 90’s last year and this year has been lightly raced.  One start in January she was beaten favorite in small field after three month rest, finishing 2nd at 10.5f.   She took another break for 5 months returning in June to go 9.5f and ending up fourth.  Has early speed and probably be the leader in this one.  Just a matter of if that speed can last.  This is second start after a rest and should have some improvement.  Just a question of how much.

7.  Paladex  17/1

Has finished first or second in four of last five races, each one on the board was at 12f or greater in distance.   Speeds have been a bit low, top one for this year is 75.   Races have been in claiming level at higher tag prices than this event.   Speed is the concern for this runner who is very capable at the distance of this race.

8.  Meadowlamb  10/1

Has flipped between dirt and turf in seven career starts with only career win coming on grass.   That win came at 11 furlongs back in February.   She’s been ITM in  four of six route races and comes off a career best speed of 83, albeit, on the dirt at a shorter 8.5 furlongs.   Speeds on both dirt and turf have been going upwards and she may have chance.

The Bear Did It looks to be getting into form again.  Nice price if ready.

Meadowlamb could get piece with improvement in open field.

Point Ultima may take it all if she gets act together.

Point Ultima was much the best in this race, taking over the lead in the second half and pouncing to a 5 stride win.

Flying Chant ran in the back portion and found some strength to run late and got second.

Meadowlamb cut the early fractions but drifted well back in the end. Was better than the rest and held third.
