Full Field Suffers From Anaphylaxis From Biting Insects

Do we have a comeback in the making?  The 7th running of the Astroturf Sprint –G2 proved just as exciting to watch as it was to report.  Our winner, you heard the prediction here first, was comeback kid Biting Insects.

A blistering pace was set by K’s State Of Mind and Raul’s Prospector as both these horse shot out of the gate and battled it out for five furlongs with Raul’s Prospector holding on to a slim lead during that distance.  Sadfly’s Bingo and morning line favorite Cyborg Sid sat comfortably 4 ½ lengths behind the leader but failed to menace.  As reported in the preview, Raul’s Prospector showed stamina problems in the stretch and as they made the turn jockey S Blood saw nothing but finish line ahead of him aboard K’s State Of Mind and a win looked in sight.  However, as he looked behind his shoulder he caught a glimpse of Biting Insects and jockey R Neely passing horses as if he was in the HOV lane in five o’clock traffic.  With 1/16 left to go, it was still uncertain if Biting Insects would have enough track to catch the leader and S Blood was urging K’s State Of Mind under a right hand whip.     Finally, with less than 100 yards left Biting Insects rushed in front to finish only ¾ lengths ahead in a race that 1st through 5th place was only separated by 2 ½ lengths.  Suffragette City, also closed hard coming from more that 11 lengths back and got her nose in front of the tiring Raul’s Prospetor to close out our trifecta.

In our post race interview, R Neely said of Biting Insects, “Wow!  Man I mean wow!  I was barely able to hold on to the reins.  He took off on his own and was determined as any mount I’ve had in a long time.”  Where to next for Biting Insects and trainer mcjohnny4?  Possibly the Gary Carter Handicap G-1 in two weeks but that seems a little soon.  More than likely, he’ll be pointed at either the MD Breeders Bowl G-3 or the Yors Numras Sprint G-3 both being run in week 2860.
