Who Want’s A Millionaire?
First, some background on one of the greatest nicks in the SIM. I came across this breeding combo back in the winter of 2001-02 in researching my SIM breedings for 2002. At the time I was really impressed by Red Ransom, and wanted to come up with a great combo to use with him. In doing my research, I found that he worked really well with sons of Mr. Prospector as the dam-sire. Upon further research I found that son’s of Mr. Prospector worked really well with Raise a Native as the dam/dam-sire combo in the SIM. This created on the back-end an inbreeding of (3 x4) to Raise a Native. A very powerful combo indeed!
So, my first 2yo breeding of 2002 was Red Ransom x Forty Niner x Raise a Native. This colt was named Big Red Niner. Big Red Niner was a fast colt, always bolting for the lead, but failing in sprints. He finally broke his maiden around August of 2002 at a mile on the turf in his 5th start. He then won his next start in allowance race at the same distance. In his 7th start of the year, there weren’t any available races, so I had to run him in a Grade III at a mile. He won that race easily, and I began to wonder if I had something really nice on my hands. Big Red Niner next competed in a Grade I race, and recorded an admiral 2nd place finish to a very nice colt named Shore Lunch. Shore Lunch was the 2002 2yo Juvenile Turf Eclipse Award winner.
In his 1st start of 2003, he won the Panhandle Park Derby Grade III recording a nice speed figure of 102 at 9 furlongs on the turf. That was Big Red Niner’s 2nd Grade III win, and with his placing in Grade I company he was one of the top-rated 3yo colts on the turf. Since, his running style illustrated a need to be on the lead and it looked like he could get a distance of ground, I determined that he’d fair better at longer distances and set his site on the major 3yo Classic races in
Big Red Niner went on, to have a nice career having winning 11 races out of 36 career starts. He earned over $950,000 and was ranked Grade B when he retired.
After seeing some of the early success of Big Red Niner, I had my sights on breeding another along his pedigree lines. I had really wanted to breed a
Spirit of Texas retired, ranked “B”. He was bred to Empire Maker in 2005 and that has produced No Apagues La Luz, the 2005 Eclipse winning 2yo filly. No Apagues La Luz will be competing in the 2006 Bluegrass Oaks.
After seeing the success that the powerful Mr. P son/Raise a Native back-end nick could produce, I decided to try and see if this would work with other son’s of Mr. P in 2003. The first horse I bred under this nick in 2003 was Texas Tornado, Deputy Minister x Gone West x Raise a Native. Texas Tornado was graded placed at 2, competing in the Breeder’s Bowl Juvenile Filly dirt. As a 3yo, Texas Tornado won the Grade I Sweet Nanette and the Grade I Bluegrass Oaks. She had graded place finishes in the California Oaks Grade I,New Years Special Grade I, Santa Ynez Grade II, and lool Oaks Grade I. She competed in the 2004 Breeder’s Bowl Distaff.
Texas Tornado retired with earnings of just over $1,000,000 and a ranking of “A”. She has two foals to date, a stakes winner by Smarty Jones and a 2yo filly by A.P. Indy that runs under Winterheart’s silks.
In 2003 I also bred Red Tejas #44379, Red Ransom x Gone West x Raise a Native. Red Tejas has earned over $2 Million in winning 10 stakes races, including a two Grade I’s and a Grade II. She also has had numerous graded placings. She is currently still in training as the #2 Older Females Turf Sprints, and more than likely will be bred to Sadler’s Wells when her career is done.
Currently, I’ve bred a 6th horse using this nick named Red River War. She is a 2yo filly with the breeding of Red Ransom x Fusaichi Pegagus x Raise a Native. She made her 2yo debut in week 2804 recording 65 SP # at 5f on the turf. I’ll be featuring her shortly in Knightmare’s “
