Strong Field for Burrito Grande Breeders Bowl
The Burrito Grande has attracted a full field of 14 that have earned more than $4m in stakes between them. Any runner not ready to score a triple digit speed figure might as well not bother to show up, as the winning mark is likely to be around 110.
Let’s look at the main contenders first:
8/1 Tassie Devil – cjt4
At first glance, the odds look generous about this 5 year old son of Storm Cat. Although only a five time winner from 19 starts and yet to break through at stakes level, he was only just touched off in a Gr3 last time out when flying up late. He has won with speed figures above 100 from 6 to 7.5 furlongs and is in the form of his life. Jockey Mo Turner has got off to a good start this season and will feel he’s in win a good shot at a big race win.
10/1 Mine Bluff – carpediem
This son of Mineshaft is a triple stakes winner and Gr2 placed. He produced a career best 110 speed figure last time out and may be expected to regress from that, but he’s clearly fit and well. Despite a lot of races behind him, he’s only a four year old and could be a threat with Gossett aboard.
5/1 Euro Fleet – zooomr2
Already a five time stakes winner, Euro Fleet will be looking for a Gr win, having finished in the money more times than his connections probably care to remember. He finished strongly over this distance last time out to win with a figure of 111 and a similar effort will see him go close again.
10/1 Fractal – gorgeous
A winner of seven from 15, Fractal made his breakthrough at stakes level last time out, winning impressively over this distance with a 109. That was a career high, but he is a lightly raced four year old and there could be more to come. He steps up to Gr3 level for the first time here and will be ably assisted by M Gillig.
Others in with winning chances:
9/1 Dank U Hollandia – oostende
Having finished third in the Equinics at his penultimate start, Dank U Hollandia prepared for this event with a comfortable stakes victory in Italy. He ships back to the USA for his fourth crack at a Gr win, his previous efforts having been rewarded with two third place finishes. He will have to reproduce that Equinics effort to score here.
6/1 Kampfen II K’s – supreme
Bred in the purple, this son of Storm Cat has built up a solid record of 10 wins from 22 starts including two at stakes level. He is another that has run well at Gr level without managing to break through. He ran some huge figures as a three year old but is in good enough form now at five to be a threat in this field.
The outsiders:
14/1 Rexton – arthurs
This four year old colt has posted his three best career speed figures in his last four starts. He was not disgraced in his last start in a Gr3 in what was his first start beyond allowance class. To win here may be just too much at this stage, but a money finish is not out of the question.
12/1 Bluelite Special – catdancer
At his very best, this four year old colt has the ability to win this. However, while his recent form has been good, it has been at allowance level with speeds just not good enough here.
22/1 Daring Jet – bigsteve54
Getting on a bit at the age of seven, Daring Jet hasn’t scored above 100 in his last eight starts. That record won’t be good enough here.
8/1 Jam Tomorrow – compassion
This is another runner more than capable of some really big efforts, but he is getting on a bit at the age of six and probably prefers an extra furlong.
16/1 Mountain Ted(Ire) – highclaim
At 35, this colt is the highest ranked dirt sprinter in the field. He is at his best over this distance, but will need to perform at that level to win here. His recent form suggests that a money finish would be about his current peak.
9/1 Herbert – oostende4
This is another runner whose recent form is a touch below his best. A lightly raced five year old, Herbert will have to put his losses in his last two stakes races behind him to win here. With eight wins from 17 starts, and a career best 109, he’s clearly capable.
14/1 Mr. Big B – sportnwood
Yet another son of Storm Cat, this colt was a good winner at stakes level last time out. His only effort at Gr level was dismal though, and he’ll need improvement to win here.
19/1 Huge Glacken – lele
Although highly rated, this colt doesn’t have a top four finish in his last eight starts and would be a major upset if he scored here.
