Freakish Pedro Odds On Favourite In Ireland

Welcome to Ireland for this week’s listed event, The Quick Hogan Memorial. The race will be run at 9 furlongs on the dirt course for a purse of $70,000 and is for 3yos. We have six entrants this week, so let’s take a look at them.

In post one at 2/1 is Greeley’s Indy (Mr. Greeley x Sadler’s Wells x A.P. Indy) owned by overbrooke. He is wheeling back on two weeks rest after finishing third in a sprint stakes here at long odds. This is his first route, and with the stamina in his dam’s family, I expect him to improve even further.

In post two at 7/1 is The Prisoner (Ten Most Wanted x Risen Star x Majestic Prince) owned by sirbear. He had no luck in his two starts as a 2yo, but has won both of his races as a 3yo, at 9f and 9.5f. He’ll likely need an improvement in speed figure here, but is primed to do so, and with Mizzi Russell on board, I like his chances.

In post three at 11/1 is Grass Surg HK (Selkirk x To The Quick x Kerosene) owned by manni24. Manni took a huge chance debuting this colt here in a maiden claimer last time out, but no one dropped a slip and he ran huge, scoring a frontrunning victory at 9.5f with an 81 speed figure. Top jockey Z. Kentucky must have liked what he saw, as he has chosen this longshot as his mount.

In post four at 5/1 is Greenman (Green Desert x Woodman x Gone West) owned by hullwayne. She has been improving recently, running a career best 84 last time out on a sloppy track in an allowance. E C Doyle is very good at getting the most out of her mounts in the stretch, although an off track would make this one even more appealing.

In post five is today’s favourite at even odds, Freakish Pedro (Red Ransom x Dixieland Band x Drone) owned by turbo12. I’ll tell you what’s freakish….his grade G dam his thrown 2 graded winners and a stakes winner. This guy’s record is 7-3-3-1, and he’s likely on his way to a graded win in the future as well. He ran a 93 last time out at 8.5f….there’s no reason to think the extra furlong will trouble him with his pedigree. A. Reed continues to chase Kentucky in the standings, but is confident he will one up him in this race.

Rounding out the field at 7/1 is Ride The Shoopuf(Ger) (Samum(Ger) x Favorite Danzig x Local Suitor) owned by crowblack. She won an allowance in Sweden a couple of races ago in fine fashion, running an 86 over a mile. If she can repeat that effort, she will be right in the thick of things. Her regular Ireland jock D. Nickesy is up, and he knows her well, having ridden her three times in the past.

That is our field. Freakish Pedro looks to be the class of the field, but there are some other strong contenders here who could surely keep him out of the winner’s circle with a good race. Good luck to all the runners, and may they all come home sound.
