In Upper NY, A Small But Select Field

Wingo Slew is owned by vb, and has produced two winning claimers for him; her youngest foal to race is a 3yo maiden filly.  She did better in her racing days, winning 5 stakes among her 16 lifetime victories.  One stakes win was at 7f, three were at 1m, and one was at 1 1/16 miles.

(1)    Hay Hayley, the only bay in a field of chestnuts, races for rharfo, and is by Saratoga Six out of Clever Rate (Pirate’s Bounty x Mr. Prospector), who was winless in 3 starts.  This will be the filly’s first stakes attempt.  Her lifetime best speed figure of 93 was posted in the most recent start, a win in the slop in a CPU allowance, her second win in two starts this year.  She’ll be ridden by the relatively inexperienced P. Ornstar, whose statistics do not look like they’ll help much.  Odds?  9/5.

(2)    Topnotch young rider Z. Ayya will pilot zapspride’s Mail Order Bride, a royally bred daughter of Gone West x Nijinsky II x Round Table.  Before her out-of-the-money finish in the Equinics, she had won 4 straight stakes, as well as having a stakes win in her second start, and a 3rd in the Grade II Camden’s Honor S.  She was far back in her three Grade I attempts, but this 8/5 favorite is clearly a very talented filly.

(3)    The longshot at 4/1 is Sail Again (AUS), bred by zooomr4.  The lightly raced daughter of Reset (AUS) x Afleet x Ajdal was 3rd in the Baku Challenge S. in her only start this year.  As a 2yo, she won her first three starts, including the Boulder Lass S. at 7 ½ furlongs.  She has the services of outstanding rider C. Orza.  She’s a turnback distance-wise – is that why she has the longest odds on the board?

(4)    Winner of half her starts, Barb’s Baba Wawa from the redhead stable has made 3 starts this year, with 2 victories and a third, and in her last start posted her second 90 speed figure.  Her two previous stakes attempts were both off the board, and F. Solomon, normally a solid rider, seems to be in a slump in 2006.  The chestnut (what else?) filly is by Western Winter (a son of Gone West) x Gilded Time x Alydar, and will start at 9/5 odds.
