Full field for the Grade II Distaff Breeders Bowl Cap

A full field of fourteen fillies and mares will be entering the post to dispute the Grade II Distaff Breeders Bowl Cap, which is this week’s main entrée at New York. Judging by the Morning odds of this seven furlong race, we can expect a very evenly matched event. Let’s take a look at the cast:

  1. Jackdaw Castle (15-7-4-0) – Forty Niner filly who likes to be in contention from the start of the race. A problem for her is that she drew the rail, but if she can establish a soft pace, she can be dangerous.
  2. Berzerk Gold (20-4-6-0) – This is a triple graded winner who generally performs better under pressure. Although I prefer her at 8 furlongs, if she gets an honest pace up front, she will be there at the stretch.
  3. They Call Me Magic (24-8-4-0) – Her last three efforts have been somewhat sub par, she needs to recover and show the form she had at the end of last year.
  4. Vanguard (26-12-3-2) – Multiple graded winner. Her best SFs have been at this distance, very consistent and in her best form is a force to be reckoned with. She is the shortest price in the field, but very juicy at 5/1.
  5. Ms. Waqwhat (31-11-2-3) – A winner of five out of her last six races, four stakes included, so we can call her the “Now horse” in this field. If she continues to show this form, we can not overlook her. At 13/1, is a great play.
  6. Dragonbringer (16-7-3-1) – She made us very happy with her last race effort, a clear cut win in the Manta Serria Handicap. This race is somewhat tougher, but she stays sharp and can not be discarded, much more if he can have an easy lead.
  7. Flying Phoenix (AUS) (18-6-6-2) – So far she has been able to win only in listed stakes company, but her SFs are very competitive, she likes to win and is still a fresh mare.
  8. Staked Claim (29-12-0-5) – Disappointing effort in the Manta Serria, in which I think she was too close to the pace. Now with more speed in the race, look for an improved performance on her part. Dangerous.
  9. Empire Gold (24-10-4-3) – This is the sleeper of the race. Much better at longer distances, if she is able to rally without too much traffic trouble, she will be a main player against this field. She is the longest shot on the board at 19/1.
  10. Puentelarra (27-10-2-6) – Another one who figures to be part of the first flight, and this is the main reason why I am looking elsewhere for the moment, not to mention that her last graded efforts have been on the down side.
  11. Kacymygirl (21-9-5-2) – The same we wrote about Puentelarra can be said about this filly, to which the circumstances of the race do not favor at all. Looking elsewhere for now.
  12. Spinning Nines (16-6-5-2) – She is coming out of a six weeks rest, which can help her chances, and her last race was a route, another one of my favorite angles. If her jockey is able to rate her, she should be a major force in this event, although she has not beaten graded company yet.
  13. Mach Cat (15-8-3-2) – She drew a superb post, lightly raced, very consistent, but again, part of the initial fray for the lead. Not without a chance, but I’ll pass.
  14. Aniron (IRE) (28-9-10-5) – Great post, convenient stalking style of racing and from her lifetime record, you can see she likes to bring a check to the barn. SFs are also on the improve side. My favorite.

Difficult race to choose a winner, but Aniron gets the nod, and also like Staked Claim to form a nice exacta box. Ms Waqwhat and Empire Gold can be nice Tri and Superfecta complements, but the race can shape into many forms.

Good Luck to all!!!
