Sweet Nanette
2/21/2006 Grade I Sweet Nanette
All week long the buzz on the backside leading up to the Grade I Sweet Nanette was how the condition of the track was going to come up on Saturday and how the field was going to look with the Equinics the previous week. Let’s see how the race played out.
All the horse’s comfortably settled in the gate, and then they were off. You Can’t Catch Me broke alertly from the gate from the outside, chased hard from the rail by Power of Azroc. Unbridled Mistress broke well to take up the chase from the outside and settled comfortably in 3rd.
Fame or Fortune and Dixieland Slam settled near the back of the field rounding the 1st turn. You Can’t Catch Me set a comfortable pace and was on the lead throughout the backstretch. Meanwhile, Unbridled Mistress stalked the leader comfortably in hand and edged a bit closer entering the turn.
As they hit the top of the stretch, Migsy gave a right handed shoulder tap and Unbridled Mistress accelerated and finished up well winning by 2 lengths in a sharp time of 1:35 2/5, just 1/5 off the stakes record set by Reduhlert in 2002. Unbridled Mistress paid $18.00 for the win.
Fame or Fortune made a belated rally for 2nd, while the pacesetter You Can’t Catch Me faltered in the final 1/16 for 3rd. The exacta paid $100.90 and the trifecta paid $907.40
Unbridled Mistress takes her record to 6-4-1-0 with earnings of $368,370 with her 1st Grade I victory. She is currently ranked #9 in the 3yo Filly division. Her final prep schedule for the Bluegrass Oaks was unavailable at press time.
Trainer fatattack won the 2004 edition of the Sweet Nanette with Texas Tornado on her way to capturing the 2004 Bluegrass Oaks.
