Catch This Rising Star

The Marinia stable was hoping for a big weekend when it emptied the barn – entering all nine horses into races this weekend.  With two failing to draw in, five out of the money, and one third, you might think the results were disappointing, but not when the ninth one, Alastor, gave the stable its 101st win by taking the Grade III Risen Star Stakes.

The win marked the third stakes win in a row for the brown son of Squirtle Squirt and the sire’s first graded stakes winner in the sim.

With a relatively modest speed figure of 96, and a diluted field due to last weekend’s Equinics, Alastor still has questions to answer, and he will need another impressive performance to qualify for a certain race in early May, but so far he looks like a colt deserving watching.  Monday’s Las Vegas future book may be a bettor’s last chance at value.

As expected, the early pace of the Risen Star was dominated by the speedy Editorialize, but jockey Bo Ryan could not get the colt to take advantage of the easy lead, and the Correction trainee faded to seventh.

Surfer’s Giant Run is another one to watch as he showed he can handle routes and took a stalking trip to a second place finish as the favorite.

The hard-charging Death Alley Driver edged out the stalking Cash is King for the show position to complete a $743.30 trifecta.
