Sophomore Fillies Go Out With A Bang
Ten sophomore filly sprinters are here in Sweden for The Stupidly Star(IRE) Stakes, a 7.5 furlong race on the dirt course for a purse of $60,000. One last chance to run against fillies their own age before moving into the ranks of older fillies and mares. This should be an exciting one, as all of these little ladies are talented.Leading the post parade is Craftfly’s Wells, a daughter of Crafty Prospector out of a Sadler’s Wells mare. She began her career on turf, but took off when she made the switch to dirt. She’s won two stakes, at 6f and also 8.5f, and has performed well up to 10f. She likes to come from behind, which may be a plus here with many frontrunners in the field. In post two is Fleeting Dixie, a daughter of Afleet out of a General Meeting mare. Stakes-placed in her second career start, she has won a stakes at a mile and is also graded-placed, having run third in the G2 Mellow Breeze Handicap. She’s run a 106 at this distance, and likes to be on or near the lead. In post three is Happy Jadene, a daughter of Johannesburg out of an Alhaarth(Ire) mare. It took awhile to hit on this girl’s best surface and distance, but once that was figured out, she took off, with all three of her career victories taking place in her last three trips to the post, all at today’s distance. She ran a 102 last time out, and likes to stalk the lead.In post four is Princess Jennah, a royally-bred daughter of Woodman out of a Storm Cat mare. She has only run 7 times, but she has won three and run third three times, only missing the board once in her short career. She is also a stalker. In post five is Kepler Leprer, a daughter of Aptitude out of a Trempolino mare. She has run a lot and won a good amount of money, running mostly in allowance company, although she has run third in one of her few stakes appearances. She’s won three of her last four, and S. Jacobsson, who is up today, rode when she won an allowance here not that long ago.In post six is Flying Phoenix(Aus), the 27th ranked filly in the division. She is by Bel Esprit(Aus) out of an Octagonal(NZ) mare. This flying bird has won two stakes at 7 furlongs, running a 108 in one of them, and ran second in the G3 Dolly Prummond Stakes against older females two races ago. Top jockey P. Jones hopes to add to her stakes tally. In post seven is Jackdaw Castle, who beat Flying Phoenix(Aus) last time out. This Forty Niner gal runs best right up front, and has won six of her nine sprints, finishing second in two others. Her best races are a 105 and 106, and she loves to force everyone to try and catch her.In post eight is Tubular(BRZ), a daughter of Siphon(BRZ) out of a Baldski mare. Buzzbarn claimed her for 50K five races back, and she has responded well to her new trainer, collecting a win, a second, and a third in her three stakes races. She likes to close, and has a good chance here.In post nine is manon’s The Teacher, a daughter of Awesome Again out of the stakeswinning Danzig mare Doctor J.O. She’s only run six times, but won an allowance last time out against older females. She’s another stalker, but this will be her biggest test yet. Geez Gonz, it’s about time you got around to trying a sprint, buddy. 😉Rounding out the field is gonzo2’s Larry’s Faye, a daughter of Carson City out of a Nureyev mare. This little frontrunner won her first stakes last time out, and has won three races in a row. She will have to fight off Jackdaw Castle for the lead here though.Geesh, with a speed duel up front between Jackdaw Castle and Larry’s Faye, it certainly opens things up for the stalkers and closers here. This one could set up perfectly for a mid-pack type like Flying Phoenix(Aus), but she has plenty of competition here. This will be an exciting end to the year for these 3yo fillies, looking to get one last win before they age. Good luck to all and may they all come home sound.
