Tale of Seattle Spotlights Fillies & Mares
The EWC starts the 2-year season off with a pair of Showcase races on the dirt and grass open to all residency horses. Irish Luck Farms recently questioned why not have a race for just the girls….well, why not? Thus the birth of Tale of Seattle, a maiden stake race just for the girls, which will be held in Florida. The residents at EWC are eligible to enter fillies and mares into this 2-year old turf race which will be going a distance of 6 furlongs on the turf and only maidens are eligible for the race.
Tale of Seattle is a retired mare who won 15 races in her 42 career starts. Although she never won a graded race, she made a mark for herself with picking up 13 non-grade stake wins and earning in excess of $640,000. She is rated C as a game-dam and has produced a pair of male children. All of her wins came in sprint races, the majority on the turf.
1. AUCTION CHANT 19-1
Trained by Mubofsmub
The fourth horse spawned out of F-rated game-dam Tioga, who has already produced three others that have won a combined 11 races in 44 starts. Tioga was a dirt runner earning over $140k and raced once on the grass. Sire Andromeda’s Hero has been lightly used and has not produced a winner since 2010. This first time starter hopes to break this trend.
2. FRENCHY CONNECTION 13-1
Trained by Indyatw
G-rated game-dam had one win in 24 starts and did her running on the dirt. She does bring into the bloodline the dam-sire of Rahy, a strong producer of grass runners. Sire French Deputy is the opposite producing mostly dirt runners. In the early stages of 2012 French Deputy has seen a rather high 23% of her 2-year olds getting victories. A little mixture with the racing surfaces leads to a toss-up as to how this first time starter will fare.
3. SLAM THE GANTLET 19-1
Trained by Sjmeola5
Daughter to Grand Slam, who has seen her children preferring the dirt 3 to 1 over the grass since 2008. This beautiful brown mare is a slow starter as she has raced on the dirt twice and showed some late speed, but finished off the board with speeds of 59 in each race. She looks for a change in scenery and scoots over to the turf for the first time. I have a feeling this gal will find the longer races more appealing and it’ll be a matter of time for her to find success
4. POUR HOF 9-1
Trained by Thehofman3
G-rated game-dam Cryptic Stride was used with this female and won three races in her 35 career starts earning just over $100k. Those wins all came in turf routes. Pour Moi is a first year sire who has bred 27 2-year olds with 18% snagging victories, an overwhelming 94% game on the grass. Strong bloodlines are abundant in this young lady and she could fry up the turf in her debut.
5. PURE NONSENSE 7-1
Trained by Raceck3
A nicely bred Street Sense x Giant’s Causeway x Grand Slap mare. The bloodline favors the dirt, but worth a shot putting this first time runner on the grass to see what she can do. She comes out of game-dam Batting Practice (G-rated), a winner of 3 races (all dirt) in 28 starts. Breeding line brings tons of hope in this event!
6. PYRAMID OF CAIRO 8-1
Trained by Zipchippy
Sire Zabeel has had 19% of her 2-year olds win a race this season and the offspring favor the grass by a 3 to 1 margin. With one start behind her, Pyramid finished fifth going 5.5f with a speed of 61 as the second choice in a full field. She is a scratch bred with bloodlines flowing in from Kingmambo and Sadler’s Wells and she is bound to improve off her first start.
7. OH FIDDLE STICKS 13-1
Trained by Celebrial
Makes first time start and is out of G-rated game-dam Lilly’s Lemon. Lilly won just shy of $100k with two career wins on the turf in 39 starts. Sire New Approach has a high 91% of her children finding success on the turf. This year, 15% of 2-year olds have earned a victory with one celebrating a pair of stake wins. Oh Fiddle Sticks has good grass breeding background and should fare well on this surface.
8. NAREMBURN 54-1
Trained by Bbudgievic
A first time starter who is mothered by Macho Uno. This sire has bred five runners this year, none of which have found the winner’s circle. Last year’s crop saw less than half (44%) of offspring pick up a win. Her babies favor the dirt over the grass by a 2 to 1 margin and this one will need to be one of the exceptions to steal this race.
9. THAT KINDA SPIN 14-1
Trained by Sprinter3
Comes out of F-rated game-dam That Gal, a mare that won $44k with five wins in 31 starts, the majority coming on the dirt. This first time starter is the daughter of Hard Spun, who has a modest 16% of this year’s 2-year olds picking up a win. Hard Spun siblings, since 2008, have a strong 2 to 1 preference for the dirt. Dam Sire Empire Maker siblings prefer the dirt also, however, Swain, the DSS, tend towards the grass. Mixed signals come out of the pedigree and it may take a few races to see where she belongs. May end up liking both surfaces.
10. SJ’s SILVER CANDY 25-1
Trained by Ufslfams
First year sire Twirling Candy has sent 20 two year olds into the starting gate and none of them have found success. This lady has run twice and displayed early speed but fizzled out in the later stages of the races with speeds of 63 and 65. Both races came on the dirt and she will try to find some luck by switching over to the grass.
11. TSR’s FIVECOVERS 34-1
Trained by Madline
In February, this lady made her debut in the EWC Sire Showcase turf race and finished a well back 11th. Not giving up, she made a comeback in March with a second , missing by ¾ of a length at steep odds of 29-1 and an improvement of speed from 56 to 64. Sire Cherokee Five isn’t much to write home about, however, dam sire Rock of Gibraltar and DSS Kingmambo are well known grass runners and could make an impact with this runner.
12. BRING THE VIPER 6-1
Trained by Les111
In just over two years, Sire Sebring has had a strong 76% of her children show favor to grass races. G-rated game-dam Pedal Fuji sets the background bone to this lady, a horse that earned a bit over $50k in her career with 3 turf route wins in 24 starts. Bring the Viper will be stepping on to the track for the first time and does have some grass ability in her bloodline. Large field will be a challenge to show it off in.
13. OVERCLOCKING 50-1
Trained by Avondale
Sire Thunder Gulch has brought 12 children into the sim-world this year and none of them have crossed the wire first. That includes Overclocking who has raced twice, (once each on dirt and turf) and has finished well back both times with a top speed of 52 in her dirt race. Hard to see this one getting win as F-rated game-dam Ted Bucks performed best on the dirt.
14. AWESOME SCAT 11-1
Trained by Irishmstaz
Sire Twining has produced one two year old as a winner this year out of seven that has been bred. This gal does have some Awesome Again in the bloodline as the dam-sire. She has one start back in March and pulled off a second at 8-1 after taking the lead at the ¾-pole. She sure looks like she could make a statement in this start.
15. LAVERNE N SHIRLEY 10-1
Trained by Kashburn
Finished third in the EWC Sire Showcase in February, missing by just under two strides with speed of 70. Returned in April with a fifth and beaten in stretch with speed of 64. Likes to run on front and is daughter of Fantastic Light, who has 18% of 2-year olds coming out with a win. This one will need to find a way to make early speed last.
16. GET ON THE BUS 15-1
Trained by Novajoe
Get on the Bus makes her second lifetime start, finishing third in her debut, but with an uninspiring speed of 59. She comes out of sire Scat Daddy, where her kids find the dirt more favorable. Get on the Bus switches to the turf to see if she can improve, however, she is derived from game-dam Hotterthanthesun, (G-rated) who found her success on the dirt coming in the money 15 of 30 times with three wins. Everything points to dirt for this youngster, however, some things aren’t as they may seem
17. MINNIE’s O’PRADO 21-1
Trained by Alysalley
This light grey mare goes to the starting gate for the first time and comes out of the shadows of game-dam Millie’s Spirit, a horse that is G-rated with four career wins on the turf in 30 lifetime starts. Paddy O’Prado, the mother of this runner, is a first-year sire that has been very much used with 27 youngsters bred this year and only 7% picking up a win. The sire hasn’t panned out this year but maybe this one will show something.
18. SILLY PHILLIES 23-1
Trained by Dueces
This gal comes out of Silver Charm, who has had some success this year with 20% of her offspring hitting the wire first. Since 2008, her children have found favor with the dirt by a 4 to 1 margin. This entrant comes from 4-time stake winner Rutherford Ondirt, a C-rated game-dam. Over her career, she won 10 races, evenly split between dirt and turf. Two other babies have been bred by her and they have combined for 4 wins in 34 starts. Not much success thus far in breeding and there are hopes that this lady will excel.
19. FIRST BULB 19-1
Trained by Grandalley
Beaten favorite in early May start finishing third at 4.5f with 62 speed. That race was on the dirt and this gal ships from North Korea for this race. First Samurai sired this gal and 2012’s offspring has won 17% predominantly on the dirt. Travel is a concern with this entrant as well as whether she will like the grass, the travel being a greater concern to me.
Awesome Scat had tough lost in first race and gets my top pick with improvement in speed numbers .
Pour Hof has some decent bloodlines and could fare well in first start.
Likewise with Pyramid of Cairo, who gets my third pick.
