Distaff Breeders Bowl Cap

The second graded race on Sunday’s card in Maryland will be the Distaff Breeders Bowl Cup (G2) at seven furlongs on the dirt. The race will be open to fillies and mares three-year-olds and up who will all be contending for the $375,000 total purse. With clear skies on the horizon, the field looks forward to a fast track at its 3:20 PM EST post time. A full field of fourteen fillies and mares will be lining up in the Starting gate for this Sunday’s race, let’s take a look through this years contenders. 

  1. Mr Grom – graywolf8 – C. Ambrose – 22/1 

Making her graded stakes debut this weekend, the five-year-old bay mare is sired by Gormley and is out of an allowance winning dam. The bay mare is lightly raced with just thirteen career starts and most recently started last month during a listed stakes race here in Maryland over six and a half furlongs. Off the pace at the start in ninth, she would rally slightly in the stretch to cross the wire in eighth while setting a speed figure of one hundred in her listed stakes debut. Her most recent win was also last month during an allowance race over seven furlongs for local Kentucky-bred fillies and mares. She was off the pace at the break here as well but would make her move towards the middle of the sprint before going on to win by a neck at the wire. The mare will be going off as the morning line longshot. 

2. Fine Sight To See (AUS) – slowjet2 – K. Banner – 15/1 

The Australian-bred four-year-old filly has found an affinity for the dirt, winning her most recent start before coming into this race. She will also be returning to a graded stakes company after taking an extended step down in class. Her most recent race was last month during an allowance race in Iowa over seven furlongs over a sloppy track. Forwardly placed and just off the pace of the front runners in third, the filly took control of the pace midway through the race and went on to win by four and three-quarter lengths while posting a speed figure of one hundred eight. Her last graded start was in January of last year during the Yanta Snez Stakes (G2) at seven furlongs in California. 

3. Leaving Home – roosterbooster – G. Garbaccio – 9/1 

Making her graded stakes debut with this Sunday’s race the four-year-old daughter of Speightstown is lightly raced with just eight career starts. She’s coming into this race with her most recent start being in December of last year during a listed stakes race over seven furlongs in Arkansas. She took the field from gate to wire in this race, winning by three lengths and recording a lifetime best speed figure of one hundred sixteen. The filly has a total of five career wins and has only finished off the board once in her career, which was in her first start against allowance company in the second start of her career where she finished fifth in her debut against other winners. 

4. Parasocial – asrstar12 – S. Shinkle – 5/1 

Nearing thirty career starts, the daughter of Into Mischief is one of the more experienced mares in the field and is coming into this race off of a win in an allowance race. She will also be returning to graded company with this race, having previously attained a Grade III win. Her most recent start was in an allowance race over seven and a half furlongs in West Virginia last December. Forwardly placed in third out of the gate and being rated just behind the front runners, the bay mare wasn’t asked to run until the field entered the stretch. She would go on to win the race by one and three-quarter lengths while setting a speed figure of one hundred seven. Her most recent graded start came in November of last year during the Miss Mags Sprint (G3) at seven furlongs in which she would finish eighth. 

5. Hurt City – monmouth – V. Elliott –6/1 

Returning to graded company after a brief step down in class, the six-year-old mare by Temple City will be making her twenty-first lifetime start. She is coming into this race off of a win in a listed stakes race over a mile in Arizona in December of last year. Well off the pace at the start in eleventh, the mare started picking off other runners out in front of her early on in the race. Eventually the mare would cross the wire two lengths in front with a speed figure of one hundred ten. Her most recent graded start came in late September during the Good Times Handicap (G2) at a mile overseas in the UAE in which she would finish sixth. 

6. Movant – hold4old – J. Hernandez – 5/1 

Making her twenty-first career start on Sunday, the six-year-old mare is sired by Laoban and bred in Kentucky. Her most recent start came in December of last year during the Winter Wonderland Distaff (G1) at seven and a half furlongs in Illinois. The mare was kept off the pace at the break in ninth out of the gate, though she began moving forward early in the race. At the wire she had worked her way up to third, setting a speed figure of one hundred ten. Her most recent win came in August during The Rancho Renaldo (G3) at six and a half furlongs across the country in California. Off the pace early in this race too, she waited a bit longer to make her move in this race until the field reached the middle of the sprint. She would win the race by one and three-quarter lengths while setting a speed figure of one hundred eight. 

7. Healmyaddictions – asrdistorted – P. Haynes – 17/1 

Coming back for her second start against graded company, the four-year-old chestnut filly by War Front most recently started in December overseas in Japan during the Hot Ice Stakes (G3) over seven furlongs in her graded stakes debut. Trailing the field early in eighth, the filly wouldn’t make much of a move in the race, going past one horse in the final furlongs to finish in seventh while setting a speed figure of one hundred two. Her most recent win was in last August during an allowance race in India over the same distance. Facing a smaller field of six, the filly settled into the middle of the field out of the gate and began to put away other horses fairly early on in the race. She would win the contest by one- and three-quarter lengths before finishing second in a listed stakes a couple of months later. 

8. Doolittle Doomore – blankpoin1 – L. Colocci – 8/1 

Having another go at Grade I company, this five-year-old mare is an accomplished Grade II winner and has made twenty lifetime starts. Sired by Gunnevera and out of a stakes winning dam, this mare is also the earner of over one million in career earnings, the only filly or mare in the field to do so. Her most recent stat came in December of last year in New York during the Elaine’s Big Dance (G2) at six and a half furlongs. Out of the gate and settling into the middle of the pack, she would be asked to make her move midway through the race and would cross the wire in second while setting speed figure of one hundred six. Her most recent win was in February of last year across the country in California during the Santa Maria Stakes (G2) at seven furlongs. More forwardly placed in this race at third out of the gate, the mare was asked to move at a similar point in the race. She would go on to win by a quarter of a length while setting a lifetime best speed figure of one hundred thirteen. 

9. El Sting Ya – graywolf13 – T. Vincent – 21/1 

A former claimer and now testing out graded company again, the seven-year-old mare was bred in West Virginia and is sired by Siente El Trueno and out of a Grade III winning dam who has produced two listed stakes placed runners. She is lightly raced, making just eighteen career starts over her years on the track. Her most recent start came last month in Delaware over six and a half furlongs in a listed stakes race on a sloppy dirt track. She would be placed in the middle of the field early out of the gate, but started to fade back in the final furlongs before crossing the wire in seventh, setting a speed figure of ninety-three. Her most recent win was in August of last year during an allowance race over seven and a half furlongs for local bred runners. Facing a small five-horse field, she was out of the gate in fourth at the break and started to make her move midway through the race. She went on to win the race by a head and recording a speed figure of one hundred four. 

10. Crafty Beauty (SKOR) – holdingnyc – N. Ambrose – 14/1 

Returning to graded company after a brief step down in class, this eight-year-old mare is the oldest entrant to draw into the race on Sunday. The brown mare is sired by Take Charge Indy and is out of a stakes placed dam. She is lightly raced for her eight years and will be making her twenty-fifth career start this weekend. Her most recent start came last month during a listed stakes race over seven furlongs in Illinois. Out of the gate and trailing most of the field in seventh, the mare faded in the final stages of the race to cross the wire in ninth, setting a speed figure of ninety-three. Her most recent graded start came in her prior start, the Excuse Me Miss Sprint (G3) at six furlongs in Vermont in which she would finish fourth. Her most recent win was in the start before during a listed stakes race at six furlongs in Virginia. Off the pace in ninth at the start, she began to make her move midway through the race and went on to win by one and a quarter lengths. 

11. Have A Few – noblemission – B. Renfroe – 19/1 

Coming into this race off a win and returning to graded company after a step down in class, the four-year-old daughter of the late Speightstown is making her thirteenth lifetime start this Sunday. Her most recent race came last month in New York during an allowance race over six and a half furlongs on a track rated as good. She took a big step up in this race, turning in a speed figure of one hundred ten, which is a lifetime best for the chestnut filly. Back in eighth at the start of the race, she would begin making her move at the midway point in the race and go on to win by four and three-quarter lengths. Her most recent graded start was in July of last year, also in New York, in the Exam Stakes (G1) at seven furlongs. Off the pace out of the gate in this race as well, she would start losing ground at the midway point before going on to finish tenth. 

12. La Chimichanga – ottico – G. Giant – 18/1 

Lightly raced with eleven career starts, this four-year-old filly by top sire Tapit is an established graded winner. The light grey filly most recently started in November of last year during the Breeders Bowl F and M Sprint (G1) at seven furlongs in California. Well off the pace at the start in fourteenth, she wasn’t asked until the stretch to make a move, but the filly only was able to get up for twelfth at the wire. Her most recent win was in July of last year on the other coast in New York during the Exam Stakes (G1) over the same distance. Here too the filly was well off the pace early and trailing most of the field. She did start to pick up the pace midway through the sprint and would win by a quarter length, setting a speed figure of one hundred eight, equaling a lifetime best speed figure set in her prior start at the allowance level. 

13. Affirmed What Now – dbsirecards – B. Romberg – 15/1 

Set to make her fifteenth career start in this race, the Indiana-bred four-year-old daughter of What Now is an accomplished runner against graded company. Her most recent start came in December of last year overseas in Japan during the Hot Ice Stakes (G3) at seven furlongs. The filly was out of the gate in seventh, trailing much of the field. She would maintain this position for most of the race, right up until asked as the field entered the stretch. She would go on to cross the wire in second, setting a speed figure of one hundred six. Her most recent win was in February of last year overseas in the UAE during the Riding Dirty Stakes (G1), also at seven furlongs. Placed in the middle of the pack out of the gate, the filly would start making an earlier move in this start, beginning to pick off horses closer to the midway point of the race and going on to win by a length. 

14. Union Reflections – asrstar5 – H. Wheatley – 6/1 

This well-bred five-year-old mare is by Union Rags. With eighteen career starts, the mare will be returning to graded company in this race. Her most recent start was in December of last year during a listed stakes race over nine furlongs in California. Placed towards the back of the pack in the seven-horse field out of the gate, the mare started to pick off other horses early on. She would lose some ground in the stretch as the late closers caught up. She would end up crossing the wire in fifth, setting a speed figure of one hundred seven. Her most recent graded start was in September of last year during The Jockey Filly Cup (G1) at a mile and three-sixteenths. Her most recent win was in October of 2023 during an allowance race over nine furlongs. Out of the gate in fourth, she started making her move midway through the race and went on to win by two lengths. The mare has never started under a mile.

    Really great preview. I’m always happy to see some non-elite sires represented in grades like Laoban, Take Charge Indy and the WV sire!

    Man, I have acquired a lot of Laobans! This one is a homebred though.
