Superfilly Handicap

The highlight race for this weekend in New York is the Superfilly Handicap (G1) which is set to go off over a mile and one-sixteenth on the main dirt track. The race is open to three-year-old fillies and up, and is offering a total purse of $750,000. This year’s race has drawn a field of ten contenders, racing from four to six years of age. Let’s take a look at the contenders in this years running. 

  1. A K A The Empire – harrylanlow1 – P. Syduck – 9/2 

Coming into this race off of three consecutive wins, the five-year-old mare out of Empire Maker has drawn the inside rail in Sunday’s race. The most recent start for the bay mare came in a listed stakes over eight and a half furlongs in Ohio, which she won by two and a quarter lengths with a speed figure of one hundred fifteen. Prior to this the mare started in The Golfer’s Wage (G2) at the same distance. With the mare breaking towards the rear of the field, she would be urged to make a move midway through the race and go on to win by two and a half lengths. 

2. Seasons Beatings – uncleduppy – M. Kelly – 9/1 

Next up is the first of two six-year-olds in the race this weekend. The mare has seven wins out of twenty-one lifetime starts. The most recent for the bay mare was in June during the Steadhemp / Mike Phipps Handicap over a mile and one-sixteenth. The mare broke towards the forward half of the field, setting off the pace in fourth early on. She would be overtaken in the stretch to cross the wire in sixth, setting a speed figure of one hundred six. The most recent win for the mare was in April during an allowance race over seven furlongs, where she was briefly in second at the break, but quickly overtook the lead and led nearly gate to wire. 

3. Power Enforcer – scoobisnax – V. Jennings – 7/1 

At five years of age, this roan mare by Arrogate will be making her graded stakes debut this Sunday. The most recent start for the mare came in a listed stakes race in Arkansas over eight and a half furlongs. In this race, the mare came out of the gate last and wasn’t urged to make a move until the field entered the stretch. With a kick of speed, the mare was able to get up under the wire in fourth, just three lengths off the pace, and with a speed figure of one hundred twelve. In her prior start, another listed stakes over the same distance in Norway, the mare ran in a similar fashion, going on to win by three, equaling the same speed figure. 

4. Wreckless Alexis – buffy8 – W. Cahill – 6/1 

Next up will be a five-year-old mare that will be returning to graded company after taking a step down in class to mostly run in allowance caliber races. The brown daughter of Connect most recently listed in a listed stakes race over eight and a half furlongs this past July. The mare settled into fourth out of the gate and was asked midway through the race to make her bid for the front. She would go on to win the race by three and a quarter lengths while setting a speed figure of one hundred fourteen. This win was preceded by four consecutive wins in allowance races at eight furlongs. The most recent graded start for the mare was in March of last year during the Dirtydirtydishragyou Stakes where she would finish ninth. 

5. Ryans Gate – ballgame – B. Scott – 9/2 

In the middle starting gate, this mare will be the first entrant into the gate to exceed career earnings of one million dollars and is the second daughter of Arrogate to go into the gates this Sunday. The most recent start for this light grey mare came in July during the Snownut Handicap (G2) in Spain. The mare would be sent out of the gate straight to the lead in this mile long race but would be caught late in the stretch and would ultimately cross the wire in third, setting a speed figure of one hundred ten. The most recent win for the mare was this past March during the Winchester Cap (G3) in Argentina where the mare led the field gate to wire to win by a length and a half. 

6. Late Innings – retama – D. Givins – 21/1 

The longshot of Sunday’s field, this six-year-old mare will be making her first graded start since April of last year. Since that time, the light gray mare has been racing at the allowance level, most recently starting over seven and a half furlongs in a race in West Virginia. The mare took this field gate to wire and set a speed figure of one hundred and three for the race. Her last graded start came in April of last year during The Virgnia Madison (G2) over seven-eighths of a mile where she would be held just off the pace in second, but fade to fifth at the wire.  

7. Book Of Gates – wetfast – V. Jef – 9/1 

In the seventh gate, we have yet another mare going to the post sired by the late Arrogate. This roan mare is a Grade II winner and has won seven starts in a total of twenty-three trips to the starting gate to date. The most recent start for the mare came here in New York during the Dancer Cap (G2) over seven-eighths of a mile this past August. The mare was sent out of the gate in tenth, towards the rear of the field, though urged to make her move midway through the race. She mare would never fire in this race, and came across the wire in seventh, setting a speed figure of one hundred four. Her prior start in the Delta Tau Chi Spint (G2) over the same distance would see the mare win by a length and a half. Though both of these races came over seven furlongs, the mare has finished on the board in the past in races up to nine and a half furlongs. 

8. Hadalookaround – throwinstones – K. Proehl – 5/1 

Trying to secure her first graded win, this roan daughter of Distorted Humor recently took a step down in class for her most recent race. This race was in a listed stakes in New Mexico over a mile. The mare came out of the gate and settled into a stalking position towards the rear of the field in ninth but would quickly start to pick off other horses in the race. She would go on to cross the wire in front by one and a half lengths while setting a speed figure of one hundred fourteen. The most recent graded start for the mare was in her prior start, which came in the Cubic Zirconia Path Stakes (G3) over a mile and one-sixteenth this past April. Run in a similar fashion, the mare was held back in tenth at the start, made her move at the midway point, and crossed the wire second. 

9. Riley Reid – beerkeg4 – J. Hornibrook – 5/1 

With eighteen lifetime starts, this five-year-old mare by War Front will be looking to see if she can come back and win the race that she lost by a head at the wire last year. The bay mare is the second million-dollar earning runner to go into the starting gate for this weekends’ race. The most recent start for the mare was right here in New York during the Go For The Gold Stakes (G1) over a mile and one-eighth. The mare was placed well off the pace at the start of the race, held back in a stalking position in eleventh and not asked to make her bid until the field entered the stretch. The mare may have made her bid too late as she crossed the wire in seventh while setting a speed figure of one hundred twelve. The most recent win for the mare came in March of 2021 during the Iool Oaks over a mile and one-sixteenth. She again was stalking the pace from far off the pace in this race, though made her bid for the front earlier and went on to win by two. The mare would go on to finish second in the Bluegrass Oaks (G1) and third in that years’ running of the Breeders’ Bowl Distaff (G1). 

10. Hopkinsons Sister – hofcadet – A. Jolly – 10/1 

The last horse to go into the gate for this Sunday’s race, this four-year-old filly we be the youngest contender to go into vie for victory in his weekends highlight race and is out of the Hall Of Fame broodmare Union Jack Flyer. The filly is returning to the States after taking a trip over to France to start in the The Start Up (G1) over a mile to make her turf debut. The filly was fourth out of the gate, settling just off the pace, but started to fade off midway through the race and crossed the wire in fourteenth, finding the turf not to her liking. Her most recent start over the dirt was this past May during the Poor Mona Lisa Handicap (G3) at a mile and one-eighth, where she would finish sixth and set a speed figure of one hundred ten. The most recent win for the mare was in February during The Santa Marina Handicap (G1) over a mile and one-sixteenth, where she would be forwardly placed in third out of the gate and go on to win by half a length while setting a lifetime best speed figure of one hundred nineteen.
