GII Disco Inferno Stakes Preview

SATURDAY 14 JANUARY 2023 – 2:55PM EST | SWEDEN | 11 FURLONGS | FAST DIRT | $375,000
Restricted to 4 Year Olds and Older, Fillies and Mares | 11 RUNNERS

#1 GLOCK GOES BANG – mtk2010 – 32/1
The lightly raced five year old mare by English Channel tries her luck in graded company for the first time here. Last time out she was far from disgraced when an outsider in the Ducky Dirt Mare Route Stakes over ten furlongs. She plugged on into fifth after getting outpaced in the first half of the race. Before that she ran up a trio of restricted allowance victories, all over 10 furlongs. The extra furlong here will help but the sharp step up in class possibly may not.

#2 WINTER COOKIE – watertown – 5/1
Watertown’s five year old comes here after a disappointing run in a Grade III in Kansas six weeks ago, finishing behind three of his rivals today. After not being able to get near the pace early she faded into 11th, beaten 11 lengths. She does have a stakes win and a stakes runner up to her name over this distance and is certainly at her best when racing up with the pace. The 114 speed figure for that stakes victory puts her in with every chance as long as she can lie up with the early speed, which is far from certain.

#3 AMERICAN PIT – rubber2021 – 12/1
The American Pharoah mare ships in from Kentucky after her run the Breeders’ Bowl Distaff. That was her first run against older horses and she kept on past beaten horses late into 11th. Previous to that run, against her own age group, she had a pair of Grade I wins over ten furlongs. Sitting off the pace she closed to good effect in the second half of those races to pull away to comfortable victories. If she settles early then she may have every chance of recording her seventh career victory and adding to her impressive $1.5m prize money earned. Top Czech based jockey J Wilson is booked to do the steering.

#4 CONCUSSIVE INDY – texcat – 4/1 F
The favourite is texcat’s dual surface winning six year old mare by Deep Impact. She has already won in this grade previously on the dirt and has run creditably in top grade races on both surfaces throughout her career. After three good runs on turf, including a comfortable Grade III win, she returns to dirt here which I suspect is marginally her favourite surface. The last dirt run in July was a narrow defeat into second over ten furlongs in this grade. The 116 speed figure, which was a joint career high, should put her right up there at the finish.

#5 LYANNA’S HEART – grrm2 – 6/1
Another mare who is equally at home on either surface is this five year old by Heart’s Cry. Trying graded class for the first time after three career stakes victories, two on dirt and the other on grass. Last time out she sightly underperformed in Turkey on the turf, fading quite quickly late in the race to finish fourth over ten furlongs. She will try to settle on the pace early but will she stay there now upgraded?

#6 MRS KITTY – nycowboy – 12/1
The biggest earner in the race is this Big Brown four year old filly, with almost $2m in career purses. The former Horse of the Year has eight first or second place finishes in Grade I and Grade II races but has done most of her winning over a mile or less. Her last win was in 2021 when a juvenile and is stepped up in distance here to try to kickstart a revival in fortunes. Her stamina has to be taken on trust as previous attempts at stretching out have not gone entirely to plan. Top German based jockey T Small will give assistance in the saddle.

#7 CIRILLA – phillipj3 – 13/1
The five year old daughter of Tapit had an off day last time out when ninth in the Grade II Grey Fox in Belgium over 13 furlongs. Prior to that run, she notched up two easy allowance victories over 12 furlongs in small fields. She will stay this distance but can be very inconsistant. Will need the run of her career to win her first graded event since her two year old days.

#8 HOLIDAE IN – beermug – 7/1
Beermug’s mare by Candy Ride ships into Sweden off the back of her best career run last time. The five year old held onto third place in the Grade III Girls Cap in Kansas after making all the running until headed a furlong out. She will need another career best to overturn the form with the winner that day, Galilei’s View, especially over this longer distance. The front running mare rarely finds enough in a finish and she weakened badly in her only previous attempt over 11 furlongs, which was last years’ running of this contest.

#9 THE HOOK – liam11 – 5/1
This stakes winner is another mare to run behind Galilei’s View last time. The five year old kept on for fourth place again in only her second graded race attempt after finishing fourth in another Grade III over 10 furlongs the time before. The 116 speed figure she posted in her stakes win three runs back is fast enough to enable her to be involved in a minor capacity here.

#10 VOICE OF REBELLION – francua4 – 18/1
The four year old daughter of Distorted Humor could be an improver in the field. She is only having her ninth career start and is entitled to run better than her odds suggest. After a couple of easy 12 furlong allowance wins, she led every inch of the way in her first stakes run last time to win easing down at the line. She looked better than the 105 speed figure gained and may stay even further. She could play a part in the finish if she gets to lead, though that is not guaranteed in this higher class field.

#11 GALILEI’S VIEW – mamaseals – 9/2
Looking for her ninth career win and second graded win is mamaseal’s Galileo mare. She beat three of her rivals here when finishing fastest of all to claim the Grade III Girls Cap last time out. A similar run will see her go very close here as the extra furlong should not be a problem judged on a previous mile and half stakes win. Top Italian based jockey N Labreche flies in for the ride.
