Although a full 14 horse field has come together, this projects to be a three to four horse race. Co-Favourite MILITARIZATION comes in as the #1 ranked dirt runner early in the 2yo campaign coming off a graded victory at the ‘ Vermont BB Juvenile’ to leap out to a three race undefeated start to its career. Of the many entrants only three look to have the speed to challenge MILITARIZATION: JUSTIFIED STORM, ONCE WAS ENOUGH, and SLEW SUPER JOHN.

The early lead projects to be highly contested, having six in the field who have averaged starts within 1/8th of a length from the lead and all will be making their push for a wire to wire outing. Of these six, co-favourite JUSTIFIED STORM has pulled ahead early and never let up in two strong victories. JUSTIFIED STORM is my pick to take the holeshot, however there will be a lot of pressure coming from the other favourites and it will take a big step forward for JUSTIFIED STORM to hold on to the wire.

SLEW SUPER JOHN is another expected to make an early push, and has taken the lead out of the gate in two of three career starts. There would be little surprise if SLEW SUPER JOHN took the holeshot, however this colt has proven successful stalking a half length off the lead, and with so much early speed in the field that may end up being the best move for SLEW SUPER JOHN to have its best shot at success. Either way I would expect SLEW SUPER JOHN and JUSTIFIED STORM to fight tooth and nail from wire to wire.

With all the pressure up front, the top ranked 2yo MILITARIZATION is expected to hold back a few lengths in hopes that the leaders tire themselves out by the stretch. MILITARIZATION has come from as far as four lengths back to win in prior runs, however with the quality of the favoured front running duo jockey T Small will need to be careful when balancing conserving energy while remaining in striking distance as both front-runners have proved more than willing to keep stretching out the lead through the stretch if allowed.

The final of the favoured four is ONCE WAS ENOUGH, who will be expected to sit back and watch the race unfold from the back, having sat at the back of the field in all three career starts at the 2nd call. In all three starts ONCE WAS ENOUGH has been able to close out strong, pulling away to 3/4 to a length from the second place runners. ONCE WAS ENOUGH will need to be careful not to sit too far back as the projected leaders are likely to put up a much stronger push down the stretch than what has been seen in prior runs.

All in all this should be an exiting race to watch from wire to wire with a strong contender running in all race styles, expect to see this one come down to the wire, be warned not to put too much focus on the battle up front between JUSTIFIED STORM and SLEW SUPER JOHN as you might just risk miss an epic stretch drive from MILITARIZATION and ONCE WAS ENOUGH.

Kegger’s Predictions

Holeshot: JUSTIFIED STORM (9/2)

Favourite: MILITARIZATION (9/2)

Longshot: ONCE WAS ENOUGH (9/1)
