This is a big weekend of racing for many horses and owners. Many prepare for the Sand Castle races while others continue their bid to make it to the Bluegrass Derby. This week I will be bringing you the preview of the South Australian Cup in Victoria where a full field of fourteen horses will be traveling a grueling 16 furlongs across the Firm Turf. These horses will be seeking to get to the winners circle in this G1 event to get their picture taken and put a new Cup in the trophy case for their owner. The morning line has been set by the odds makers and the owners have made the random pull to draw for their post positions. Let us now take a preview of this field of very nice looking horses that will take to the turf on Saturday in the G1, South Australian Cup.
Post Position: 1
Horse/Odds: Dubai Cameo 11/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (CAMELOT (GB) x DUBAI MILLENNIUM x DANEHILL)
Jockey: P Boyd
This G2 wining Bay Horse found that accolade back in September of last year when he got up in the G2, the Don’s Plastered Cup at a distance of 16 furlongs of which he hit a top speed rating of 114. He has run two races since that time and has failed to hit the boards. He will be going out to rebound coming off his last two outings of which he was met with disappointment. His last trip to the track was on 01/25/2020 in New Zealand when he traveled 16 furlongs in the G2, Fitness Cup. He finished with a 105 speed and crossed the wire in fifth, way back. Jockey, P Boyd who is a local jockey here in Victoria will be in the saddle for this race and will lead his horse out to their post representing the Elite Racing Club.
Post Position: 2
Horse/Odds: Magnificent Cadet 7/1
Sire: Cape Cross
Jockey: P Jetter
This six year old Bay Mare is out of Hall Of Fame mare, Magniforma. She is no stranger to the boys and has stepped on the track in the past to take them on. She does seem to have her best performances running against other fillies and mares, but she is a worthy contender in this field. She last ran on 01/26/2020 going 13 furlongs in the G3, She Loves Stakes But Hates Graded Stakes in Arkansas. She got up for third in that race when she began to fade after the third call. She will have the services of jockey, P Jetter from Ireland coming in to take the ride. They will be headed to a favorable post representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 3
Horse/Odds: Fen’Harel 5/1
Jockey: E Banner
The owner of this five year old Brown Mare shows he has no reservations bringing out this horse to run against the boys. Her last two trips to the turf she has faced the boys and showed great efforts and results. Her last three races she has shown up the bridesmaid at the wire coming in second and she looks hungry to get her day at the winners circle in a Graded event. Her last outing was on 02/20/2020 in New Zealand when she traveled 16 furlongs in the G1, Ackland Cup. She made a good closing move just prior to the third call and moved up from 10 ½ lengths back to cross the wire in second that day with a nice 112 speed rating. Jockey, E Banner from California will be flying in to take the ride with the mare. He will lead her out at post time on Saturday to represent the GR Simsters residency.
Post Position: 4
Horse/Odds: Heaven’s Devil 16/1
Sire: Heart’s Cry
Jockey: B Wu
This four year old Bay Gelding will step out to the track on Saturday in his first Graded attempt and is taking on 16 furlongs for the first time. He is coming off two wins this season with his last outing coming on 02/16/2020 in Arizona when he went 14 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, the Minesweeper Turf Special. He went gate to wire in that race to get up by over four lengths with a 112 speed rating. He comes in from Arizona to race here in Victoria which brings me a small concern for this horse who has not show his best in the past after a long travel. His owner does call in veteran jockey, B Wu from Paris to take the ride with his horse. They will be seeking to keep on this horses winning ways as he takes a big jump in Class representing the East-West Connection residency.
Post Position: 5
Horse/Odds: Nectaris Basin 8/1
Sire: Declaration Of War
Jockey: B Edwards
This prior G2 winning Bay Horse has been doing well as of recent in Allowance races and will be moving back up in Class to challenge this field. His last trip out was in Surrey on 02/25/2020 going 14 furlongs in a $52,500 Allowance. He crossed the wire in second just missing by ¼ length. His last Graded attempt came back in September of last year in the G1, Longchamp Marathon of which he failed to perform. He looks to redeem himself on the Graded circuit in this start on Saturday with jockey, B Edwards who is a local jockey here in Victoria. They will head out in the post parade representing the All-Stars Racing residency.
Post Position: 6
Horse/Odds: Outback Barricade 14/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (MALIBU MOON x MONSUN x ROBERTO)
Jockey: A Scott
This five year old Brown Horse was met with disappointment when he ran in Japan in the G3, The Diamond Stakes going a distance of 16 furlongs. He grabbed the lead at the third call of which he could not hold and fell back to fifth when he crossed the wire. He likes running at or close to the front in his best outings and that is where jockey, A Scott from Minnesota will try to place his horse. This horse transitioned from running on dirt over to the turf back in March of last year and he took well to the change. This horse has shown he can travel this long distance of 16 furlongs before and should be comfortable running this distance on Saturday when they head out to their gate representing the Midas residency.
Post Position: 7
Horse/Odds: St Leger Star 20/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (DALAKHANI x PLATINI x KEY OF LUCK)
Jockey: A Reed
This six year old Roan Horse has shown some difficulties in racing at the Stakes levels in his outings, but has been doing well at the Allowance level. He needs a jolt of electricity in the legs when he takes to the turf on Saturday. His most recent trip to the track came in Japan on 02/15/2020 when he traveled 16 furlongs in the G3, The Diamond Stakes. He stumbled out of the gate and lingered across the wire over 32 lengths back. His owner is looking to find a better performance out of his horse in this race and will be watching him closely. The owner makes the call to Ireland to contract with jockey, A Reed to take to the irons with his horse. They will head out together at post time to represent Universal Racing Club residency.
Post Position: 8
Horse/Odds: Darkquick 15/1
Sire: Global View
Jockey: R Whisper
This four year old Bay Colt last stepped out on the track on 02/15/2020 going 16 furlongs in Japan in the G3, The Diamond Stakes. He made a good move to get up to hit the boards when he crossed the wire in third with a 107 speed. This prior G2 winner continues to seek a G1 win and will attempt to do just that here in Victoria. A call has been made to jockey, R Whisper from Surrey to fly in for the ride up top. The jockey will be trying to get all the extra he can out of his closing horse and keep him in a competitive position. This pairing will head out to their gate at post time to represent the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 9
Horse/Odds: Road To The Stars 6/1
Jockey: P Munoz
This five year old Bay Colt is a EOY award winning horse out of Hall Of Fame mare, Starling Road. This colt gets a wink from the odds makers in their morning line making him their second choice in the field. However, I have to note that this horse has had his struggles as of late and not hit the boards since last November and has not seen a trip to the winners circle since November of 2018. He last ran on 02/20/2020 in New Zealand when he went 16 furlongs in the G1, Ackland Cup of which he had disappointing experience when he crossed the wire in 8th and was over 14 lengths off. His owner puts in the call to jockey, P Munoz to fly in from Illinois to take the trip with his horse as they go out on Saturday to represent the East-West Connection residency.
Post Position: 10
Horse/Odds: Yumali 8/1
Jockey: C Alexander
This five year old Bay Horse is a prior G3 winner in search of another Graded win. He last ran on 01/04/2020 in the Czech Republic in a Listed Stakes, the Galileo Gold Turf Challenge where he pulled in second at the wire after making a nice closing charge after the third call. A nice start to his 2020 season of which he seeks to continue here in Victoria. He has shown he can handle the distance but he may need to find some extra fire in his legs when he attempts to make his big closing charge for the wire. Jockey, C Alexander from New South Wales gets the call to come in to take the mount. This pairing will go out to the turf at post time to represent East-West Connection residency.
Post Position: 11
Horse/Odds: Orbambo 7/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (ORB x MONTJEU x KINGMAMBO)
Jockey: M Jolly
This five year old Bay Colt has been performing well since February 2019 of which he has not missed the boards since that time and has picked up five wins during that duration. His last trip to the track came on 20/29/2020 when he ran in New Zealand in the G1, Ackland Cup. He was leading the field throughout but was caught late giving up a big lead at the third call. He still got up for third that day. His owner places the call to get the services of jockey, M Jolly from out of Vermont to come in to take to the irons. The jockey has a lot of horse to work with and I look for him to take this horse upfront where he runs most comfortable. The deep closer should prepare to make chase. Horse and jockey will make their way to the turf surface on Saturday representing The Minnesota Testbarn Residency.
Post Position: 12
Horse/Odds: Bustem Hardhat 11/1
Sire: Medaglia D’Oro
Jockey: J Drozd
This prior G1 winning five year old Light Grey Horse had a nice trip his last time out when he ran on 02/22/2020 in the Czech Republic in a $45,000 Allowance race going 16 furlongs. He went gate to wire in that race to pick up a win by over 4 lengths. That was his second nice Allowance win in a row. But he is jumping back up in Class for this race and in his last G1 adventure he failed to hold his own and took a brutal loss which was in November of last year. He will get jockey, J Drozd from Kansas coming in to get back in the saddle of this horse of which he has some prior experience. This horse likes running at or near the front and he will have to weave through traffic from this post position to get there. He is a quick starter and has raced well from outside posts in the past. They will go out to represent the All-Stars Racing residency.
Post Position: 13
Horse/Odds: Technomoto 13/1
Jockey: B Oston
Jockey, B Oston from Massachusetts who rode this horse in his last outing will again get the call to take to the saddle up top for this race. He rode this five year old Brown Horse to a disappointing finish in their last outing which came on 12/21/2019 when they went 13 furlongs together in the G1, The Winter Cup in Japan. They crossed the wire in eighth that day and were well back when they crossed the wire. This horse can go the distance and showed that when he won going 16 furlongs in the G2, New Zealand Drinking Device Stakes where he closed for a big five length win. He will need to step it up and dig in for some redemption from that last race to grab his spot on the boards when they go out on Saturday to represent the GR Simsters residency.
Post Position: 14
Horse/Odds: Sea The Indian 20/1
Sire: Sea The Moon
Jockey: A Craig
The odds makers show no love for this prior GP badge earner as they make him one of the longer choices in the field in their morning line. This four year old Bay Colt has had his struggles and has failed to hit the boards since September of last year when he hit the wire in third in the G2, The O’Neal Stakes, but was notably nine lengths back in that third place effort. He will have jockey, A Craig from Newmarket in the saddle for the ride in this race. The jockey will have his work cut out for him in this race to get this horse to perform from this unfavorable outside post draw. They will be headed out together to their post representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Good luck to all owners and horses!
Skippy’s Watch List
Orbambo: I think you have to have this horse on your tickets. He is a regular at the winners circle and on the boards.
Fen’Harel: This mare looks hungry for a win against the boys and she might get it.
Technomoto: First start of the season. Let’s see what he’s got.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Heaven’s Devil: He has been impressive in his last two outings. The question is, can he take this jump in Class and go the distance. Let’s give him spot on some exotic tickets at the betting window and find out.
