Today I will be headed down to the sunshine of Florida where I hear the grapefruits are in full season right now and ready for the picking. But I will not be there just for the grapefruit, but will be spending most of my time at the track in Florida to check out the running of the G1, The Jai Alai Park Turf for four year old and older horses. This field of thirteen horses looks to be a very competitive field of horses, all of which will be coming in well decorated and sporting their prior accolades. The track will be listed as Firm Turf and the field will be traveling a distance of 11 furlongs as they all try to find the wire first and a trip to the winners circle. The odds makers have reviewed the field and set their morning line. Post positions have been drawn by the owners and they are making finial preparations with their jockeys and horses over at the barns. So let us take a preview of how this field of marathoners stack up for this running of the G1, The Jai Alai Park Turf.
Post Position: 1
Sire: English Channel
Horse/Odds: Inspired By Paine 11/1
Jockey: T Kelly
This six year old Bay Gelding has been running during the 2019 season in various Class races from Claimers to Graded starts. He won a Listed Stakes, the Resurgence Duece Truf Stayer back in October of last year at a distance of 13 furlongs when he took over after the third call in Arkansas. His last trip to the track was on 12/15/2019 going 12 furlongs in Florida in the G2, At Night Cap Stakes where he found much disappointment when he crossed the wire a distant eleventh in that race. This stakes winning gelding will get the services of jockey, T Kelly from Pennsylvania to take this trip with him here in Florida when they head out to their post representing the Blazing Saddles residency.
Post Position: 2
Horse/Odds: Possible CEO 15/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (SEA THE STARS x KINGMAMBO x NIJINSKY 2ND)
Jockey: S L Ledwith
This six year old Bay Horse ran many races in 2018 and 2019. He has been running on turf since going out to the track in August of last season. He has shown some success with this surface witch includes picking up an Allowance win in August of last year in Deauville and then came back next in October of last season to go 12 furlongs in the G1, The Jockey’s Weapon of which he crossed the wire in third. His last outing of the season then came on 12/21/2019 going 13 furlongs in Thailand in a Listed Stakes, the K’s Okkasion Turf Stayer. He showed up a disappointing fifth in that race and was 10 lengths back when he crossed the wire. Jockey, S L Ledwith from Dubai gets the call to fly in for the ride up top of this horse when they make way to their gate representing the Hispano Parlante residency.
Post Position: 3
Horse/Odds: Rockbone Castle 15/1
Sire: Scratch Bred (CAMELOT (GB) x KRIS S. x SHARPEN UP)
Jockey: GD Mate
In this four year old Bay Colts last trip to the track he earned his G1 badge in China on 11/17/2019 going 11 furlongs in the G1, The Singapore Cup. He had no issue going gate to wire in that race just as he did on 10/12/2019 in Paris in an Allowance outing. His owner has contracted with jockey, GD Mate once again to take to the irons, who is the same jockey who rode this colt to that nice G1 win in China. They will be making a long trip to get here in Florida which does bring me a little concern. This horse has fared well at this distance in his last two trips to the track. He likes to get up front and lead the way in his best outings. He draws a favorable gate for his running style and will make way to the turf representing the Midas residency.
Post Position: 4
Horse/Odds: Encosta De Raven 8/1
Sire: Raven’s Pass
Jockey: Z Ayya
This five year old Bay Horse is a G2 badge earner and on 09/30/2019 in Paris got up for a gate to wire win in the G2, Euro Grand Prix stakes where he held on to win by ½ length with a nice 117 speed rating in that race. He then made a start to round out his season on 11/02/19 in the G1, The Fall Tent Show when he failed to perform against that field and showed up a disappointing eight at the wire. His last trip to the track came in Ireland in a 9 furlong Local Championship Stakes where he faded back after the third call to sixth. He comes out to try and redeem himself and find another good performance with jockey, Z Ayya from New York up in the saddle when they head out to their gate come Saturday.
Post Position: 5
Horse/Odds: Darparkle 12/1
Jockey: A Craig
This four year old Chestnut Colt will be headed out to his gate come Saturday after picking up a nice G3 win in his last outing which came on 12/15/2019 in New Zealand when he traveled 11 furlongs in the G3, Manatee Cup. He put up a respectable 118 speed rating in that race. This horse has made steady improvements in his speed ratings but we will have to see how he does as he moves back up in Class and as he makes his first outing as a four year old. His owner has placed a call to Newmarket to fly in jockey, A Craig to take the ride again with his horse. The owner has also expressed his excitement for his horse and is in high hopes of a breakout four year old season. The pairing of this jockey and colt came last year in the Vermont Is 4 Lovers Stakes of which they finished fifth. They will be heading out to their post at race time to represent the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 6
Horse/Odds: Time And Peace 91/1
Sire: Brian’s Time
Jockey: B Doherty
Jockey, B Doherty from India gets the call and the contract to ride up top of this seven year old Bay Gelding who will be the patriarch of this field. He has been racing in various levels and Classes during his 2019 season including some Hot Races. But he came out in his last trip to the track on 10/06/2019 where he ran in Kentucky going 12 furlongs in the G3. The Sick No More Stakes of which he hit a triple digit speed rating for the first time with a 102 in that race. He showed up at the wire in third to gather his GP badge. He led the field in that race and had a 2 ¾ length lead at the third call, but he got caught late to lose by 5 ¼ lengths. He will go off as the longest choice in the field according to the morning line. Perhaps a reduction in distance from his last couple of races and a seasoned jockey with a stiff whip will get him into position to be competitive against this field. They will be heading out at post time to represent the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 7
Horse/Odds: Horses And Scotch 8/1
Sire: Fastnet Rock
Jockey: A Jolly
This five year old Bay Horse had a nice four year old season in 2019. He took to the track to run six races and only failed to hit the boards one time. That came in his last race of the season when he took a jump in Class to run in the G1, The Singapore Cup in China on 11/17/2019. He came back to run in Dubai on 01/10/2020 which was his first race of this 2020 season and he put down a nice run at 12 furlongs in a $75,000 Allowance of which he ran a nice 112 speed to capture the win. He will have a familiar jockey in A Jolly from Louisiana that will be in the saddle to take this trip with him here in Florida. They will pair together and make way to their post position representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 8
Horse/Odds: Frosted Trix 6/1
Jockey: D Givins
The owner of this G3 winning five year old Roan Gelding has called upon the services of jockey, D Givins in many of this horses outings in his career. D Givens will get the call again on Saturday to fly in from Kentucky to take the ride once again. This horse seems to be itching for a G1 win to add to his collection of accolades. He has made several attempts at this level of competition, but seems to fall off late in his 12 furlong efforts. Perhaps this small step down in distance will be what it takes for him to make it to the wire first and get that trip to the winners circle for a photo session. A horse to watch in this race as he may get up to hit the boards again in this race when they head out in the post parade to represent the Universal Racing Club residency.
Post Position: 9
Horse/Odds: Faking The News 19/1
Jockey: MJ Kelly
This five year old Bay Gelding will be headed to the post after some nice results racing in Listed Stakes races during his 2019 season. He got up with a nice closing effort on 10/19/2019 in a Listed Stakes in Wyoming and closed nicely to win the Friendofthefamily Turf Endurance at a distance of 13 furlongs. His last trip to the track came on 12/22/2019 in Lousisiana in the Dales Hollandia Turf Stayer of which he came in third, but was over 11 lengths back at the wire. The distance seemed to not favor him. But he heads back down for this 11 furlong attempt here in Florida, but brings some concerns for me in this race. He has jockey, MJ Kelly from out of Delaware who will be in the saddle and he is taking a big jump in Class. These concerns where shared by the odds makers in the morning line. Another concern is speed ratings for this horse that is just nipping into triple digits in his most recent outings. He will have several obstacles to overcome in this race when he heads to his post representing the Blazing Saddles residency.
Post Position: 10
Horse/Odds: Just A War Away 17/1
Sire: Just A Way
Jockey: K Friar
This 4 year old Brown Colt ran on the turf one time in his 2019 season and it was pretty lack luster when he went 9 furlongs back in October in New York in the G2, The Usain Bolt Stakes. He was rode that day by jockey, K Friar from Minnesota in that race who is a very familiar jockey to this horse and owner and he will be the jockey up top in the saddle for this race on Saturday. This horse has shown some very nice efforts on the dirt, but this switch back to turf does bring to me a concern. He last ran on 01/18/2019 in Ohio in the G2, The Buckeye Stayer when he traveled 16 furlongs and lost his lead of over 10 lengths to come in second and was 4 ½ lengths back at the wire. This step back down to 11 furlongs may be what he needs, but the surface I feel could cause him issues when they head out to the track to represent The Minnesota Testbarn Residency.
Post Position: 11
Horse/Odds: Swilcan Burn 7/2
Jockey: H Harzheim
Our morning line favorite according to the odds makers will be this 6 year old Bay Horse out of the HOF mare, Botwisted. This horse only missed the boards one time in nine starts in his 2019 season. His last trip to the track came on 12/08/2019 at a distance of 10 furlongs in Hong Kong in the G1, King Kong Cup where he came in second with a nice 121 speed rating losing to the EOY Award winning Mr. Mayhem. This horse has proven to be a top contender in this division but the question will be, when he heads out to the track for his first start as a six year old, will he have what it takes in his 2020 season? He is looking good over at the stables and will have a favorite jockey taking the ride with him again in H Harzheim from Dubai. A definite horse to watch in this race as he hits the turf representing the Empire State Racing residency.
Post Position: 12
Horse/Odds: Fifteen Dead 5/1
Sire: New Approach
Jockey: N Lawton
This five year old Chestnut Horse found a nice breakout season in 2019 chalking up five wins and earning his G2 badge in the process. He is coming off two straight wins and will be seeking his third in a row here in Florida when he takes to the turf on Saturday. He ran on 11/03/2019 in New York in the G2, Flying Carpet Handicap when he came from just of the leaders to surge to a big win by 3 ½ lengths over his nearest rival. Jockey, N Lawton from New York was in the saddle and will be riding with him again for this trip in Florida. A definite horse to keep an eye out for coming just off the pace if his jockey can get him into position from this post draw. They will be making their way out to the post representing the GR Simsters residency for the Givens Master Stables who brings into the mix his third entry for this race.
Post Position: 13
Horse/Odds: Courtyard LV 10/1
Jockey: M Zeus
This five year old Bay Gelding is coming off a rough and tumble 2019 season of which he had a few shining moments and met with some very hard disappointments. He did end his 2019 season with a good run in China on 11/17/2019 in the G1, The Singapore Cup which he placed third after he fired to make a late closing charge. He ran a 111 speed that day and his jockey, M Zeus from Spain will need to bring a heavy hand to get this horse to fire with some extra bounce in his step for a big close in this race. I do not feel this outside post draw will be an issue and the rabbits in this race up front could help him. This is a horse not to be discounted when they make their big close for the wire when they head out to represent the Only Stayers residency.
Good luck to all owners and horses!
Skippy’s Watch List
Swilcan Burn: I have a concern with his post in this race but he should be in the mix.
Frosted Trix: I think he will like the distance and show up to challenge.
Darsparkle: Looks game here for his first run as a four year old contender.
Tarton’s Long Shot
Courtyard LV: He will need to show up with a nice trip in this race going off at 10/1 in the morning line. This horse just may have a shot to upset some of his competition in this race. I will give him the call today to get on some of my exotic tickets at the betting window.
