Four Fillies Flying Fast!
The MORE OF THE GINNY Memorial Stakes
Six and one half furlongs on Firm Turf
$55,000
Fillies and mares, 2 years old
We are in South Korea this week for the More of the Ginny Memorial It is named after More of the Ginny, a stakes winning sprinter. We’ve got a nicely matched field though there are only four horses entered. Let’s take a look:
#1 OJAI HIGH trainer – ojai, ( 2/1), Jockey – F. Horning (10%), Avg Sp # (77.0)
So we found out for sure last time that this High Yield filly out of Ojai Surprise does NOT like running on the dirt. She is a grassy lady for sure and could be a good one. In her three turf races, all stakes including a grade one, she has two wins and a second in the G1. She likes this distance and generally stays within yelling distance of the lead. She is ranked number three in turf sprinters for two year olds and is a force to be reckoned with in this race.
#2 SPINNING STORM trainer – jetster, (8/5), Jockey – Z. Graves (18%), Avg Sp # (N/A)
Morning Line favorite Spinning Storm is a Storm Cat out of Cozzene’s World filly that has two wins in four races but has never run on the grass before. Her two wins did not come in her two stakes races where she did not fare as well. She has never broken a 70 speed figure and it is hard to understand exactly why she is the favorite here. Nice breeding but the experience is lacking a bit.
#3 ALMOST AN ANGEL(FR) trainer – skunkieluv, ( 7/2), Jockey – V.Porter (10%), Avg Sp # (70.0)
Ange Gabriel offspring and grey fillies have a soft spot in my heart so this lady qualifies. She has run 6 races and has improved in the last three, all at seven furlongs. Two were stakes and she had a second and a third. She should be right on Ojai High’s shoulder throughout the race but I don’t know if she has quite enough to overtake her in the stretch. Run the right race and she will be in the top three.
#4 CHERYLN BG trainer – theboz, ( 2/1), Jockey – K. Hellestrae (27%), Avg Sp # (72.7)
This little Cahill Road filly was claimed two back for $20,000 and immediately ran her best time ever by a wide margin for new trainer theboz. He must be doing something right as she had never shown the ability to run like that previously. Now she has thrown the best speed figure by far in this bunch and made this race tougher to handicap. She also has the tracks top jockey in the stirrups with K Hellestrae and he knows how to get the most out of any young horse. This all points to a good situation for theboz.
Morning Line = 2-1-4-3
Yoss Tipsheet = 4-2-3-1
Paz Picks = 4-1-3-2
A fairly even race, I like ALMOST AN ANGEL to finish third by a bit over SPINNING STORM who needs to get a turf race under her belt. OJAI HIGH may be the horse to beat but CHERYLN BG just seems to have everything going for her in this race. If she runs to her potential, I think she wins easily.
Good luck to all runners!
