Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Turf GI
Welcome to the bluegrass of Kentucky for the much anticipated yearly running of the Breeders’ Bowl Juvenile Turf Grade I One mile Firm Turf $1,000,000 All horses, 2 years old . A field of fourteen runners go to the wire and picking a winner will be hard. The favourite is at 7/1 and the outsider if you could call it that is 13/1. I am pleased that many of my friends have runners in this race. Lets take a look at the runners here.
1 72019 GANGLEY CAT(KY) undulation D Givins 12/1
Old Dominion Farms trained Light Grey Colt by ARTIE SCHILLER from FLORIDA CAT. He has raced 5 times winning four and $198,840 in earnings. Showed little first up to suggest a bowl run when 7th over 6f in a residency allowance race. Given 6 weeks break, he rewarded his trainer by winning a msw 6f in a much improved 76sp then on to Alw-15300NW2L 7f for another win in an 84sp it was then his trainer knew this horse had something special. Next up it was a stakes race in The DAPHNE TOO Stakes 7.5f 81sp coming from just off the pace to win in great style. Last time out won The Royal Dodge-G2 8f 96sp. Improving with every run and will race just behind pace.
His trainer said ”Gangley Cat started out in the Minnesota vs. Comedy Central 2yo race competition and didn’t do well. With the 20 horse field he got caught up in traffic and had rough luck trying to clear for the finish. Next time out was a MSW where he went gate to wire with no contest and was sharp for the race. The following race was an allowance stretching to a 7 furlong just six weeks later at only RTG and he won improving his speed. Then entered in a 7.5f stakes race, the Daphne TOO stakes and again never coming up sharp but only RTG. Realizing that the only way my horse might make it to the big show is by winning a graded stakes I entered Gangley Cat in the Royal Dodge G2 race and again, only RTG, never sharp. He ran down Blistering Wind who is entered in this week’s race. He did come up sharp last week(4484) which was nice to see but is now only RTG(4491). I’m not worried about whether he’s sharp or RTG at this point. With or without a clean ride this one is going to be hard to beat. There’s a new monster on the loose and his name is Gangley Cat.”
2 31934 SUNSHINE SUPERSTAR(IRE) siriusflit F Gossett 12/1
A good friend Next Bonus Racing trained Brown Colt by DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) from SUNSHINE SUPERCAT(KY) he has raced 4 times for 3 wins and placing $141,720. Won first up msw 6f 73sp storming home from well back it was then on to The COLONEL EARL(NZ) Challenge-Stk in Queensland over 7f leading all the way 77sp in third start won Premie Champion Stakes-G3 8f 79sp and last time out was a nice 2nd The Les Paul-G3 8f 91sp looks a natural leader from a handy draw. I spoke to his trainer and he said ”The unique thing about him is that he’s a 4th generation SIM horse tracing back to foundation mare Deep Run Frosty.
“As far as his racing career goes, he tries hard every time and is razor sharp for this engagement. I expect a big effort on Saturday.”
3 78374 LONLON(SAF) acarigua B Rocker 12/1
A great supporter of Queensland racing Acarigua Stables trains this Brown Colt by WESTERN WINTER x LOMOND x STORM BIRD he has raced 5 times for 2 wins and 2 placings $155,710 in earnings won a msw over 7f second up 77sp then a nice 3rd The A Bomb-G3 7f 84sp then won The Baby King Stakes-G3 8f 89sp running on from the back and last time out ran 3rd Grand Critter Stakes-G2 8f 93sp. Really strong runner who must be considered again. I spoke to his trainer at the track he said ”No idea if he will get in or not he is by a long way the best runner I have ever had. Still very early in his career but he looks to be getting better. Hasn’t had a big enough break since his last race but will run him here anyway if he is lucky enough to get in. Named from his Dam Sire Lomond – play on words – LonLon.”
4 39229 ADJUGE(KY) har G Arnold 8/1
Rafa Stables trained Chestnut Colt by BERNARDINI from the multiple GW1 mare PUENTELARRA dam also of GW ZORAIDA(KY) 5 starts 4 wins and a place $2,022,000 in earnings already at 2yrs last three starts have produced 3rd The Railaway-G3 6f 81sp a win The Vintage-G2 7f 88sp and a win The Golden Shoe-G1 6f 94sp. Only question with this guy is the 8.5f he oozes class and if he gets the trip will be in the finish. Over this journey I would expect that he will lead or be in the first few all the way.
5 53079 GIZMOLINGTON(KY) skirom O A Haack 11/1
Skirom Stables trained Brown Colt by HARLINGTON from the GW mare NORTHERLY NICOLE this fellow has raced 7 times for 3 wins and $446,090 won second up over 7f in the St-Manatee Stakes 75sp ran second The Coventry Steaks-G2 6f 82sp then third The Champagne Mile-G2 8f 89sp last time out won Knick Knack Juvenile-G2 8f 91sp storming home from mid-field better suited by this longer races and will be suited by classic distance more than most. Trainer would hope his jockey drops back early and storm home.
6 967 DISTINGUISHED TED(FL) puddinpuss P McCarthy 9/1
Puddinpuss Stables trained this Florida bred Chestnut Colt by WITH DISTINCTION from LATIN NIGHT(KY) another who has had 7 races so far winning 3 and $301,480 in stakes won first up over 5.5 msw 70sp won The BRAD OTTENS Challenge-Stk 6.5f 85sp then second The Railaway-G3 6f 86sp 2nd Golden HandGrenade-G3 7f 84sp a win The Jimcrack-G2 6f 91sp last time out ran 3rd The Bedford Stakes-G2 8f 93sp bit of a question mark at the distance but ultra consistent and cant be underestimated.
7 145616 SAN JACINTO(KY) super13 D Evans 9/1
Simply……..SUPER! the boyz are in da house with this Brown Colt by the mighty GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) from IN THE AIR(KY) he has raced 6 times for 5 wins and $685,460 in earnings. I spoke to his trainer and he said ”San Jacinto was bred to be a champion, named after a Peter Gabriel song and missed being a perfect 6 for 6 by less than 2 lengths. He closed over 10 lengths in his last race and still managed to put up a high speed # in what was one of the fastest juvenile races of the year. Frankly I will be stunned if he doesn’t run big on Saturday.” And why wouldn’t he, his wins include the Salisbury Medallion-G3 6f 82sp The July Stakes-G2 6f 88sp and the Blue Diamond Road-G1 6f 85sp storm home from well back The Bedford Stakes-G2 8f 92sp for 4th . Got too far back last time and will needto race handier this week.
8 61672 SISMICO(KY) alfalvi H Harzheim 12/1
Alfalvi Stables trained Chestnut Colt by STREET SENSE from the SW mare EYE ON A DAY(LA) 7 starts for 5 wins and 2 places $601,310 well managed through allowance racing till he mature then swapped to graded racing for a 2nd The Firebird-G1 6f 89sp won the Circle Tower Stakes 6f 87sp last time out won The Middlepark Stakes-G1 6f 91sp definitely a sprint star and class is not a problem but unproven at the journey. Breeding would suggest he can run the distance. Will race behind the pace all the way.
9 25943 BLISTERING WIND(KY) drowsy T Small 9/1
Drowsy Stables trained Brown Colt by DYNAFORMER from LAUGHTER(KY) he has raced 5 times for 4 wins and $450,340 first up win msw 5f 71sp won Alw-46200NW2L second up 6f 75sp start three win three The STRONG WESTERLY Stakes 6.5f 80sp then a fourth win The More Nay-G1 6f 86sp ran well for 2nd at first try over ground in The Royal Dodge-G2 8f 96sp. Not far away last time out and another serious threat. On pace runner who will make sure the pace is a hot one. By the sire who produced the real life Melbourne Cup winner AMERICAIN.
10 124508 SATAN’S STORM(IRE) texasace N Lawton 13/1
LIVESTRONG Racing aka Texasace trained Brown Colt by CAPE CROSS (IRE) from the SW OZIK(IRE) 4 starts for 3 wins and 1 place $200,700 shown class throughout short career and last time won The Summertime-G3 8f 91sp proving he is ready at the right time to prosper. I spoke with his trainer he said ”I’m hoping that Satan’s Storm makes the race, he currently sits #19 in the rankings and we’ll just have to wait for the draw this week to see if he makes the field.
“Comes into the race off an impressive score in the GIII Summertime. Looks all the part of a miler and I don’t think it will matter whether he has the lead or just sits off the pace.
He’s been a pleasant surprise as a 2yo and I’m hoping he continues to train on leading up the classics next year at Newmarket and Epsom. Runs on the pace and should make the early rush very interesting.”
11 144941 MRS. IACOCCA(AUS) mares2010 R Whisper 11/1
Another mate from my URC days Smokeglack Stables trains this Brown Colt by top first season Australia star SEBRING (AUS) from TRANSGENIC(KY) 6 starts to date have produced 2 wins and 3 placings $175,500 in earnings first 2 starts in URC residency races produced only 2 wins but has raced in graded company since being placed on 3 occasions including 3rd The Coventry Steaks-G2 6f 82sp 2nd The Champagne Mile-G2 8f 92sp and 3rd Looking Forward Stakes-G3 8f 87sp. Still running on when only 6th last time out The Bedford Stakes-G2 8f 84sp. One of the few deep closers in this field he could dive bomb them all in stretch.
I spoke to his trainer he said ”Mrs. Iaccoca was a misnamed horse as u can see lol. Thought I had put Mr. for the male part, but guess not. Anyway, think he’ll do ok after last being a little sub par. Should be decent amount of speed for him to close at and hopefully he got bounce out of the way. I have won the BB Turf Juvy Filly before with Miesque’s Gold and would love to win the BBTurf Juvy Colt one.”
12 4071 BLAST OFFF(AUS) shaagger A Rolling 10/1
Shaghar Stables’Keeping the Dream Alive’ trained Brown Colt by another Australian first season sire doing well NORTHERN METEOR (AUS) x AGNES TACHYON (JPN) x FLYING SPUR(AUS) 5 starts to date for 3 wins and 2 seconds $318,505 in stakes. MSW 6f second up 77sp then won The Hero Stakes 7f 89sp then won The Future-G2 7f 90sp and last time out ran home well for 2nd The Bedford Stakes-G2 8f 93sp runs on well in his races and is improving at the right time of his career. As his name suggests, he is ready to enter the stratosphere. Couldnft see his trainer when at the track maybe he had had a big night but I think he would be pretty happy with his charge for this race.
13 806 ZUCCHINI(AUS) deyoto2 K Ledwith 9/1
Another great friend in the sim and fellow Hawthorn Hawks lover Champion Lodge aka deyoto (Rob) trains this Brown Colt by another Australian sire the champion racehorse LONHRO (AUS) x MONTJEU (IRE) x DANEHILL DANCER (IRE) he has started 5 times for 4 wins and 1 placed run $342,580 in earnings. Won a msw 5.5f first up 71sp the into stakes racing winning The BARB’S JAVA AGAIN Stakes 6.5f 86sp on to The Supermotive-G3 7f 81sp and another win two starts back ran 2nd The Jimcrack-G2 6f 88sp and to top it all off proved classic distance racing would be no problem winning The Bedford Stakes-G2 8f 94sp leading all the way in a super fast time. I spoke with Rob at the track he said ”I’ve got Zucchini in it this year. Huge chance, very very fast horse. Flies the gates and maintains pace over distance will give them something to chase for sure.
Have won this race before with Buck’s Party and ran a 2nd with Paycheck and I reckon this guy is better than both of those so pretty confident this weekend.”
14 153994 THE SEVEN SEAS(IRE) super1 P Harzheim 7/1
Last but definitely not least comes the favourite for this race trained by Simply……..SUPER! the second of their runners this one a Brown Colt by MONTJEU (IRE) from the GW he-mare DELPENN CHAMP(KY) he has started 7 times for 3 wins and 3 placings $435,870. Never far away in his races his recent form includes wins The Champagne Mile-G2 8f 93sp and Looking Forward Stakes-G3 8f 93sp only battled last time out when only 4th after leading in the Knick Knack Juvenile-G2 8f 87sp if he recaptures his earlier form will be the one to beat his trainer said ”The Seven Seas is beautifully bred and has been amazingly consistent all year. He really came alive once he was able to start going two turns and hasn’t really disappointed. He tired in the stretch in his last but I think it was a good learning experience for him to be tested early while contesting the pace. He is dead fit and sharp and expect him to run his race and let the chips fall.”
1ST THE SEVEN SEAS(IRE)
2ND SATAN’S STORM(IRE)
3RD ZUCCHINI(AUS)
Good luck to all and thanks to those who sent me their thoughts .
