No Classic but Plenty of Questions in Surrey
A disappointing turnout for THE CLASSIC TRIAL, a 10 furlong GR 3 event, which is a leadup to the spring Classics. The Surrey track should be bathed in sunshine and the turf should come up firm. And while the numbers and quality may be a little down there are some well bred youngsters who could be on the improve.
1. WILD RIVER RIDE(ENG) – takeall3 – D Aniel 7/1
A lightly raced son of Medicean who looks to be a real stayer. He always finishes off the race with gusto and his results have improved with a step up in trip. While his time figures are not outstanding it seems that he only does what is required and will give this a shake if those up front tire late.
2. MINOT(KY) – pirat – I Swanny 5/2
The switch to turf has energised this well bred son of Street Cry(IRE). Will race handy and try to hold on late. Last start was given an easy lead and showed good acceleration before getting a little tired however the start before showed that he can fight when pressured early.
3. DERBY WEEK PRAYER – pazsixx – R Whisper Even
The highest rated colt in the field this son of Distorted Humor goes off a short priced favourite. On paper he looks to be the one to beat but like me trainer pazsixx is a little concerned about a couple of the other less exposed types. Yesterday he told me “ Everyone knows what my fella can do and will be doing their all to beat us while there are a couple in the race who could see a massive improvement at this trip”. Tactically he will probably need to get some early cover as occasionally he can be found wanting late.
4. TRI TRI AGAIN(ENG) – mycaza – T Nugent 6/1
Another stoutly bred son of Medicean this colt has really stepped up to the mark now with the rise in distance. The worry for this one is that his beat runs have come in much weaker company and possibly prefers a bit of sting out of the track. Another on-pacer who may need to find a little more.
5. STARBRITE STYLE – thierry – R Harzheim 3/1
Once again Medicean is the sire of this consistent colt and he could be a real improver. Failed last time in a hot GP 2 race down under but this smaller field could suit. Should be able to get a trail behind a decent pace and storm home late.
CONCLUSION
When first scanning the card it would be easy to look straight to the 3 horse and say whatever beats him will win however I think this could be a tricky one for the favourite. This is generally the time some of these lightly raced types improve sharply with a rise in trip and 1 or 2 of them could do it here. My selection is the 5 who should get a good run just off the speed and have enough dash at the end to get his head in front.
