NOT FIRE NOT THEFT JUST A WIN

Grade III racing makes an appearance in Canada, the land of the maple leaf this weekend and more specifically Ontario, where the rocky cliffs and beautiful lakes provide a serene back drop to the hooves of thunder as the field in this years The Spur Of The Moment Grade III, a race for fillies and mares 4yo and up over the picture perfect 6 furlong dirt course at Ontario. Let’s check out the field of ten and how they match up.

1 – MAWALI(KY) – rioja – 7/2

(SPEIGHTSTOWN x RELAUNCH x NEVER BEND)

This 4yo filly is a  winner of 6 from 20 and just over half a million dollars in prizemoney who comes into this after a half length second in a stakes race over this distance last time out.  Has an uncanny knack of producing very high speed figures and boasts a recent second at Grade I level.  Is definitely a classy filly and right in this.

2 – GEORGIA PEACHES(KY) – trotter10 – 5/1

(DIXIE UNION x CARSON CITY x APALACHEE)

A lightly race 6yo mare who has won 11 from just 29 starts in her career. She is a dead set 6 furlong specialist running almost all of her races over this trip. She has won 3 and been placed in a further 3 of her past 8 starts, all at stakes level. Trainer  trotter’s prowess is renown sim-wide and must count fro something here. One of the top chances.

3 – HEADBOB(CAN) – lawnlover – 10/1

(BOLD EXECUTIVE x FORLI x CANONERO II)

An up and coming 4yo filly who is on the crest of a wave, winning 3 of her past four and not missing a top three finish in her past eight outings. She won last time out over this distance at stakes level and produced a handy speed figure of 103, if she can reproduce that you can expect to see her right in this. Should be midfield and whistling home.

4 – MAU MAU(KY) – stormborn – 4/1

(GIANT’S CAUSEWAY (IRE) x A.P. INDY x SADLER’S WELLS)

This regally bred 5yo mare is all class and has won an remarkable 11 from 24 races. The point that really stands out in her recent for was her win last time out over this trip at Grade II level. Before that run it may have a appeared she was a 7 furlong specialist competing well at the highest level for sometime, but the drop in distance seen her at her best producing a speed figure of 108. This girl is a top notch performer who will be flying home late in the race.

5 – BOUTIQUE(ENG) – topicount3 – 22/1

(GREEN DESERT x RED RANSOM x MR. PROSPECTOR)

This 4yo filly has performed solidly and won over this distance in a stakes event  back as a 3yo, she earned a go at this when she won last time out over 6 furlongs running an SP# of 107. Her form in the 3 races before that had been only fair and unless she can produce something astounding here, she may be out of her depth.

6 – LADY OF THE WOODS(KY) – becumming1 – 12/1

(FOREST WILDCAT x KINGMAMBO x IN REALITY)

This 4yo filly has shown sharp improvement of late to land 2 of her last 3 races all over this distance and all at allowance level.  She has produced speed figures in excess of 100 each time which is well beyond what she had been doing before that. She meets a hot field here and time will tell if she can take the next step. Prefer to see.

7 – HOUSE EDGE(KY) – vampire4 – 12/1

(SCAT DADDY x PRIVATE ACCOUNT x DANZIG)

This 4yo filly has only graduated to stakes racing at her past four starts and she has already managed to win 2 of those. She has won 5 of her 10 career starts and appears to be on the improve all the time. She comes up against some very experienced campaigners here and will need to find an extra leg when it counts to take this out.

8 – RUBY SLIPPER(KY) – toppers – 6/1

(A.P. INDY x GONE WEST x ALYDAR)

Yet another of the 4yo filly brigade in this race, she has won 2 of her last 5 all at stakes level and not missed a top 3 finish in any of those. Drops back a furlong and a half for this on her last two runs but has run well over the 6 furlongs in the past.  Jockey R. Heenan takes the ride and was quoted as saying he “wouldn’t swap her for any other horse in the race”

9 – NOT FIRE NOT THEFT(KY) – sender1 – 4/1

(EMPIRE MAKER x PIVOTAL(GB) x FORTY NINER)

With a name that resembles an insurance claim, this 5yo mare is definitely the genuine article. A winner of 8 from 27 she has won at this distance at both Grade I and Grade II levels. Her most recent win was two starts back over 6.5 furlongs at Grade III level. She has the ultra consistent B Renfoe on board and looks like she will be very hard to beat here. Top hope.

10 – ONEMORE QUEEN(IRE) – onemore – 13/1

(KALANISI (IRE) x KINGMAMBO x ALZAO)

Comes into this Grade III event after running her last eight races at allowance level.  This 4yo fill has saluted in three of those outings and has won six times in her career. The fact that she has not been dominating the easier races makes it hard to see her coming up trumps against the top line fillies and mares in this one. Rough place chance.

In a race that is oozing with female sprinting talent, anyone of six or seven horses are in with major chances and this promises to be a real spectacle for the Canadian crowd.
