Flying Tenaciously

You have to excuse twelve colts and a filly if they think they witnessed an unidentified flying object on Saturday in the Grade III Flying Saucer Stakes.  What they witnessed was Tenacious V, a filly trained by Peeps4, flying by two win going away.

The victory was reminiscent of her only other turf try, a rallying win at a route, where she was credited with the same speed figure of 88 as in this.  She paid $24.90, $11.40, and $7.30.

Jockey T LeVan allowed Tenacious V to settle in along the rail, falling back as far as eleventh and some nine lengths behind the leader before she began her rally, picking off horses around the final turn, and then veering out to take the lead early in the stretch.

The chestnut filly won going away and looked ready to go another furlong or two.

The eleventh choice in the mutuels moved up to a ranking of fifth in the world among two year old distance turfers.

Pit of Destruction tried to run away with the race, but jockey M Judge was unable to conserve enough horse and it was obvious the colt was done after four furlongs, and he faded to sixth.

The place and show horses, General Nustaritche and Trolley ran similar races and rallied, but they were no match for the winning filly.

The favorite, Storm Tapper, got caught wide around both turns and started his rally too late to be a factor.  He finished seventh.
