The Capote Storm Stakes

The CAPOTE STORM Stakes – $45,000

Fillies and Mares, 3 years old

A Mile and one sixteenth – Dirt Surface

Stakes Record Holder – (2008) Magic Lugey – 1:43 3/5

Welcome to Tennessee for the 4th running of the CAPOTE STORM Stakes.  This year’s event looks to be

A petty evenly matched field on paper with five competitive entrants hoping to add their names into the

Tennessee SIM history book.  One thing is for certain. At the conclusion of todays race one of these

Lucky ladies are going to find herself as a first time open stakes winner for her connections.

Today marks the 4th consecutive 8.5F race on the dirt for MEGATEX (ENG) which is a statistic that none of the other entrants in today’s race can claim. Even more telling than her recent races at this distance is the success that she has had, two allowance wins and a 5th place finish in the G1 Movieland Starlet at CA in week 3791. In that G1 event the top three finishers (Gorilla Monsun (GER), Railways (ENG), La Galerna (KY)) are all top 25 ranked 3 yo. female dirt classic route horses which makes Megatex’s (ENG) race that day all the more impressive. Her SPR numbers have also increased in each of those three recent races which indicates that she is on the improve and is a definite threat to score her first stakes victory today.

Post 2 brings us this fine racing daughter of War Eagle who has hit the board in six of her seven lifetime starts, the only non top 3 finish being the first race of her career when she was guided by a different trainer. HEARTSWIDEOPEN (LA) has ran her last four races at the mile dirt distance while racking up one win, two seconds and a third. Three of those races were in open stakes company including a race, two starts back, when she ran in The Creepy Prospector (FR) Stakes here at TN finishing behind the classy mare SIX OASIS (ENG) by 2 lengths. She has posted two consecutive 92 SPR at the mile distance and today’s slightly longer distance should not diminish her chances at all for a victory today.

GALILEO’S BRUSH (IRE), a half sister to the GP YUKON HOLLANDIA (IRE), enters today’s race racing for the first time beyond a 7F distance. She has been very competitive recently at shorter distances, ranging from 6-7F, scoring three consecutive top three finishes in her last three races in allowance and open stakes company. Last time out at MI in The Owners Bathing Memorial she ran 3rd four lengths back of the top 100 sprinting mare Waive Goodbye (KY) while posting an 82 SPR for the 6F distance on a track labeled as good. Today’s longer race distance should give her connections a good indication of her abilities against more seasoned female classic route distance runners.

Making her 5th consecutive start today in a classic route distance race MALEFICENT (KY) has posted two wins and two thirds out of four races at 8-8.5F distances. Two races back at KY, in an allowanceNW2L race, she went from ninth to first posting her best SPR at today’s race distance winning by 2 lengths. Her last race, and her first open stakes attempt in The Barb’s Alydar Memorial at Finland, she finished 3rd while continuing to show improving SPR against tougher competition. Her experience at or near today’s race distance, along with her ability to close well in the stretch, speaks highly for this daughter of Corinthian chances in today’s race.

Making her 3 yr. old debut today BAD BOY BOOGIE (KY) comes into today’s race after finishing up her campaign last year with a win at Connecticut in an ANW1x race. In that race, for the first time in her short career, she was able to grab the lead at C3 in the race and she never looked back winning the $26,000 race by 1 ¾ lengths. Another possibly telling statistic comes to light in regards to today’s race when reviewing her run in that race. Her SPR of 89 in that race is the second fastest figure posted by any of the five entrants in today’s race as a 2 yr. old, at a mile distance, only bettered by Heartswideopen (LA) who posted a 92 SPF at 8F as a 2 yr. old. She is another runner with a good chance at victory in a closely matched field.
