Cheers to Sangria!
Saturday’s feature, The Full Book Memorial, went the way of a very nice filly in the making. She goes by the name of Sangria, and this daughter of the Champion racehorse Galileo is well on her way to making a date with some better class races over the Spring and Summer months.
Jockey T.Cooper was able to settle her in lovely trailing position in the early stages behind what was a pretty sedate speed set by Disco Lemonaide. Josefina refused to drop her head outside the lead with lack of speed, and she eventually pulled herself into the ground before only beating one home, Preach, who failed to handle the surface. Cooper couldn’t hold Sangria any slower before the point of the turn, and he let her slide around them without effort. She quickly shook off Disco Lemonaide who offered no resistance, and it was left to Skipped A Beat to come from back in the field and be the only horse filly to stand between Sangria and daylight. The official margins were 2.5L x 3.5L, but had Cooper wanted, the margin could have been much greater. The time was a fair 1:37 2/5.
It’s understood Plainoxius, the fillies trainer, is looking at gearing the filly toward an Epsom Oaks start in the Spring. Whilst the filly couldn’t be rated a contender on her exposed form just yet, she has a lot of upside and the pedigree to match. The trainer has good reason to believe his charge can measure up given she remains basically unchallenged in her 2 starts, and I’m expecting to hear a lot more of this filly. The others were completely outclassed, and will struggle to be competitive in this grade on what they showed here Saturday.
