1 | 12/1 | EWC – The pyeman brings his scratch bred mare by Grand Slam into this race coming off three nice finishes on dirt. She’s accumulated two seconds and a win in short allowance fields. This is only her second try on turf. The mare is a very consistent runner; however she hasn’t as of yet won a stakes of any kind. She also is afflicted with the so-called “seconditis” bug which comes from racing over tracks that were built over used oil fields. J She may be in the mix in this for a period of time; but probably will be leaking oil at the end.
2 | ANGELS IN HEAVEN(KY) | 6/1 |
DelPenn – After 19 races on dirt and a fairly consistent racing career, I decided to chance this mare on the turf. To my surprise she responded way past my expectations. This will be her first graded event. With a career high SP107 in her last she may be due for a bounce. She’s also in an experimental plan that has been initiated in all my stables. She will be running at .94 effort. The odds may be deceiving.
3 | SAKE(KY) | 7/1 |
GR Simsters – 3yo Dynaformer scratch bred. Trainer feels it is time to test out the older mares again with this nice looking filly. She ran a decent 5th in the BB turf distaff last out and fell just a little short in a G1 against her own age two back. She has all the tools to make a very good showing here. We’ll just have to see if she’s matured enough. This filly will be one to be reckoned with in 2009.
4 | FEAR ME COMING(KY) | 14/1
5 | VINTAGE SMOKE(KY) | 15/1 |
Blazing Saddles – Yet another 3yo scratch bred filly, this one by Vindication. Big time win in her last; a G2 event at 9.5f, in which she blew away the competition in 111SP! That may have taken a bit out of her. We’ll have to see if such a charged effort will put the dampers on her for a race or two. Seeing as how she went through conditions nicely this past year, we’re looking to see a lot of this youngster in 2009.
6 | ACETELYNE(KY) | 64/1 |
DelPenn – A.P. Indy scratch bred filly that has had a disappointing career to date. Not so much as though she hasn’t won, but the fact that with her powerful blood she hasn’t to date shown she has the class to tackle an elite field. She’ll get a chance here to rectify that here. The longest shot in this; she must break the 100SP barrier to have any chance. Perhaps mixing a tank of oxygen would spark a flame J
7 | FLAMMEN SEHEN(GER) | 9/1 |
GR Simsters – Nice looking 3yo scratch bred filly by German standing Monsun. After two great G wins in which she smoked her rivals, she took the preverbal bounce in the BB. That was a shame as she may have done some damage in that big day. No use crying over spilt milk. Trainer is hopeful she will return to her previous form before that race. She’s another closer that will have speed to run at here.
8 | HAMSTER(JPN) | 5/1 |
Pastures – We’re talkin’ speed here! Co-favorite in this, the 3yo filly scratch bred by
9 | OCTOBER SNOW(KY) | 17/1 |
Bargain Bred – 4yo former claimer/starter type that won a listed stake back in August. She’s raced three times since, picking up minor checks in listed events. Seeing as she is the only progeny of
10 | CALLISTO OF CIRRA( | 10/1 |
Independent – Out of an “E” rated mare with three active progeny. This filly is the best of the bunch. She’s sired by Dubawi and has some distance bulk in the backlines. She matured nicely and just hit a high note in her last out with a 108SP. She placed in a G1 a few back; so the class is there to run with these. Likes to lay back some and may have an advantage over late closers if still in top form.
11 | GALE WARNING( | 40/1 | |||||
12 | KEPLER OF RAINBOW( | 8/1
13 | NORSE PRINCESS | 5/1 | |||||
14 | SOUTH OF HEAVEN( | 13/1
In a race that’s slated for 3yo and up, this one is loaded with youngsters. Seems like the breeding bug strikes earlier each year taking its toll on 5yo+ mares. Nothing really wrong with that, but it seems fame is short lived in today’s sim. We’re looking for the pace to last in this event.
