The Wishful Pedal Stks

A small field has been assembled for this weekends feature, The Wishful Pedal Stks. Although there are only 5 runners, it is an interesting event made even more interesting by the fact that the odds makers appear to have the market around the wrong way to my eye.

1- We Miss Al 3-2; The race favourite is trained by Deadwood6 and is one of 2 mares by outstanding sire Giant’s Causeway. This stakes winning mare has had a very good season campaigning in middle distance/staying events, and comes back in trip to the 9f for this event. From a punting perspective, I cant consider her a winning chance. She is well under the odds at 3-2 given her best form is over much further and I’m looking elsewhere for the winner.

2- Giant Silence 8-5; This 4yo Giant’s Causeway mare has the form to win this. She resumed from a 6mth spell with an outstanding 3rd in the Roys Park Bonanza. They ran the 8.5f in a very quick 1:41:1 that day, and this mare was able to record a 108 speed rating on that occassion. She was beaten by a genuine Group class mare there, and was able to beat home many well performed gallopers. She is an on-pacer who looks to have garnered improvement from her recent spell, and I find her very hard to oppose in this race.

3- Head On 6-1; 3yo daughter of Deep Impact that has won 5 from 12 with 6 minors in her short career to date. She stepped up to Stakes level for the 1st tim 2 runs back when recording a strong win against the older mares. She struck an off track last time out when disappointingly beaten into 4th of 7, but back on top of the ground here I expect her to improve noticably. Should make her presence felt.

4- Sunnybank Memories 9-2; We could wax lyrical all day about the famous dam of this horse, the all conquering Sunnybank Memorial. This daughter of the greatest turf horse the world has ever seen has progressed nicely to date, having recorded 5 wins and 5 minors from 16 starts. She is a stakes winner of her most recent outing, and has performed consistantly this season. Shows early pace, but will need to improve slightly to beat Giant Silence.

5- Idaho Spud 5-1; The outsider of the field is coming off a win here 3 weeks ago in a weak allowance race where she started a short priced favourite. Although she has won 11 races, only 5 have occurred in MCOS events and she would need to improve massively to beat these.

Giant Silence looks an absolute certainty here. She’s has returned from her spell in excellent order, and as long as she isnt ‘carved up’ in front by one of the other pace influences, she cant be beaten here in what is essentially a much easier race than the one she ran so well in last time out. Head On and Sunnybank would be my trifecta selections, and whilst the favourite has a class edge on most of these, I think the drop in trip will count against her here.
