Equinics – Mandaloun Cheaters Get Banned Stakes
Grade 1 Stakes – Purse $1,500,000
Restricted to 3+ Year Olds, Fillies and Mares
8 furlongs on Dirt

Today we are in Vermont for the 2024 EQUINICS and the running of the Mandaloun Cheaters Get Banned Stakes, an 8 furlong race on the dirt featuring some of the best female speed that SIM Owners/Trainers have to offer. This race features a field of fifteen competing for a purse of $1,500,000 and a place in EQUINICS history as one of the best of the best.

MANDALOUN is a bay colt who was foaled in 2018 in Kentucky and trained by Brad H. Cox. He is named for a mandaloun, “a type of mullioned (or decorative partition) window from traditional Lebanese architecture”.

He is famous for being awarded1st place in the 2021 Kentucky Derby after the disqualification of the original winner MEDINA SPIRIT. He followed that race with wins at both the Pegasus Stakes and Haskell Stakes. He also won the 2021 Risen Star Stakes, and the 2022 Louisiana Stakes.

Here is a closer look at the field:

Representing the Florida Racing Club is this scratch bred four year old AWESOME OF COURSE (x PIONEER OF THE NILE x FORESTRY) filly. Gleaming chestnut filly enters here off a fading 4th in a restricted allowance at 6.5 furlongs,  nabbing a 105 SP# after pressing the early pace.   One before that she tired to 6th in a restricted allowance at this distance,  notching a 104 SP# after making the early fractions.  In her prior engagement she couldn’t hold on when 4th in a restricted allowance at a mile,  nailing a 107 SP# after leading into the far turn.  Speedster from the ydracing operation should be part of the early pace struggle,  but looks in tough to hold on against these down the straight.

Representing Hoosier Racing is this four year old UNION RAGS filly out of the Sim Mare RAINING EMPEROR. She has finished in the money in just eight of her fifteen career races including three wins. She finished up her three year old season with a runner-up finish at the “G2 Barbacoa Handicap” and in her only start of this year she ran career best 113 speed in a runner-up finish at the eight and a half furlong “G1 Orange Blossom”. She comes in well rested and should like the distance here and will be one to watch as they come down the stretch.

Representing Orphan Racing is this five year old SHANGHAI BOBBY Mare out of the Sim Mare TAP N GO. Lovely light grey mare was an okay 5th last out in the G2 Star Athlete Handicap at 8.5 furlongs,  pasting a 110 SP# in a mid pack trip.  One before that she was a winner in an open allowance at 8.25 panels,  pounding a 110 SP# from the back of the pack.  Her prior outing was a stalking win in an open allowance at a mile and an eighth,  punching a 109 SP# from just off the early pace setters.  Looks like she’ll be sitting mid pack into the final turn,  and try to beat the late comers to the punch for the monarchman racing operation.

Representing Midas is this is this scratch bred four year old MEDAGLIA D’ORO (x A.P. INDY x STREET CRY) filly. She has had a great start to the year with a Grade 1 runner-up finish and two 117 speed Grade 2 wins under her belt. Last time out she came from the back of the pack to beat VANESSA ATALANTA by one length at the “G2 Golfer’s Wager” at Woodbine up in Ontario. She is coming back on less than four weeks rest but has done that before and it did not affect her performance. She should garner lots of attention at the betting windows and has a great shot at finding a spot on the board.

Her only other Grade 1 start came last time out when she ran 113 speed at this same distance at the “Union Jack Flyer Stakes” and finished in third place behind runner-up RUN FOR LAUGHS and winner MOVANT. She will look to run in the middle of the pack here before kicking it into high gear as they come down the stretch and should be well positioned for the win.

Representing Only Stayers is this six year old SOLITARY STONE Mare out of the Sim Mare EMANCIPATION TOO.
