Did Jockey Lose Whip in Tolerant Tide
Controversy swarmed the Rhode Island press room after the running of the Tolerant Tide Stakes. Dinowheels (my top choice) was able to motor to a near 2-length victory, but he may not have been the best one on the track. Captain Amazing (my third choice) rallied to move within a length of the eventual winner in the final furlong, very much looking like he would take the race. Then, for no apparent reason, it looked like Jockey Scott eased him up and Captain faded back.
At the press conference after the race, Jockey Scott claimed that he dropped his whip late in the race and was unable to encourage the horse to move. Looking at the replay, it is inconclusive as to whther he had the whip or not. In any event, he surely could have slapped the horse with his hands.
Northern Diva (my second selection) ran in the rear of the field most of the race. Northern overcame the pace setters late and fell into the show spot.
Canadian Cougar got away third but didn’t show much stamina to be a serious threat. If it weren’t for the tiring rabbits in the race, I doubt he would’ve finished forth otherwise.
Urko’s Danzig and Unbridled View were the two setting the early pace. Urko’s Danzig got the better of Unbridled View, however, Unbridled View continued to push the issue. Both eventually tired finishing 5th and 6th respectfully.
