What’s Worth 2000 Credits In the Game (Dormant Mares)

This past Sunday the first bids for Dormant Mares (what used to be called Open Mares) were accepted. These are mares owned by players whose master stables have been inactive for a year. These mares have traditionally opened on October First on a first come, first served basis. That meant that at midnight on that date players would fight over the best mares. This season the process has been changed to a lotto system that took place over the first week of October. All of the mares carried a cost of 2000 credits to ‘borrow’. So what do players consider worth 2000 credits? Let’s check it out!

There were a total of 36 mares who received bids during this period. Seventeen received more than one bid with the highest number of bids going to Union Jack Flyer with 29 bids. The next highest was Brabasong with ‘only’ 7 bids. Sweet Sister Mercy (6), Corinna (5) and Skidmore Indy (4) rounded out the top five. Interestingly three of those mares – Union Jack Flyer, Corinna and Skidmore Indy – were by A.P. Indy. Those were his only three 2000 credit mares but he lead the way by sires. Brabasong is one of two by Unbridled’s Song and Sweet Sister Mercy one of two by Kingmambo. Medaglia D’oro, Sadler’s Wells, Giant’s Causeway and Tapit all also sired two of the mares.

There were three Hall of Fame members who were all picked up in this round of bidding. There were a dozen End of Year Award winners, nine of which were snapped up this week. All of the Hall of Famers were EOY winners. Of the remaining 25 mares who were picked up ten were grade one winners. Eleven of the rest were graded winners on the track which means only four were not great runners on the track.

In the breeding shed these mares have produced 212 foals, or an average of 5.89 per mare. Five of them are young mares with just one prior foal. They have produced 14 grade one winners (6.6% of foals), 22 lower graded winners (10.4%) and 43 listed winners (20.2%). That means that of all the foals produced by these mares a staggering 79 or 37.2% have won a stakes race. These are certainly some of the elite mares in the game. Does that make them worth 2000 credits a pop? Well for a number of players the answer to that is a resounding yes.
