This week we are headed to Texas where we have the G3, The Nawbo Derby on the card. The race has drawn in eight contenders that will be attempting to add this G3 win to their trophy case. This race is restricted to 3 year olds and will be at the distance of 8.5 furlongs across the track that should be listed as fast at post time. The morning line odds have been released and the post positions have been drawn. Let us now take a preview of the horse that will get the start in the G3, The Nawbo Derby.

Three starts back this Bay Gelding (FIRING LINE x BLAME x ALYSHEBA) would get up for the win in the G2, Club Stakes this past November in Kentucky as a two year old. After this performance he was moved up in class to start in a couple of G1 races. He ran in December in the G1, Happy New Year but found much disappointment and was never a factor with an eleventh place finish. His most recent start would come on 02/11/2023 in the G1, Vermont Is 4 Lovers at the distance of 9 furlongs. He did not look comfortable in this race and again was never a factor with a thirteenth place finish. The drop in distance and class for this start could be what this horse needs here in Texas when he makes his way out at post time representing the Elite Racing Club residency.
| 2 | TIZ A GUN | KY | 3M | eternity33 | D Hogin | 9 | 2 | 56% | $125,095 | 22.25 | 6/1 |
This Bay Colt (TIZ THE LAW x GUN RUNNER x WAR FRONT) has had two graded starts this season to start off 2023. He would come out in February in Louisiana to make a start in the G3, Risen Star Stakes. He put up a good fight in this race and hit he wire in second just missing by a head with a 102 speed rating. His most recent start would then come on 03/25/2023 when he would go 7 furlongs in Brazil in the G3, South Bronx Stakes. He never found his spot in this race and seemed to be off his stride going around one turn as he crossed the wire well back in thirteenth. The owner is moving him back up to travel two turns this time out and hopes this change will bring with it a better performance than his most recent start. They will come out of the paddock this weekend to represent the Down Under Racing residency.

Two starts back this Brown Gelding out of Pyro (PYRO x ENCOSTA DE LAGO (AUS) x GONE WEST) would go 8 furlongs in February in Denmark to start off his 2023 season in a Listed Stakes, Tout Ou Rien Dirt Challenge. He was all business when at the top of the final turn for home he would come from seven strides back to get up for the win by two and a half lengths. For his most recent start he would return to the track in Dubai on 03/25/2023 to go 9 furlongs in the G1, Sand Castle Derby—Derby Lock Prep. He faced a really strong field of contenders and was taking a big jump in class to make this start. It was not fruitful as he crossed the wire well back in twelfth with a 94 speed rating. The owner is bringing is horse back to the track this weekend with a drop in class and distance of which he feels his horse will run more comfortable when he breaks from his gate representing The Mecca Residency.
| 4 | MIGHT AS WELL TRY | KY | 3M | scarletfire | J Selden | 8 | 2 | 62% | $84,419 | 6.00 | 9/2 |
Next is this Brown Colts (MEDAGLIA D’ORO x AWESOME AGAIN x MR. PROSPECTOR) who in recent starts has shown a tendency to run at or near the front out of the gate. Two starts back he would go 9 furlongs in a Listed Stakes in Iowa, the Journeyman Dirt Route. He grabbed the early lead and would stay there until they made the turn down the stretch. He would be run down by a pack of thieves as he faded back to sixth as he crossed under the wire with a 102 speed rating. He would then return to the track in Kansas for his most recent start on 03/18/2023 to go 9.5 furlongs in a Listed Stakes, Enough Come Dirt Route. He lingered just off the lead in the early going but again would fade down the stretch and fall back to cross the wire in sixth with a 99 speed rating. The owner hopes to see a better performance this weekend as he drops him back down in distance to 8.5 furlongs of which is a distance his horse has won at before. They will come out at post time and over to their gate representing the All-Stars Racing residency.
| 5 | STOP RIGHT THERE | KY | 3M | lasthope | W Cahill | 8 | 4 | 87% | $321,105 | 73.00 | 2/1 |
This Brown Colt (NOT THIS TIME x STORM CAT x SEEKING THE GOLD) has been running very well for the owner during his career. Three starts back he would pick up a graded win in the G3, Giant Slayer Classic on a “good” track in Denmark while making his first start on the season. Next, he was sent out in February and picked up a second place finish in the G2, Moises Alou Cap. His most recent start would them come on 04/08/2023 going 9 furlongs in Kentucky in the G1, Corkscrew Stakes—Derby Lock Prep. In normal style he would get the lead out of the gate and held it until after the third call. He would be run down coming down the stretch and would finish up in fourth with a 103 speed rating. This off the board effort would ensure not getting a spot in the Bluegrass Derby, but the owner has a good horse here and looks for a long successful career for him when he heads out this weekend representing the Midas residency.
| 6 | BONEDLESSOHN | KY | 3G | ksparow | T Quila | 11 | 4 | 73% | $129,175 | 9.75 | 8/1 |
Making his way out this weekend will be this Bay Gelding (MENDELSSOHN x AMERICAN PHAROAH x LOPE DE VEGA) who seems to have been improving in the later months of last season. His first start of the 2023 season would come in February in an allowance race of which he would get the win. He would then be sent back out in Illinois to run on a “sloppy” track in the G3, Chicago Derby. He had trouble throughout this race and hit the wire well back in eleventh. He then made his most recent start in Kentucky on 04/15/2023 where he would go 9.5 furlongs in a $70200 NW5L Local Allowance. This was a short field of four horses that started the race, and this horse would finish in third out of the picture with an 85 speed rating. The horse looks to get his groove back as his owner drops him back down in distance for this start. He is in hope to see a fast track at post time, and he should get his wish when they come out to represent the Down Under Racing residency.
| 7 | VIOLENT PACKAGE | KY | 3G | amir1625 | V Jennings | 10 | 3 | 50% | $124,689 | 25.50 | 5/1 |
This Chestnut Gelding (MIDSHIPMAN x VIOLENCE x CURLIN) has found difficulty in his three most recent starts. But four starts back in December of last season he would get a third place finish in the G3, Pleasure Stakes in Idaho. His most recent start would come this season on 03/25/2023 when he would go 9.5 furlongs in Kentucky in the G1, All Saints Derby—Derby Lock Prep. He would never be a factor in this race and would finish up well back in thirteenth. The owner looks for a much better start for his horse this time out in Texas as he drops him in class and distance. Horse and jockey will saddle up in the paddock and come out to the track at post time representing the Elite Racking Club residency.
| 8 | DYNOMUTT | KY | 3M | legends1 | C Shoemaker | 8 | 2 | 87% | $109,092 | 8.50 | 6/1 |
Coming out of the final gate of this race will be this Chestnut Colt (KEEN ICE x GIANT’S CAUSEWAY x DEPUTY MINISTER). He has been doing well for the owner and has only one race off the boards in his eight career starts. He has never raced at the stakes level before but has been doing nicely at the allowance level. Last time out we would see him on 03/24/2023 in Kentucky where he would go 8.5 furlongs in a $50700 NW3L Local Allowance race. He got a third place finish this time with a 98 speed rating which equaled his career best. The owner is in hope his horse can rise to the challenge here in Texas making his first stakes start when he makes his way over to his gate representing the Old School Racing Stables residency.
Good luck to all owners and horses!
