A field of seven Fillies and mares will line up in the Grade II Adelaide Mile run at a mile on the firm turf course at
- Biter (10/1) is a 6 year old mare out of (KINGMAMBO x SADLER’S WELLS x BUCKPASSER) trained by upperhand2 and ridden by J Kohlmorgen. Biter enters this race as a surprising long-shot at odds of only 10/1. She is a true turf miler with seven of her career eight wins coming at a mile on the turf, an impressive record for the long-shot of the race. This mare has not remained consistent after her impressive win last December in the Grade II Trash Can Mile where she posted a magnificent 111 Speed Figure; however, since that race she has beaten a combined 64 ¾ lengths in four races. Biter has beaten the favorite of the race, Northern Pulp; in that same Grade II Trash Can which proves that this horse can run and compete with the best in this field. Biter has the ability there to win the race we must beg to ask which race will Biter run in the Mile.
- Northern Pulp (2/1) is a 5 year old mare out of (PULPIT x NORTHERN DANCER x BUCKPASSER) trained by theogbarn and ridden by D Evans. Northern Pulp comes into this race as the well deserving yet slight favorite. As a two-time Grade I winner this horse is the class of the field and will be the one to beat. Northern Pulp’s last three races at the mile distance on the turf with speed figures all over 105. She won the Grade I Sexy Muffins Classic and the Grade I -Turn the Calendar Mile and is the class of the field. She is familiar with a couple of horse in the race and knows what it takes to win. As the horse to beat in this race we must wonder if the pressure will get the horse, owner, or jockey; or if she will win the race she is expected to. If this horse can remain consistent like her last three turf mile races then she will be the horse to beat and that doesn’t make anyone else in the race feel comfortable.
- Queen Roid(IRE) (9/1) is a 4 year old filly out of (AZAMOUR (IRE) x KING OF KINGS (IRE) x IRON) trained by dundey8 and ridden by M Miller. Entering the race as the least experienced filly, she only has 13 races under her belt in her young but promising career; she will have to overcome it in order to win. This is a filly that has not race on any dirt surface and will continue that trend in the Grade II Adelaide Mile. Queen Roid(IRE) has only raced in three stakes races-two listed and a Grade III-and will take a nice step forward to a Grade II. Out of her last three stakes she has won two posting a 106 Speed Figure in both those races. She has won over 50% of her races in her career but she will need to take it up a notch in order to win this race. Her future is bright but is this the time she will have a breakout race.
- Torch the Flame(KY) (7/2) is a 4 year old filly out of (KINGMAMBO x SEATTLE SLEW x ALYDAR) trained by super7 and ridden by I Pegram. When Torch the Flame(KY) connections announced that she would be entered in the Grade II Adelaide Mile, I couldn’t help but smirk. This horse is not a horse you haven’t heard about because you will remember that it was just last October that she was running in the Breeders Bowl Turf Mile. Not only did she compete but she finished well and ran third against the Sim’s most powerful turf milers. Prior to the Breeders Bowl she was at her best with three consecutive wins-in both a Grade I and Grade II-however she has yet to return to that performance and has had a disappointing 2008 campaign. Torch the Flame(KY) defiantly has the class and if she can find herself again and run like she did in 2007 she is defiantly a contender and a horse of the future.
- Sisson’s Puss E(KY) (8/1) is a 4 year old filly out of (E DUBAI x STORM CAT x ALYDAR) trained by taztiger and ridden by N Hartel. Not the nicest of names to say in the Sim, but Sisson’s Puss E(KY) is defiantly a force to be dealt with. It seems that it took her later to mature and find her true speed in her 4 year old campaign. She had been able to take it to the next level until late 2007, early 2008 but it seems that she is still one step behind the graded stakes winners in the race. Sisson’s Puss E(KY) has never won a stakes race, while competing in only three, so it must be asked if she can compete with these other fillies or mares. Unless she is ready to take it to the next level this horse just doesn’t have the stakes experience to win, however, her best effort may be approaching.
- Infernal Tutor(GB) (4/1) is a 4 year old filly out of (MOULIN(GB) x TREMPOLINO x APALACHEE) trained by lender and ridden by R Bailey. This filly is the second one in this race which has a career win percentage of 50% or higher, and boy has she been impressive. This horse defiantly has the speed to go to the front in this race and that may be her best chance to win and compete. Infernal Tutor(GB) has posted over a 100 Speed Figure in her last five despite winning only two of them. She is coming off a win in her last start-The Proud Mary Stakes-which should show us that she may be ready to take this one. Infernal Tutor(GB) defiantly has the speed to steal the race which should be a problem for the rest of the fillies and mares in this race, but can she keep it going through the whole race.
- Cosmo Girl (7/2) is a 5 year old mare out of (STORM CAT x GONE WEST x NIJINSKY II) trained by theoc2 and ridden by Z Skunk. Talk about experience, this horse has 39 races in her career and 13 wins, so she knows how to win. Cosmo Girl boasts the stakes experience in this one, which makes her an intriguing horse. She did compete in the Breeders Bowl last year with a bad finish amongst the Sim’s best. Despite her experience, wins have not come easy for this 5 year old mare. Over her last nine races, she has only one win but four seconds or thirds. She knows how to make money as well as she comes into the race as the top money earner. Cosmo Girl just doesn’t look like she has the form to win the race, however she is as tough as nails and will compete and probably find a way to get herself in the money.
Joe’s Pick
- (2)Northern Pulp: A Grade I winner will overwhelm this field
- (7)Cosmo Girl: She is tough and gritty but she has a ton of heart
- (6) Infernal Tutor: The speed she shows will land her in the third spot
