The odds and the rankings definitely don’t match up in the 3rd running of the Halo Spanking Special for 3+ going 7 ½ on the dirt in
The Field
SJ IN SILVER
This is a lightly raced 3YO who has been just short in its last four stakes races. It needs the extra distance and some help in this long sprint for this big time closer to win its first stakes race. I look for co-favorite to pop somewhere between 108 and 111.
KING SIM STAR
This stakes winner has nibbled with triple digits which will make it very hard for it to win Saturday. This stalker hass no wins in 5 graded stakes races, but does have a 3rd in one of those grade stakes races. Two races back it posted a nice 106, but this will be its third race in four weeks.
HANG MAD OUTLAW
This lightly raced horse needs the distance to compete and higher speed numbers (97). This horse has struggled in its previous 3 stakes races, but the added distance should help this horse as it sits back about 4 to 5 lengths from the leaders.
UNWORTHY
I look for this horse to press for the lead and the distance will be no problem for this 2-time winner of stakes races. This beauty is just beginning to regain its form after its bad race 5 back. A problem I have with this horse is that it is racing in its third race in three weeks. This would be a favorite of mine but I’m thinking its needs the rest.
SULTAN OF RAHY
Another horse that needs this extra long sprint to be about to compete. This closer has five wins in its last 8 races and is a stakes winner two races back. It has been well trained going from maidens to allowance, and finally the stakes races. It has increasing speed numbers with a 105 recently. I’ve seen this pattern before and this is a nice mid-range long shot to keep your eye on Saturday.
BARB’S LEISURE
This is a difficult horse to understand. It is rarely a fan favorite but it has won 3 stakes races with its last win 5 races back. This closer will enjoy the longer sprint and could post somewhere around a 105.
PUDDLE GULCH
A nice horse that wants to be about 4-5 lengths back when they begin their turn for home. It has no wins in five previous attempts at stakes races but did finish 2nd in the Grade II Pinto Handicap last year. Lately it has won four of its last 8 allowance races.
PEACE ALLY
This is one of the more successful horses in the field Saturday ranked #37 in Dirt Sprints. It won 7 of its first 15 races including four stakes win and a win in the Grade III Burrito Grande Breeders Bowl. This stalker has faced better competition than it will face Saturday, but in its last six races it has only 3 seconds to show for it. The odds on favorite could find itself in the lead since there is very little speed in this race.
BLACK ARROW
This 3YO is a winner of three of its last 5 races in which it posted a 109 last out. That was this colts first ever stakes win. This stalker hopes to press for the lead and is well rested with its last race being 6 weeks ago. The distance is perfect for this 11-1 choice to win this race. If everything happens as expected this horse should be in the lead as it turns for home will have to fight off the big time closers in this race.
LEGENDARY THIEF
This big time closer will be competing in its second stakes race. In its last race it popped an eye popping 112 at today’s distance. Here is another well rested 3YO that seems primed and ready for an upset of the favorite. As with many others in this race, it needs a speed duel for it to succeed at the front.
INSTINCTIVE STYLE
This horse hopes to press for the lead and maybe create a duel with Peace Ally. It won three of its first 5 races, but has lost its last six races. It looks like this horse is still trying to find out which distance it will be better suited for. Today is not the day to find out.
This 5YO could deliver strong message that it is for real Saturday. This one-time $2500 claimer posted a 111 last out. This horse looks it can travel up to 1M with ease and with a nice 3 week rest it could be a threat for Peace Ally and SJ In Silver.
The best horse according to the rankings is Peace Ally but there are so many others in the field that have better speed numbers coming into the race. There is no front runner in the race so I expect Peace Ally will try to go wire to wire and unless some other horse jumps into the fray it could be Peace Ally’s day. Yet as some my readers know, I like upsets and long-shots. This race is set up for that to happen with Black Arrow, Legendary Thief and the improving Sultan of Rahy to give me a nice exacta and trifecta tomorrow.
