Welcome to Ascot for the first of todays two Graded races, the Maonofjunk Stakes over the extended mile on the truf course. A decent field of nine go to post and according to the morning line most are in with a chance. Let’s take a look at the runners-

SMOG CHECK(AUS) (REDOUTE’S CHOICE (AUS) x FASLIYEV (IRE) x DIESIS(GB))

Not much to go on here- one win from one race with a good 79sp over 7f on debut. Closed late on that occasion and is bred for at least a mile so should handle the trip no problem. Bred from a seven times raced mare, ther’s not much to go on there. There should certainly be plenty of improvement from the first race and he could be anything. Certainly looks a danger and the 7/1 on the morning line loks tempting.

DANASEA(ENG) (DANSILI (GB) x SEATTLE SLEW x LYPHARD)

Has won one from two, with the loss coming on dirt and is out of a Grade B mare who has produced one graded winner already. Looked comfortable at this trip in his win and is again open to a load of improvement. Being from a grade B mare and being off to a good start bode well for this ones chances and he promises to be invlolved at the finish.

SCIENTIFIC PROOF(IRE) (GALILEO (IRE) x SEEKING THE GOLD x DANZIG)

Bit more experience here, with two wins (including a stakes) from three races, with the loss coming in the Grade I High Flyer over 8f. Was a fast closing fourth in that race and is bred to stay around 12f so he might still find this trip a little short. He is the first foal of a Grade G mare who was fairly lightly raced.. With two runs with 80 + sp’s already he would be a danger to any field but i’m a little concerned that he might be finishing too late.

TELL ME NO LIES(IRE) (GEORGE WASHINGTON (IRE) x KINGMAMBO x AFFIRMED)

One of two fillies in todays line-up and a rare offspring of Gorgeous George, out a Grade G mare who has already produced a graded winner. Struggled a bit in the Grade III Eclipse over 7f and improved for the step up to a mile in her last race. She will certainly win stakes but it’s taken her five races to break the 80 sp mark and that’s a concern. May find one or two too good here and looks like a place at best.

SPARTIATE(ENG) (PIVOTAL(GB) x DUBAI MILLENNIUM (GB) x CAERLEON)

Another who is two from three and has already won a graded race, the Grade III Omnipotent over 7.5f. Out of a grade C mare, he looks ready for the mile trip and as he has threatened to break 80 twice already, he must be up to running at least that today. Must be a massive danger to all and could take all the beating.

KALEIDOSCOPED(ENG) (RED RANSOM x RAINBOW QUEST x AFFIRMED)

The outsider of the filed and the second filly, she looks up against it here. An opening win but with just a 64 sp and that was over todays trip. She will improve, although she is out of a grade F mare. The question is wether she can improve by the 20 sp points it’s going to take to win this. That’s a huge ask and I just can’t see it.

LIONS AND BALLY(FR) (BALLINGARRY (IRE) x A.P. INDY x LION CAVERN)

An interesting one here, having won two from three but showed obvious improvement for the change to grass and the step up in trip latest. A mile may be his trip and he’s already run an 81 sp so he must be a lively outsider at 9/1 and could easily get a place with just a little improvement. Out of a grade G mare looks as though he’s a future graded winner if not today.

BETE NOIRE(KY) (BERNARDINI x DEPUTY MINISTER x SADLER’S WELLS)

Is two from five and wasn’t really going anywhere until the step up in trip to 8f latest. He produced an 80 sp that day and on breeding looks to get at least 10f. The question is does he need another rise in trip to improve again or can he run a high 80’s over the mile? Tough to call but I think he may already need further based on his earlier racing pattern and although he’ll be closing fast at the finish I can’t see a win.

PORT ROYALE(IRE) (MONTJEU (IRE) x RAINBOW QUEST x NORTHERN PROSPECT)

Bred for an Arc De Triumph and a derby next year, he’s already run an 84 sp but again could only finish a closing second over this trip latest. Only has three races and is bred to be a star so he may have enough quality to over come a trip that looks too short. In with a chance but again may be closing too late to get the money. Watch out in next years big turf races though !!

OVERALL

A tough race to call with so many being so inexperienced and some already looking as though the mile is too short, but for me SPARTIATE(ENG) looks the one too beat, although expect plenty of future Graded winners from this line up.
