Race # 10

The NEW ATLANTIS Memorial

Stakes
A Mile and Five Sixteenths

Good Turf

$40,000

We had a lousy summer here in Belgium and this week is no different: some rain , some dryness and it is resulting in a little wet turf track here in Ostend for the  NEW ATLANTIS memorial.

This 5y old brown colt out of the big remiller66-stables has a pretty good record winning almost half of his races. We must say that he has been struggling a bit this year, managing only 1 win and this in a small field. He could have the advantage of the good track today since he managed to hit the board in both his offtrack-races. This former winner of the G2 Kakarazuka Tinen Cup might find the perfect conditions to try and win his second race of this season. The bookies’ favourite today. One minus: he does not have the topjockey on his back.

Record: 11 races: 4-2-1

It is that time of the year where our beloved 3y olds try to make the step up and search for older competition. This 3y old Hennessy(may he rest in peace)-son is the first one of this lot trying to do that. Last year it took some time to discover this one does not like the dirt and he does not like to sprint either. The switch to turf did him well and in his 7 turfraces he never was off the board. He already won a Stakes and also has proven last time that he is fit for Graded company (at least against 3y olds). I personally think this guy can surprise today and may prove he is up to task. He also won his first and only try on an offtrack so we know he is capable. Odds of 7/1 or decent enough to try a bet.

This former G2-Posh Purse Stakes winner has got a title to defend. He was the winner last year of this New Atlantis Memorial and if you look at the latest results he is a strong candidate again: two Stakeswins in the last three races and both of them on the same 10,5 furlong. He raced 3 offtracks before and he won all three of them. He has one of the topjockeys aboard. These all are elements showing that this might be the guy to beat in this race. My personal favourite for this race. Racing for the Jakematt Stables which seem to have a very good average winpercentage: almost all of his stables seem to have a winpercentage of 11% or more. 14% on average so we here have a trainer who knows his business. Another element why I pick Barb’s Comfort today.

4          7M        ST STEVEN                    Mauritian           16/1     Danehill x Hula Chief II x Hail To Reason

Record: 44 races: 4-1-8

The oldest one in the gates today and one that I think will not be part of the play today. His average speed in the last races is about 15 to 20 points too low to play a part in the race today. He even did not managa to post a 90SP in his last 18 races. He has been racing in small field allowances and that and the claimers is where this colt should belong. I give him no chance.

5          6M        BEDLAM                                    liza15                58/1     Southern Halo x Saint Ballado x Dr. Fager

Record: 11 races: 2-1-2

Sorry for the trainer but I can be very short with this one: this horse does not belong in a Stakes. If you look at the speeds it looks like a claimer to me.

6          3M        BAGORED                     zwhisper                       3/1       Bago x Red Ransom x Royal and Regal

Record: 11 races: 3-4-2

The Topjockey chose this 3y youngster to ride: is that an indication? Who knows? Fact is that Bagored posted a 109SP 2 races ago which is the highest of all horses in this race. It is a difficult horse to judge: he already hit the board in a G1 posting a 100SP on 9turf but he also disappointed in the Adelaide Derby which was 12 turf. Did he just have an offday or is 12f too far? According to the bloodlines the 10,5f today should be no problem. The only questionmark remains the offtrack on which he did not ride before. Difficult to tell but according to the jockeys he is in there with a chance.

Conclusion: I think our two youngsters will hit the board as they seem to be ready for the bigger work. However I think the experience of our titledefender will have it’s impact
