Well Bred Field To Race In Iowa

Well Bred Field To Race In Iowa

Iowa – Every week seems to bring a more outrageous name, given to the feature race, than the week before.  I cannot fathom where some of these names come from and I have been here a long time.  I know many are named after computer generated names that went to horses before the advent of breeding such as The Person Roger.  I know several were named after players that came from some characteristic, real or imagined such as The Posh Stakes and I was responsible for several – all the ones about fainting goats and fixing sprinklers, thanks to visiting with Unbridled who used to be in charge of naming the stakes.  However, while The Dirtydirtydishragyou Stakes has been around for some time, I have no idea where the name came from.  On Saturday afternoon this oddly named race will go as the featured event.  A Grade III, it will carry a purse of $125,000 and ten older fillies and mares will travel a mile and a sixteenth in hope of fame and glory.  Here is a look at the field by post position.

On the rail will be Wemblem’s lightly regarded Diablerie (12/1), a royally bred daughter 4YO of Storm Cat that cost her owner a pretty penny.  Diablerie has won two of her last eight starts.  On the negative side they were both allowance races and this is quite a class jump and her only recent graded start was a disaster as she could only manage to beat one.  That said she cranked out triple digit speed figures with those two wins and she has finished second in two listed stakes, The Near Until Freak and The Mama Rat.  She seems to be training well at this time and may one day live up to early expectations.

Super18 will saddle Ran Away (7/1) a pretty chestnut daughter of Sadler’s Wells.  Ranked # 24 she has won six of 21 starts and comes in to this race of a win last time out in the nine furlong Maria’s Project.  She has flashes of speed and often brings home a check but she has only managed two wins over the last year.  She likes the distance, is another that is extremely well bred, comes from an excellent barn and has a good rider so if she has any talent she seems to be well placed in this race.

Post three will be occupied by Flyburg’s Danzee (6/1) a 5 YO mare by Johannesburg.  Like those in the first three post positions, this mare has the breeding to belong in the sim elite.  She is conditioned by Kyrin and has won 14 of her 30 starts, and while they were mostly allowance races, she has also won six of her last eight and that is impressive in anyone’s book.  She went wire to wire in The Their Brats, three races back and then proved she doesn’t need things her own way by racing mid-field before drawing off to win by two in The Minsky Handicap.  She was a closing 4th last time out in the Grade II Razorback and hopefully her 5% rider can figure out how to use her tactical speed and use it well.

Scream entered his nice 5 YO mare by Montjue, Master And Command (4/1).  Ranked #10, MC has won 10 of her 32 starts and even more impressive is that she has been in the money in 28 of those starts.  Her worst finish in her last eight was a third and that consistency is what every trainer looks for in a horse.  MC won the Grade III DelPenn Distaff with a 111 speed figure and was second last time out in the Grade I Orange Blossom.  She has a good rider on board but he will have to hustle her along early as the distance may be a tad short for her.

Eyrie (9/1) has won her last two races and will be looking for her third in a row.  She does need things her own way and it’s a good thing that she breaks like a quarter horse before  going as far and as fast as she can.  The 5 YO daughter of Sky Mesa is owned and trained by Upperhand, one of the smarter trainers around, and I am sure he will have given the jock instructions to send this winner of seven.  Look for her to be in front and the rest will have to come and get her.

The morning line guy didn’t much care for the chances of Agadoo (15/1) a 4 YO daughter of Gone West who is conditioned by Husky1.  Husky1 has surprised people in the past so maybe it will be the morning line person who is surprised this week.  Agadoo has only won three of her 18 starts and will not be carrying an Einstein of a rider this week, but she did win an allowance race seven back  and better than that – she finished a closing fourth last time out in the Grade III Ouchy Nips Special at a mile.  She should like the extra real estate and if she can run back to her race last time, she could get part of this.

Czar will send out his Forty Niner mare Stormy Megan (5/1) a winner of 13 and has over a million dollars in the bank.  Czar had the vet truck backed up to her stall and will be hoping that with some good medication she will regain some of her old spark.  The 7 YO may have some tired legs from her 45 races but she has the class and class can never be counted out.  Stormy won at the distance three back but one has to hope her under achieving pilot this week won’t interfere with her and let her do her thing because she surely has been around the race track more times than he has.

Sledwith will lead up K’s Finnancier (9/2), the second Forty Niner daughter in the race.  Ranked # 47, the plain brown mare is not easy on the eyes but pretty is as pretty does and this 5 YO is does well.  She has won almost half her starts (12) and has earned more than $500,000 in her 26 race career.  She won the The Shaana Stakes and followed that with a win in the Grade II East Coast Mile.   She was a closing second last time out in The Trillium Craft and all her races have been with excellent speed figures.  She is another that will appreciate the extra distance and she will certainly have some speed to run towards.

Broadway Angel (8/1) is a 4 YO daughter of Vindication and is owned and trained by Theleague.  With seven wins from her 27 starts this filly is another that will have to be gotten after early as she likes more distance to run her best.  She certainly can handle the competition as she won the Grade III Annie Oakley six back and was a fast closing second last time out in The Vengeful Squire.  Theleague was busy on Wednesday and missed the draw.  His assigned jock has only an 8% strike rate which could hurt.

On the outside of Broadway Angel will be Sign Of The Devil (7/1) a 4 YO bad acting filly by Awesome Again.  Trained by Greenapple, she may not be the best in the post parade or the saddling paddock or even the gate but she has won seven of 20 starts including two of her last three.  They were all allowance races and all were wire to wire victories.  She has thrown out some good speed figures but this is a big leap up the class ladder and she had the misfortune to draw the outside.  With at least two speed horses to her inside she will have to hustle right along if she wants the lead.

The Dirtydirtydishragyou, despite its name, should be one of the better races this Saturday and will certainly be hotly contested with any one of the entries likely to be first at the wire.  Good Luck.
