Brrrr…Welcome to the frigid NE. The grounds crew somehow has the track in running condition for this
week’s under card event. No one envies the jockeys, especially with wind chills below zero. With co-
favorites at 5/1, a full field, and frigid conditions, lets get down to business….

1 | ROMAN CANDLE | 18/1 | 5yo out of an “F” rated mare that has produced a GW progeny. Sired by Unbridled’s Song, he has a couple of conditions left to fulfill. Last win was a few back in a NW3L, and hasn’t had a 3 digit SP so far. We have to believe the race will leave him wanting. In checking his record and breeding, this horse may well take to turf if given a few more tries at various distances on that surface.
2 | MY | 5/1 |
Gritty 5yo out of a “G” rated he/she mare. This horse is a former G1-G3 winner. Starts off his 5yo campaign with a win, and should be kicking the barn stall down for this. With present form he should be a couple of lengths back to the pace and ready to pounce in the stretch. Very much a contender.
3 | 7/1 |
4yo out of a “D” rated he/she mare by Storm Boot. This guy loves to win, but only has one stakes win early in his 2yo season. When at the top of his game, SP’s prove he belongs here. One flaw may be his liking for the short “do or die” 5f sprints. Looking for him to be pace or vying for lead.
4 | 5/1 |
6yo scratch bred by Southern Halo. This will be the 54th start for this warrior that sports 15 sprint victories. First start for this 2007 season will show whether or not he will feel the effects of W&T. He has been resilient to this point, but one never knows when sim horses reach this plateau. If he is still up to it, he fits well.
5 | DEPUTY WARRIOR | 7/1 |
Started off the season well with a nice 3rd place finish last out. 5yo out of a “G” rated he/she mare by Deputy Minister. This will be only his 21st race, so there are many more bullets left in the belt. He has shown a couple of decent SP’s…one of which came in a stakes win three back. One would have to believe he is sitting on a big race. Probably 3-4 lengths back with a late move. Decent jock. Contender.
6 | WONDERBOY EVIL | 37/1 |
Purchased in the auction for a mil+, this colt is out of an “F” rated mare by Storm Cat. Probably bought for breeding as well as thoughts of his improvement in a new barn. Lightly raced to this point and should improve with age and experience. Still has many conditions and probably would do well to get them out of the way first. He would have to really jump up here to be in the mix. Minor check may be available.
7 | FLY’S MOTIVATOR( | 7/1 |
Probably the best 4yo in this. Scratch bred by Montjeu, he sports a G1 sprint win and place as a 3yo. He ran against some tough horses in his 4yo debut, and now meets softer. Comes from one of the “Fly” stables which are always tough. Top jock in the irons, so no reason for him to get a lousy ride. Contender with improvement.
8 | SMOKENTATE | 6/1 |
Thirteen W’s for this 5yo scratch bred by Orientate. Just got caught in last, running a 107SP!! Should break sharply here and show the way. Even with a slight decline after blowout in last, he will be the one to beat in this. One thing is for sure, nothing will be left in the bag. Jock Silver is hot right now also, so that bodes well.
9 | 13/1 |
5yo out of an “H” rated mare by
10 | IN THE ARMY NOW | 8/1 |
5yo out of a “G” rated mare by Polish Navy. Former claimer that won a G3 last year. Last race was first of 2007 after a 10 week layoff. One can’t judge results of that race except to say there should be improvement here. Will there be enough to be competitive; high
11 | COMMANCHE | 22/1 |
Gutsy 5yo scratch bred by Cozzene. Claimed multiple times in last seven races, this horse continues to amaze. Present trainer figures why not try a stakes? Normally I would suggest otherwise; but with this horse, who knows? Go get them, Commanche!
12 | SHARKS OLEANDER | 12/1 |
Colt out of a “G” rated mare by Olmodavor. Shows nice SP’s on dirt, but all his wins have come on grass. Probably drives the trainer nuts! I know it would drive me crazy. Placing him in this stakes should show trainer whether or not to switch back to surface that has produced his winning ways.
13 | CHIEF RULER | 99/1 |
With only one win, and claimer caliber, enough said.
14 | LANGFUHR SLAM | 30/1 |
Yet another claimer trying to beat the odds. |
