Stakes
A mile and one eighth
Fast Dirt

All horses, 4 years old and up
and are lucky, you’ll max out on exotics. What with co-favorites at 6/1 and others that
have an excellent chance, there are $$$ to be made. Let’s see if we can sort out a few.
Jockeys may or may not be much of a factor as the season is young.

1 | BEND IN THE RIVER | 12/1 | Filly out of an “H” rated mare by Distorted Humor. She won at the distance in the Air Marilyn two back, beating Congressional, a Graded winner who had the pace to herself. This gal will probably lay back some and try to turn it on in the turn for home. She’ll have plenty of speed to run at in this, so it sets up perfectly. Of course she’s running against older horses, so this will be a big test for her.
2 | CROWN ME KING | 6/1 |
5yo out of an “H” rated mare by Hold That Tiger. Grade placed and a stakes winner, he has disappointed lately. Trainer decided to give him a few tries on grass in the last few, but to no avail. Odds are deceiving here as he is a very tough sprinter. He knows one strategy…in front till he drops. If this was a sprint or mile, I’d give him a chance. Alas, it isn’t.
3 | DR.KINGSHIFT | 15/1 |
Colt out of an “F” rated mare by Monarchos. He won twice as a 2yo and once in his 3yo season. Hasn’t done much for a while now and unless he has a milkshake, he probably won’t do much here. He still has a few conditions to complete.
4 | BGS UNCLE CHARLIE | 7/1 |
Scratch bred 5yo by | |||
5 | MATT | 7/1 |
Colt out of an “F” rated he/she mare by Smart Strike. Yet another sprinter/miler that is looking for maybe more than he can handle. What impressed me about this colt were his back to back races on the grass way back when. That appears to be an option. Other than that he has run some big figures at a mile (1/16th) on the dirt. He was unfortunate to draw into some tough races and get beat while posting those big figures. Possibility at 7/1.
6 | MIORO | 6/1 |
Colt out of an “F” rated he/she mare by Smarty Jones. He has looked smart at 10f in his 3yo campaign. Last out was a flop to start off his 4yo season, but I have to believe he will step up here. He will likely sit well back and put on a one run show as there is a lot of early speed here. While some of the speedsters are spitting the bit, he should just be starting to shift gears….contender.
7 | GRACEPOINTE PRAYER | 10/1 |
Scratch bred Cryptoclearance colt coming off an easy allowance victory. He broke his maiden in a 9.5f
8 | FLAT TOP | 12/1 |
5yo out of a “C” rated mare with progeny that have not produced that well. This horse is by Unbridled’s Song and one would think he should be better. Just like real life, one never knows. He is certainly competitive at allowance levels where he toasts his victims. However, his tries at stakes leaves much to be desired; at least to this point. The problem he might have here is his style of racing. He likes the front end and with speed in this race, he probably will wear out if there’s a pace duel. Not sure if the trainer has tried to use a .80 setting, but that may help. With the jockey’s record so far, it can’t hurtJ
9 | RAIN | 27/1 |
Colt out of an “H” rated mare by Rainbow Quest. Coming off an allowance win in last and still the longest shot here. Reason, slow SP’s. His breeding suggests a bit of a plodder that can run looong. As the season progresses, I believe he will improve in speed and distance. Look for him later in the season at 12f+.
10 | CANNONBALL FREAK( | 18/1 |
Scratch bred colt by Peintre Celebre. Placed in his 1st out as a 4yo in the Down The Jazz stakes. Looks to be a terror at a mile as his SP’s suggest. This is a big jump for him as he has many conditions to fulfill. Broke his maiden at 8.5f, but spit the bit at 10f. Trainer has a 19% win average, so I’ll keep my thoughts to myselfJ
11 | GLAD | 11/1 |
6yo scratch bred by Lil’s Lad and trained by one of the nicest guys in the sim. With fifty races under his saddle, this old timer can still pump out a 100SP when his joints aren’t stiff (I’m talking ‘bout the horse, Lou). Nine furlongs is his game, and if he was two years younger, it wouldn’t be a contest. Looking at his recent performances it appears he may cash a check in this. Good luck, Lou J
12 | SUMMER SLEW | 12/1 |
6yo scratch bred by Summer Squall. After a nine week layoff a little while back, this horse has improved greatly. He won the Again Find stakes at
13 | GUNS OF AUGUST | 6/1 |
Pardon me, but the name of this horse brings back some ugly memories of Dan Rather. He had a 60 Minutes program of the same name years ago in which he showed me exactly how distorted his reporting could be at times. OK, now that I have that off my chest, on to the horse that should probably have been the lone favorite. His record is one of “almosts”, but at the same time this isn’t a graded event. He’s sporting two 100+ SP’s in his recent efforts and has the top rider in Ross (who is excellent anytime). Lightly raced 5yo by Deputy Commander, who usually throws late bloomers. He shouldn’t be too far off the pace in this, and is very steady at a distance. Win or place is a call for him.
14 | ANCIENT VIC(GB) | 22/1 |
Scratch bred by Old Vic. Would like to get excited about this horse because he sported a 103SP at 9f when he won his NW3L. However, that was moons ago, and he has been less than exciting since. His last was an improvement in a stakes event, but he really has to step it up to cash a minor check. |
