Two Year Old Glory – Synopsis
Two Year Old Glory
What Have We Learned?
If you’ve been following this set of articles, you know that we’ve been looking back at the past Sim Eclipse Award winners in the two year old division to see if we can find out what this years Breeders Bowl Juvenile entry trainers and owners have to look forward to in the coming years with their prized youngsters.

These are all fantastic horses that anyone of us would be drooling over in the window of the Two Year Old Horse Store down on Main Street. Any one of them would be the culmination of an owners dream and is probably a once in a lifetime occurrence.
Unfortunately, we’ve seen that having one of the very best two year olds is certainly no sure thing that they will ultimately be one of the best horses as a three year old and beyond. Let’s face it, we knew that going in, we’ve all seen horses that were a shining star only to burn out like a shooting star across the sky. I must admit however that I was a bit surprised how many didn’t go on to greatness. Only eight of the twenty won more than two times as a three year old. It was substantially worse after they turned four and beyond.
Another thing that really surprised me was the amount of horses that actually made it past the four year old plateau. I guess it shouldn’t in this “what have you done for me lately” world that we live in but I guess that I would believe that it would be hard to breed over a prized horse as early as some of these were. Even a bigger shock was how many of these horses have been abandoned. That is a part of this game that I wish could be changed in some way. I hate the fact that fantastic horses like these will never be able to be used by anyone. That is pretty unrealistic as real life goes although I guess in some ways it could be equated to horses in the real world that either are gelded or unable to procreate.
The next thing that our study has shown, and this is probably not a surprise either, is that having a champion two year old sure doesn’t guarantee a strong offspring.

In thirteen tries from the breeding shed we have one Graded win and a couple of Stakes Placed in the entire bunch. There are a few solid runners and most are too young to really tell yet. It certainly doesn’t look promising though. These offspring came from both broodmares and sex-changed Sires. You would certainly hope that with a champion two year old, one of the very best that you would have a better than average chance of having an award winning little one to pin your hopes and dreams on.
In the end, it appears that if you have a two year old running in this weekend’s Breeders Bowl, you had better enjoy it while you can. Most will never reach the heights that they have in this juvenile year and while that may sound a bit harsh I am willing to bet that not one of the owners of these excellent juveniles would trade this one year of Two Year Old Glory for anything. And the other thing to remember is that somewhere out there is this year’s General’s Chariot!
I’ve certainly enjoyed researching this series and crunching the numbers. It is so much of what we do in this fantastic racing game. I hope you have enjoyed the articles as much as I have writing them. See you all in Kentucky this weekend for the Breeders Bowl!
