Breeders Bowl Undercard Youth Turf Sprint Stakes
Grade III
Four and one half furlongs on Firm Turf
$125,000
All horses, 2 years old
Here we are for the very first race of the Breeders Bowl day. The crowd will be slowly filing in from the parties at the posh hotels and from the tailgates. They will be looking forward to the Classic several races from now but this race is not to be overlooked. There is a ton of talent here and some of these colts will be the three year olds that are beating the winners from today’s races. Let’s get the day started off right with an exciting race! Time to take a look:
1 – MINSTREL BAY(GB) ODDS OWNER WIN% JOCKEY WIN% TOP SPEED AVG SPEED RANK 12/1 ManuStable 5.3% D. Sherman 12% 71.3 69.4 43
(HAAFHD (GB) x PROSPECT BAY x THE MINSTREL) One time Stakes winner in his seven races for trainer ManuStable. He has looked better in the shorter races so this may help out some there. He has improved slightly in each of his past four but he will need to make another jump in SPF here to compete in this race.
| 2 – JENNA’S DEPUTY | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9/1 | Dowelly2 | 18.7% | P.Bangs | 24% | 75.8 | 72.3 | 8 |
(FRENCH DEPUTY x REDOUTE’S CHOICE (AUS) x FAIRY KING) If you can win a Graded and a Stakes and even win six of nine and fly under the radar then this cold is doing just that. He has a top ten rating and trainer Dowelly2 wonders what his colt needs to do to get some respect from the bettors and Morning Line. Although consistent, he has not been really impressive lately and will need the magic hands of jockey Bangs holding the reins to get it done here.
| 3 – LAZY DIGGER | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17/1 | AirBiscuit | 6.5% | T.Small | 26% | 74.6 | 70.7 | 92 |
(GOLD LEGEND x INFIRMATIVE ACTION x CRAFTY PROSPECTOR) Sometimes a horse needs to get back to his roots and that is what trainer AirBiscuit is trying to do here with his young colt. He started his career with success at shorter distances and has recently tried to stretch it out some. Both of his wins and his lone Stakes win came at five and a half or shorter so he will welcome this distance. He has Small in the leather and he should help out with that as well as he is certainly one of the best.
| 4 – LIQUID MAGMA(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11/1 | RFrankel | 17.6% | S.Blood | 12% | 78.0 | 72.6 | 77 |
(PERFECT SOUL (IRE) x THUNDER GULCH x EXCLUSIVE NATIVE) This colt with the red hot name took a slight step back last race with a fourth in a Stakes after winning his first three races including the Dentist Bonanza Stakes. Trainer RFrankel has watched the SPFs fall back in each of the previous two races and wonders what he needs to do to motivate this youngster. He has only run short sprints so the distance shouldn’t be a problem for them and he loves to lurk behind the leaders so the post should help as well.
| 5 – FLYING FORTRESS BG | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9/1 | Missouri3 | 15.2% | J.Stivers | 26% | 77.4 | 70.5 | 4 |
(MIESQUE’S SON x MOUNTAIN CAT x SADLER’S WELLS) Since turning to the grass after his first race, this colt has never finished lower than second. He has three Stakes wins and four seconds as well. Trainer Missouri3 loves the effort and heart that this young colt puts into his races. They have Stivers in the irons and this trio makes a formidable team and should be in the mix at the end.
| 6 – RAINBAND | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5/1 | Wulf | 10.7% | T.Loesch | 26% | 82.0 | 71.3 | 19 |
(SPINNING WORLD x RAINBOW QUEST x DIXIELAND BAND) Our Morning Line favorite has two Stakes wins and three efforts with plus 80 SPFs. Both Stakes wins were at five and a half furlongs which seems to be his preferred distance. Trainer Wuld feels that the even shorter distance here will play to the youngsters advantage. They have enlisted Loesch to man the reins and he is something special with these youngsters. All in all, it is easy to see why the Morning Line likes this team.
| 7 – JUDDMONTE FAME | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16/1 | PointBlank | 8.3% | R.Harzheim | 23% | 74.1 | 70.9 | 44 |
(RAINBOW QUEST x GREEN DESERT x RIVERMAN) This colt has always been competive, finishing in the money but will need to improve his speed figures pretty drastically to compete here. He has a Stakes win but it was in a short field and a sub 70 SPF. Trainer PointBlank is going to tell jockey Harzheim that he likes the lead and see what happens.
| 8 – BLOCK OF UNITS | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13/1 | Corza | 4.4% | D.Evans | 26% | N/A | N/A | 4 |
(SELKIRK x CHESTER HOUSE x FORTY NINER) One of two fillies in the race, this young lady is about as consistent speed wise as they come, seemingly never running more than one point faster or slower than a 72 SPF. She has one Stakes win early in the year against the fillies and will have to move that speed figure up significantly to get a win here for trainer Corza. She looks a bit overmatched but has a huge heart and always seems to compete.
| 9 – CREDIT APLICANT(GB) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11/1 | BrentUK2 | 20.0% | S.L.Ledwith | 23% | 72.3 | 70.1 | 41 |
(MILLENARY (GB) x THEATRICAL(IRE) x RAHY) This will be the first time playing with the boys for this big brown filly. Trainer BrentUK2 feels that it is time to see what she can do in mixed company. She has two Stakes wins in her young career and they were the last two that she competed in . She has Ledwith in the saddle and that will give her a better chance but it sure looks like she may be a bit overmatched in this crowd.
| 10 – SLEW ME | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6/1 | Victorious | 21.9% | T.Nugent | 13% | N/A | N/A | 84 |
(CAME HOME x SEATTLE SLEW x THEATRICAL(IRE)) After three consecutive wins, trainer Victorious made the natural step to try and stretch this colt out but he seems to prefer the shorter distances as he ran a couple of competitive races but couldn’t seem to get out front where he likes it and still didn’t have any kick at the end. He should be more comfortable with this distance and could be a thorn in the side of some of the other horses. He may have a tough time getting to the front once again because of the post and early speed in the race and we will see how he reacts.
| 11 – OXYKAL(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9/1 | SnowStorm | 12.1% | B.Sipe | 10% | 63.3 | 63.3 | 26 |
(KALANISI (IRE) x WOODMAN x ALYDEED) This flashy black colt looks like he may be one that actually likes a little extra distance as opposed to most in this race. He won a Graded race at seven and a half and trainer SnowStorm tried him at a mile and an eighth but he finished in the bottom half there. This colt has shown some really promising flashes in his four races and this would be a great time against tough competition to really show what he can do.
| 12 – ALJANDER(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14/1 | BM4 | 7.4% | D.Givens | 25% | 65.3 | 61.7 | 16 |
(NOVERRE (IRE) x ALJABR x DANZIG) After a really impressive streak earlier this year when this NOVERRE colt won three of four including a Graded Stakes and another Stakes race, trainer BM4 entered him in the KY Horsemen Juvy GI at a mile and that really seemed to take something out of him. His past three races have looked totally uninspired and missing that early spark with two straight last place finishes. Taking him back to the shorter races is a good start in getting this talented colt back on track. He has an awesome jockey guiding him, perhaps he can get it together here.
| 13 – SYN CITY | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9/1 | XXXStable | 16.7% | A.Craig | 25% | N/A | N/A | 3 |
(YOU AND I x NATIVE ROYALTY x STRIKE THE ANVIL) Lots of Graded experience in this colt including a GII win. Trainer XXXStable is still trying to find this colts strength after eight races as he doesn’t seem to care whether he is on dirt or grass and has run six different distances in those races. Just like XXXStable, I have a hard time reading this youngster and really have no idea what he will do here. With the help of the thirteen years of experience that jockey Craig has, perhaps his magic hands will help those decisions.
| 14 – PRADO’S BIG FAN(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10/1 | TicketMan0 | 20.0% | F.Gossett | 23% | 71.2 | 64.7 | 7 |
(EL PRADO(IRE) x LEAR FAN x RIVERMAN) Eight races, all but one a Stakes race and this pretty cream colored colt has finished on the board each and every time. Trainer TicketMan0 has a special youngster here and seems to know what he likes as he has run exclusively at six furlongs and shorter. He loves to get to the front and lead the parade and if anything is his undoing in this race that may be it as there is plenty of early speed and he is parked way out in the last post position. Jockey Gossett will help out there by guiding this colt where he needs to be. He could end up in his accustomed spot in the top three once again.
Morning Line = 6-10-2-5-11-13
Yoss Tipsheet = 6-2-14-5
Paz Picks = 6-2-5-14
As mentioned in my preview, there is a ton of talent in this race and nearly as many questions. That is normal with two year olds, even at this stage of the season. It is a fairly even race with some really nice looking colts, most who have never run this short of a distance. I like PRADO’S BIG FAN to finish fourth which is kind of an upset as he has never dropped out of the top three. In another upset, I have FLYING FORTRESS BG in third and he has never been below second in a race. JENNA’S DEPUTY has been a little off form lately but has too much talent to stay down long so I like her to finish second. The young man that is ready to make a statement to the racing world at this important venue is RAINBAND . He looks like one that may be in one of the later races on this day later in his career.
Good luck to all runners!
