Fillies and mares, 4 years old and up
We are here in New York for one of the most prestigious races of the year, the KyHorsemen Mint Julep Distaff: There is a really evenly matched field and some great winners here so it should be exciting. Hopefully no one in the crowd will spill their New York Mint Juleps as they thunder down the stretch! Let’s take a look:
| 1 – COMPENSATION | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6/1 | Lenny12 | 19.3% | N.Painter | 12% | 105.6 | 100.8 | 18 |
(SEEKING THE GOLD x NORTHERN DANCER x SECRETARIAT) This four year old chestnut filly is looking to move into double figures in wins and over $1.5 million in earnings. Both are nice marks and trainer Lenny12 feel that she has a good chance to accomplish both here. He has Painter in the saddle and he is adept at guiding these fillies home. She has been consistent if unspectacular since her Equinics win earlier this year and may be ready for a breakout race to get things started toward the end of the year.
| 2 – OTTO CAPITAL | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16/1 | NoCalBred | 26.2% | Ax.Williams | 11% | 99.3 | 94.5 | 450 |
(EMPIRE MAKER x ELA-MANA-MOU(IRE) x RIVERMAN) This pretty four year old filly moved to the turf earlier this year and picker up four wins. They were all in allowance races and she hasn’t had a triple figure SPF yet but owner NoCalBred has an amazing win percentage and knows how to get them ready. Williams is in the irons and has been performing nicely this year. She likes the lead so the inside post should help.
| 3 – K’S PANACHE | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7/1 | Kuovadis | 27.8% | N.Lawton | 22% | 105.7 | 99.3 | 41 |
(FUSAICHI PEGASUS x MILL REEF x NUREYEV) A nicely bred four year old that knows how to win but seems to start off the years strong and perhaps wear down at the end. She had three wins earlier this year including a GIII but has struggled a bit her last two although she has put up good speed numbers. Trainer Kuovadis has one of the best jockeys in the business holding the reins and that will definitely be an advantage. With Lawson up, any horse is a threat.
| 4 – CATONAHOTTINROOF | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7/1 | JLM | 10.3% | S.Steff | 9% | 103.6 | 101.7 | 66 |
(STORM CAT x GULCH x SEXTON BLAKE(IRE)) If her career is as long as her name, this five year old out of retired mare YOUR PUNCHES could put up some amazing numbers. She has a nice start on that with nine wins although none have been this year. She has been very consistent if unspectacular with top five finishes in Graded races all four times this year. She seems to like the mile and a quarter better though and that could affect her here. Trainer JLM is trying to find her best spot even taking a turn on the dirt this year but is still looking for that first win.
| 5 – WHISPERING SOUND | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8/1 | Given2 | 26.0% | B.Child | 13% | 108.7 | 98.3 | 51 |
(MISWAKI x EL GRAN SENOR x HAIL THE PIRATES) Four year old chestnut filly that has run nicely all year but has frustrated trainer Given2 by not putting forth her best effort in her Graded Stakes races. She seems to like this distance the best though and with Child in the irons could surprise some folks here. Her speeds in her best races will compete hear and the inside half will help her front running style. Given2 hopes for a better effort here.
| 6 – LAKE BEMIDJI | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2/1 | AJR15 | 10.8% | J.Dundey | 8% | 111.5 | 106.3 | 10 |
(MISWAKI x DANZIG x DAMASCUS) The morning line and tipsheet favorite in this race is this nicely bred four year old filly named for the lake in Minnesota. It may be cool in that state but she has been sizzling lately with seven triple digit speed figures in a row topped off by her consecutive 111 SPFs in her last two. This will only be her second mile trek but trainer AJR15 feels it may be her best distance. The only worry is Dundey in the saddle who has been struggling a bit this year but I it shouldn’t matter as this filly looks like she could lug a bag of cement to victory in this race.
| 7 – SLY GO LIGHTLY(IRE) | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8/1 | Oberon | 6.1% | L.Hoskins | 13% | 108.8 | 100.1 | 60 |
(SLIGO BAY (IRE) x PINE BLUFF x BARKERVILLE) It’s been a bumpy ride this year for the chestnut four year old, but after her sterling year in 2005 you know she has the talent. She has 12 wins and over $1 million in earnings but trainer Oberon has to wonder if her best days are behind her. Don’t get me wrong, she is still very competitive but you wonder if she can still carry the Grade I races. This would be a good time for her and jockey Hoskins to show the world she still has what it takes.
| 8 – BINGO’S RANSOM | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8/1 | Punter41 | 17.3% | R.Foster | 8% | 105.4 | 100.2 | 90 |
(COZZENE x RED RANSOM x MR. PROSPECTOR) This pretty cream colored four year old filly out of REDHEAD BINGO is following in the footsteps of her Mom who was a late bloomer when she won her Graded Stakes. It appears that this girl is getting better and better for Punter41 and might be doing her best racing right now. She has hit the century mark in SPF four races in a row and could hit the board in this race. Keep an eye on this girl.
| 9 – LAVISH QUEST | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14/1 | BigGD | 6.9% | CJ Anderson | 9% | 100.8 | 94.2 | 448 |
(ALJABR x GENEROUS(IRE) x VALID APPEAL) Coming back to the grass after a turn on the dirt, this four year old out of GENEROUS APPEAL is also returning to her favorite distance at a mile. Trainer BigGD hopes that the variety will help her here and get her back to a 100 SPF figure. She likes to stalk just behind the leaders so this should be a good spot for her. Hopefully all of this will translate into a nice race and a good finish.
| 10 – GREEK RANSOM | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15/1 | SlewsBack3 | 12.3% | N.Gibson | 4% | 101.3 | 92.8 | 328 |
(RED RANSOM x SWORD DANCE(IRE) x MR. PROSPECTOR) This charcoal colored four year old out of GREECE DANCE has only finished in the top three in one of her eight Graded Stakes races and she will have a tough time beating that here against this field. Trainer SlewsBack3 had to like her 100 SPF effort in her last outing but she ran out of gas at the end so the little bit shorter distance may help here. Gibson is in the saddle but has been struggling this year and that won’t help much either.
| 11 – JOLIE’S SONG | ODDS | OWNER | WIN% | JOCKEY | WIN% | TOP SPEED | AVG SPEED | RANK |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13/1 | Catspaw | 7.8% | P.Davis | 11% | 106.9 | 98.9 | 72 |
(BUDDHA x BELONG TO ME x JOLIE’S HALO) This nice looking grey mare is a five year old with over $2 million in earnings but her last win was 17 races ago at the beginning of last year. She hasn’t finished in the top three of a Graded Race in her past seven and seems to have slipped back to the regular Stakes level where she is still very competitive. I don’t see any reason that she should beat out this field but you never know when a horse with this much talent can pop a big one.
Morning Line = 6-1-3-4
Yoss Tipsheet = 6-4-8-5
Paz Picks = 6-8-3-4
There are some really excellent ladies here and they are really even after the favorite. I don’t think that CATONAHOTTINROOF likes this distance enough to hit the board so I pick her to finish fourth. K’S PANACHE has Lawson up and will have enough to finish third. In a bit of surprise, I like BINGO’S RANSOM to continue that late career surge and finish second. I don’t see anyone really challenging LAKE BEMIDJI . She looks like the class of the field and has been hot as can be. She should win fairly easily.
Good luck to all runners!
