Grade III Capital Spring Sprint

Sweden A diverse field of 10 is set to contest the $125,000 Grade III Capital Spring Sprint here on Saturday. We’ve got co-favorites – one a front-runner and the other a deep closer. We’ve got 2 fillies – both co-second choices in the betting. We’ve got 2 runners who are half-brothers. And the spoiler might just be a former $10k claimer.

PP1      18/1            SCINTILLATING RUBY

4-year-old Summer Squall colt is one of 2 entries for trainer trauma92. He’s the 2nd most successful of 5 offspring of the G-rated mare Ruby Doctor. He’s been pretty successful at the allowance level but that ability has not transferred well to the stakes level. He has one placing in a minor stakes. He did have a surprising 5th in the G1 Sydney Sprint 5 races back. Deserving of longshot status here as he looks to be part of a quick pace with faster horses and good closers.

PP2      9/1              QUITE RIGHT

This 7-year-old horse would be the fulfillment of many sim players’ dreams. Trainer gamehhh plucked the bargain-bred (Rhodes x Razeen) out of a 10k claimer back in week 2503 and proceeded to step him back up to graded company where he had been mildly successful earlier. QUITE RIGHT responded with a couple of 2nds then 3 straight stakes wins, including a G2 and a G3, which happens to be the last running of this event. He hasn’t been able to really match that success since, winning only a minor stakes, and has shown an alarming tendency to fade in the stretch.

PP3      10/1            CRYPTIC RUBY

Trainer trauma2’s 2nd entry in here, 7-year-old son of Cryptoclearance is also the most successful of those 5 offspring of Ruby Doctor. Most of that success has come on the main track with his best effort being a 3rd in a graded stakes. He has won 2 of his 5 starts on the lawn. One of those 2 wins was in a minor stakes. Doesn’t appear to have the speed to stay up with the favorite or hasn’t shown the inclination to close

PP4       6/1             A.P. RIZZ KID

Lordpye2  has not been shy about running this daughter of A.P. Indy (out of a G1 winning “he-mare”) against the boys. In her 4 starts against males on the turf she has finished behind only 1 of them. One of those 3 wins 4 races back in a G3 against a very strong field. She also has a couple of G3 wins against fillies. Closer should get a quick pace to chase and draws 17% jock. The boys better watch out again.

PP5      4/1            TEQUILA WITH LIME

This deep-closing 5-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid starts as co-favorite for breeder/trainer zwylde. He’s having a successful 2006, with 4 wins from 9 starts, all on the turf. 2 of those wins are stakes victories. He has failed to show that big kick in his 3 tries at graded stakes this year, with a 7th place finish being his best of the 3. He did manage a 2nd and a 3rd place finish in G3’s last year, the 3rd place finish coming when the trainer apparently rode his own horse. Would like to see a better jock on the co-favorite. Need to see the kick before wagering on him here.

PP6       6/1       POWER OF PEGASUS II

5-year-old Fusaichi Pegasus mare out of an F-rated Polish Navy mare has won 17 of her 36 races and is better than 50% on the turf. Breeder/trainer crimeboss has only sent her out against the boys once before. She won that one, an allowance restricted to 3-year-olds. She won a G3 2 back against her own sex. She’ll be hard-pressed to duplicate either of those against this stronger field. Wouldn’t be a shock to have an all filly exacta, but doubt she’ll get the win.

PP7       4/1              TETE NOT GALILEO(IRE)

5-year-old son of Galileo(IRE) has been very consistent this year with 3 3rd place finishes and 2 runner-up placings in his 5 races. He has been brought along very carefully by breeder/trainer racelord, having not made his stakes debut until after winning 7 of his first 23 starts. He has tried graded company in his last 9 starts and finished 2nd 5 times and 3rd 3 times. Interestingly, his he-mare “mother” had 19 stakes wins, from a total of 32 wins in 97 races, but could never break through at the graded level. Include in the exotics

PP8       8/1              DON’TPASSTHE BUX G

4-year-old Carson City son is the most talented of 4 foals from a nice little F-rated Forestry mare. Breeder/trainer buxpasser decided to switch him to the turf for this year and he’s responded well, winning 4 of his 10 starts. Scored his first stakes win last time out with a nice closing run in California. The closing tactic will suit here, but the field is much tougher and he gets only a 3% jockey.

PP9      15/1      KILBEGGAN RACES(IRE)

4-year-old Pilsudski(IRE) colt is out of a talented C-rated “he-mare” who had 8 stakes scores and runs for breeder/trainer rkeogh. He’s got 2 stakes wins of his own from his total of 5 wins in 28 races. He’s tried graded company twice without much success and this 129th ranked turf sprinter is in against a tough crowd again here. Draws 14% jock to help so might look to add value to the trifecta.

PP10    4/1        NIGHT’S DESIRE

Breeder/trainer troy5 is probably disappointed in his scratch-bred Night Shift’s son’s last effort, but he has done an excellent job managing the career of this cofavorite. 5-year-old carefully worked his way through allowance conditions, winning 4 of his first 8 starts on the green stuff. Responded well to step up in by winning his first 3 stakes tries, including a G3, and has another minor stakes win since then. Gets top jock and has shown he can handle competition for the lead. Deserving favorite and the one to beat.
