A closer look at The Pasdequoit Special Stakes
A field of ten will be going to post on Saturday for the running of The Pasdequoit Special Stakes. The horses (3 years old and up) will travel the six and a half furlongs over the fast dirt track for their share of the $105,000 purse.
Let’s take a look at some of the contenders and pretenders of the race.
Drawing closest to the rail will be Mr. Frankie(IRE) (8/1). This six year-old out of Swain has won six of twentyseven lifetime starts. Winner of three out of seven races this year, trainer kyladar figures this is the best time to step up against stakes class horses. Versatile horse can either run on the lead or just off it to win. Bugboy D L Jones(7%) gets the call.
To his outside and breaking from post two is the five year-old son of Seeking A Home, Art Home (12/1), trained by justlucky. Highest earner in the field with just about three quarters of a million. Common fixture on a racetrack, he’s been to post fourtythree times winning eight of them. He has won an allowance and a stakes race this year sitting off the pace. C Euler(5%) rides.
Post three is filled with the four year-old son of Aldebaran, Special One(9/1). Special has won six of twentyfive and has finished in the money sixteen times. Comes back after just two weeks of rest stalpipo has entered him in here in hopes of getting a quick pace up front to close in to. May get much needed help from jockey M Staples(21%).
Hydrocarbon(17/1) is the four year-old colt from Lemon Drop Kid. Winner of just one other than, this is a huge step for him. He has not won a race since Nov. ’05, that was also against three year-olds ans over a track rated good. Whoami2 throws him to the wolves here. Hydro’s only hope may be if O Brim(8%) could gun for the lead and stay there.
Running in the color’s of the snowchief stable is Civil Defense(6/1), breaking from post five. Winner of six out of twentyfive lifetime. Stakes winner on both turf and dirt, most recently the Carson Bingo in March of this year. Civil has not hit the board in the past four races. N Bonus(14%) will try to light the fire under him and get this horses late kick into gear.
The public’s third choice Or Not Two Punch(5/1) saddled here by decker, races from the six hole. Six year-old out of Two Punch has been racing with stakes types for a majority of his carrer. Another in here who likes to sit off the pace for one late kick. Goes out for the third time in ’06, won first out and didn’t pick up a hoof last race. Thirteen time winner has no problem finding the winner’s circle. J Bryson(3%) gets the mount.
Dank U Hollandia(6/1) breaks from post seven. oostende ships this handsome son of Broad Brush in from overseas where he last raced just two weeks ago. In that race he just narrowly missed winning by a head. Dank’s ’06 campagin has been with all types of graded and stakes class horses. Seems to like this distance, never finishing lower than fourth. R Simcox(15%) is confirmed to ride.
Brabamoon(IRE) (7/1) is next in line for the brabant stable. Four year-old son of Moon Ballad is still looking for his first stakes win. He seems to need the lead without any pressure to have any hopes of staying on for the win (or a share of the purse for that matter). Finished well up the track LTO over this course. Last race he did finish in front of Sulphur. L Jones(13%) rides.
The public’s second choice Sulphur(IRE) (9/2) is trained by mainline. Twelve time winning son of Giant’s Causeway is yet another who likes to race off the lead. Ranked thirtythrird in the dirt sprints he would love some pace to chase. Batting .500 this year in all sorts of company. Top jock, F Gossett(23%) rides.
The favorite sits on the outside in post ten. Spank the Monkey(4/1) is entered in here for the vegasjef stable. This son of Dynaformer should get the perfect stalking trip on the outside to gun these down. He should enjoy this class as he’s been facing graded stakes competition. Speedy horse should be fit third race off the layoff. J Pimental(9%) is up.
The Bet: 9,3/ 3,9,10 $20.00
