Seven three year old fillies will meet the starter in the Grade II Fence Fryer at seven furlongs over the main track. Here they are from the rail outward.
Smooth Hennessy breaks from the fence for trainer Darkfall. The pretty Hennessy lass from the superbly bred China Belle (Seeking The Gold x A. P. Indy) comes off a third place effort as the odds on favorite in a South African mile stake. But as with virtually all of these ladies, she’s a different animal when sprinting. This one is near perfect in dirt dashes. Four wins and two seconds in six starts. Won two straight stakes prior to her mile loss. Good as any if she fires her best shot.
Grand Causeway(ire) will carry the awesome silks of the Fab Four into battle. The Super Stables’ speedster had a two race win streak aborted in The Grade II Pebbles Flintstone. Grand Causeway(ire), by Giant’s Causeway(ire), is the second stakes winner (Bandicoot) from the A. P. Indy mare, Cooter’s Action. She has yet to hit the board in three graded tries but did finish fourth twice so it’s just a matter if time. This might be the time.
Despite her long odds, Derbyking9 has high hopes for his Razi Prazi. She has been excellent in allowance company in her first five starts and looks to have a bright future. But the daughter of Arazi appears to be a bit overmatched in her first added money outing. Another time. Another place.
Upsetter didn’t take long to live up to her name. The speedy daughter of Golden Missile scored at 13-1 in her second career start. That was the first of three successive victories culminating in her first stakes score. She’s only won once since, the Many Tilt in Tampa to close out her freshman campaign. But she has been right there in graded sprints recently. Two back she was second to Cheyenne Gold in New York and last time out was fourth at her home track in the Pebbles Flintstone. Looks like crafty conditioner Mikehusker has his filly cranked up for a big one this Saturday.
A soon-to-be millionaire, Thnxmsslew has won five of her ten career starts and finished second three times. In fact, her only two off the board efforts have come at a mile or longer. Polandfarm is especially proud of the talented Forty Niner sprinter since they bred, raised and raced her Grade I winning dam, Ms Slew (Seattle Slew x Mr. Prospector). Ms Slew retired a millionaire and now her daughter stands at the precipice of that prestigious accomplishment. Saturday looks like a good day to join Mom. Just remember, if you’re looking to back her at the windows, that she has been idle for eleven weeks so she may need a start.
Favored Smokin Lois reminds me a lot of Thnxmsslew. Lois has never missed the board in dirt sprints, either. Her Mom, Lois Without Echo (Easter Echo x Storm Cat), is a Grade I winner. And her only poor effort came over a distance of ground. The pretty gray daughter of Smoke Glacken is a Graded winner herself by virtue of her score in the Grade II Yanta Snez in California three back. Since then, Molwr’s homebred has posted a third and second in graded sprints. Looks all set for a big effort this week.
Drop dead gorgeous Ravine breaks from the outside stall. The well bred (Gulch x A. P. Indy x Never Bend) sophomore had won two consecutive allowance tests before trying stakes company last time out. She didn’t fire in that Wisconsin start. So on paper, she simply looks a step too slow for these right now. But trainer Turfsurf didn’t win 119 races by misplacing his stock. So give her a second look despite the odds.
